Prabhas (born Venkata Satyanarayana Prabhas Raju Uppalapati) is an Indian film actor known for his works in Telugu cinema.[1] Prabhas is the nephew of veteran Telugu actor Uppalapati Venkata Krishnam Raju.[2] Prabhas made his film debut with the 2002 drama film, Eshwar. His works include Varsham (2004), Chatrapathi (2005), Chakram (2005), Billa (2009), Mr. Perfect (2011), and Mirchi (2013).[3] In 2014 he appeared in the Bollywood film Action Jackson directed by Prabhudeva.[4]
In 2015 he starred in the epic Baahubali: The Beginning (2015), which is the third Global highest grossing Indian film of all time, and the highest grossing Indian film of all time within India.[5][6][7][8][9] The film was screened at the Open Cinema Strand of Busan International Film Festival, Indian Film Festival The Hague,[10] Sitges Film Festival in Spain,[11] Utopiales Film Festival in France,[12] Golden Horse Film Festival in Taipei, Taiwan,[13] Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia,[14] L'Etrange International Film Festival in Paris,[15] Five Flavours Film Festival in Poland[16] and Hawaii International Film Festival in Honolulu.[17]
Early life
Prabhas was born to U. Suryanarayana Raju and Siva Kumari. He is the youngest of three children, with an elder brother Pramod Uppalapati[18] and sister Pragathi. He is the nephew of Telugu actor Krishnam Raju Uppalapati.[19]
Career
Prabhas started his movie career with Eshwar in 2002. In 2003, he was the lead in Raghavendra. In 2004, he appeared in Varsham. He continued his career with Adavi Raamudu and Chakram.
In September 2005 he acted in the film Chatrapathi directed by S. S. Rajamouli, in which he portrays the role of a refugee, exploited by goons. It had a 100-day run in 54 centers.[20] Idlebrain stated that he had a unique style and macho charm in his screen presence.[21]
Later he acted in Pournami, Yogi and Munna, an action-drama film came out in 2007, followed by the action-comedy Bujjigadu in 2008. In 2009 his two films were Billa and Ek Niranjan. Indiaglitz called Billa stylish and visually rich.[22]
