Introduction

Greenbrier School's main entrance.

Greenbrier Elementary School is a nice caring place. Teachers always greet you with a smile. Every student is helpful, kind, and happy. The kids are hardworking and smart. The school is clean and green. Greenbrier has approximately 340 students from early childhood to 5th grade[1]. Here you will learn about Greenbrier and the history of the school. After you read this you will feel like you have been going there for years.

History

Greenbrier was built in 1964. The architect was Ruck Pate and the construction manager was Turner Construction Company[2]. Greenbrier was remodeled and expanded during the 1995-1996 school year. During this time, the students went to Rand School. The remodeling was completed on October 8th, 1996. Greenbrier celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2004[3].

Through the years Greenbrier has had 5 different principals. Past principals were Mr. Al Swanson, Mr. Jim Hall, Mrs. Rochelle Fingerhut and Mr. Chris Fahnoe[4]. The current principal is Mrs. Shelley Fabrizio. She has been Greenbrier's principal since 2007.

Awards

Greenbrier won an Academic Excellence award from the Illinois State Board of Education for the years 2006 through 2010[5]. Another award Greenbrier has won is called Earth Flag Extension Program Award. Greenbrier got this award for effort that continually demonstrates the principle of reduce, reuse, and recycle. Greenbrier won this award three times: 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002. Greenbrier has also been nominated for the National Blue Ribbon Award, which is a very good thing to get even though it’s not the award itself. Greenbrier was nominated for this award due to academic excellence.

Mottoes

The 2010-2011 Greenbrier motto.

Greenbrier has had a few mottoes in the last few years:

2008-2009: Reach for the stars, anything is possible.

2009-2010: The keys to learning are yours, find the one that unlocks your talent.

2010-2011: Fill a bucket or two and find the best in you.

Those mottoes have made Greenbrier a better place by encouraging students to be respectful to themselves and others. Greenbrier has a different motto every year. The teachers normally come up with the mottoes. Thanks to those mottoes, Greenbrier is now a much better place for learning and being respectful to others. Of course, everyone is friends with everybody! We always say the motto of the year at the beginning of the day on the morning video announcements and after that we say, "Have a great Gator day." Greenbrier has a different motto every year. I wonder what Greenbrier’s motto will be for next year?
