Saving lives[3]

James Shaw Jr. is an American notable for disarming a terrorist armed with an AR-15 style rifle at a Waffle House restaurant in Antioch, Tennessee and saving lives as a result.[3][4] When the shooting started, he ran to the bathroom -- a bullet grazed his elbow and he realized there was no exit -- so when he saw the gunman point the rifle down, perhaps to reload or fix a jam, he lunged and wrestled the weapon away from him.[1] The gunman was captured by police a few days later. While four people died in the attack, it is likely that Shaw's action saved the lives of more restaurant patrons.[1] Afterwards, Shaw established a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the families of the four victims.[1] Total donations raised by Shaw surpassed $200,000 in early May of 2018.[5] While he has been described as a hero by numerous people, including Tennessee authorities, he has said that he does not think of himself in those terms:[1][6]

I was completely doing it just to save myself ... I did save other people ... I figured if I was going to die, he was going to have to work for it.

— James Shaw Jr., April 23, 2018[1]

Shaw was honored by the president of Tennessee State University who praised Shaw for his "bravery and courage" and for saving many lives.[7] He was honored by Tennessee lawmakers who passed a joint resolution honoring Shaw's actions.[8][9] He appeared on national cable TV news shows and was honored at a game featuring the Nashville Predators.[7] He appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres Show where he met NBA basketball star Dwayne Wade.[2] The Steve Harvey Show sent him on a trip to the island of Barbados.[7] In May 2018 Shaw met with Emma González, the Parkland survivor and anti-gun activist who helped to found Never Again MSD; both Shaw and González described each other as heroes.[3] He is a graduate of Tennessee State University.[7] The university is setting up a scholarship fund in his name.[8]
