The Graphics Lab is a project to improve the graphical content of the Wikimedia projects. Requests for image improvements can be added to the workshop pages: Illustrations, Photographs and Maps. For questions or suggestions one can use the talk pages: Talk:Graphics Lab, Talk:Illustrations, Talk:Photographs and Talk:Maps.
This specific page is the requests page for the illustration workshop. Anyone can make a request for an illustration to be improved or created for a Wikipedia article. Clicking the "New Request" button will bring you to a standard template for submitting requests, as well as general advice that should be followed.

    Advice to requesters

    All requests:

    • Please make sure your request is "legitimate" by copyright. If the image(s) are in the public domain or freely licensed, you are fine. If the image(s) are "Fair use", there are only certain things we can do with them without falling afoul of Wikipedia's fair-use policies.
      • If you are requesting assistance with a copyright or fair-use image, don't display it on this page; place {{GLNF|Example.png|caption|align=left}} to create a link to it. Do not add the File: extension. Our fair-use policy does not allow displaying fair-use images out of their articles on ANY account.
    • Please check back regularly to see if progress has been made or if any additional questions need to be answered before the request can be completed.
    • If a request is done to your satisfaction, please mark it with {{resolved}}.

    SVG requests:

    • Make sure your request can actually BE vectorized. Note that vector drawings are not suitable for certain applications. We generally use SVG format for icons, logos, drawings, maps, flags, and such. Certain things, photographs especially, are totally impossible to vectorize.
    • Per our non-free content policy, vectorization of copyrighted images is not permitted. If a vectorized non-free image is desired, seek out such an image from the copyright holder.

    Seals of Puerto Rico

    Article(s): Puerto Rico

Request: Please recreate the following seals in SVG. They can be uploaded to the Commons under the same license as the Coat of Arms. The first seal, the Seal of Puerto Rico, takes most of it's elements from the Coat of Arms I have provided. Thanks very much to whoever takes this, I really appreciate it. Fry1989 (talk)

The CoA file goes crazy when opened in Illustrator. You need someone who works with Inkscape to do it. Sorry! -- Orionisttalk 18:27, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Damn. Well, thanks for trying. Is there anybody else who could pleasee do this????? Fry1989 (talk) 18:52, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Belfast, Cardiff and Edinburgh flags

Need SVG illustrations for the following:

Request: Hi all, we have a File:Flag of the City of London.svg, but we don't have illustrations for the other three British capitals (Belfast for Northern Ireland; Cardiff for Wales; and Edinburgh for Scotland). SVG flags of these would be greatly appreciated. Please note, this request has also been made at the less active Wikimedia Commons Illustration Workshop too. 86.159.104.235 (talk) 12:46, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I found the Cardiff and Edinburgh flags at the Flag Institute website (PD) and uploaded them in PNG. -- Orionisttalk 17:42, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Graphist opinion(s):

    Orbital capture animation cleanup

An animation depicting a hypothetical capture of Phobos (small flat-ish round one) and Deimos (small round-ish grey one) by Mars (red). The Sun (yellow) and Jupiter (at itself) are depicted.

    Article(s): Moons of Mars, others?

Request: Unhorrify? The Sun should be fixed, and the orbit artifacts cleaned up. Planets should always be centered on the orbit lines (they wobble around them), and Phobos/Deimos should be labeled P/D for clarity, although if you can think of a language-independent identification scheme, go for it. More frames would be nice, although I know know if it's possible. The exact shape/scales/speed of the orbits aren't important here, so feel free to recreate this from scratch. Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 08:02, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Anyone? Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 20:18, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s): This is an orphaned image (can't blame them - it's one horrible child!) I don't see where in the Moons of Mars article that it would fit in - folks may have more incentive to work on it if it's going to be more readily usable. Jon C (talk) 22:09, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently it was removed immediately after I made the request. But if it's cleaned up, I would definitely bring it back in the article. Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 22:11, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Animation is not quite in my alley - would a sequence of static images with caption suffice? Jon C (talk) 22:24, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    Sure. Anything would beat the current version. Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 22:33, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Take 1. Since this is an entirely hypothetical process, I didn't see the need to introduce names in the image themselves - they can go in an appropriate caption depending on the page. Jon C (talk) 19:40, 23 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    White house room locator diagrams

Article(s): Map Room (White House), Library (White House), and Vermeil Room

Request: The contrast in the first two images for the indicated room is too low. I tried fixing the first one but got a file that was three times as large. Mangoe (talk) 20:39, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s): Can you use File:WHground.svg instead? It could be turned into a locator diagram fairly easily if it's not already sufficient. Makeemlighter (talk) 20:49, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm... It would be better to make a set of these but let me get back to you on that. Mangoe (talk) 22:10, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It would be preferable to have a separate locator diagram for each room given that most such diagrams exist, as it would be hard to get people to stop using them. I would suggest replacing existing diagrams (and adding any that may be missing) by taking the diagram you indicate (and the matching diagrams for the other floors) and blanking out all but the room in question. Mangoe (talk) 18:37, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    SMEAT patch

    SMEAT patch

    thumb

Article(s): Skylab Medical Experiment Altitude Test, Skylab

Request: Hi folks, would someone please be kind enough to vectorise this patch and remove the watermark (the embroidered version of the patch doesn't display it, see here)? Many thanks in advance, Colds7ream (talk) 18:57, 5 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s): This is one graphic that I would recommend against vectorizing. The original is notable in that the Snoopy was drawn by Charles Schultz himself. This has historical merit, is of high enough resolution for screen, and a vector reproduction will not capture the nuances from his hand. Jon C (talk) 18:05, 6 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough; would there be any way to tidy the non-Snoopy parts of the image whilst leaving the illustration intact? Colds7ream (talk) 12:37, 11 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I ended up acting against my own advice and vectorized the whole thing. It's a work in progress, but looks somewhat cleaner than before. Jon C (talk) 19:49, 23 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):Image's request under progression Request taken by Makeemlighter.
Done I've uploaded versions with and without modifiable text. The non-modifiable version renders better, so it should be used in articles. The other version is good for translation and making corrections. If there are any errors or if you'd like anything changed, just let me know. Cheers, Makeemlighter (talk) 23:22, 14 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

<sigh> changed font to Arial, because it scales properly on wikimedia sites. For other watching wikigraphists, this fixes most font scaling problems. gringer (talk) 12:21, 15 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Question: Really? How does that work? Arial isn't even on the supported fonts list... Jon C (talk) 18:19, 15 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's pointless to change the font. It's far better to just create a version with text converted to paths and put that version in the articles. The modifiable version is then listed in other version and is available for translation, corrections, etc. Makeemlighter (talk) 18:58, 15 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Wow! Thank you very much! It looks awesome. SchuminWeb (Talk) 03:06, 16 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Done Since this is used in many articles, and the source is small (192x192px), a vector version would be useful at some point. Jon C (talk) 19:48, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Two diocesan coat of arms

Article(s): Diocese of Truro, Diocese of Lichfield

Request: I am forwarding this request; could an editor please create images of the coat of arms of the above two diocese. The shape of the shield is irrelevant; however, the common shape for English arms lately may be seen here.

An image of the arms of Lichfield's diocese may be found here. The larger cross at centre is a cross potent, the smaller four surrounding it are crosses pattée.

The arms of Truro's diocese are without an image to copy from, bur are described as, "Argent, on a saltire gules, a key, ward upward, in bend, surmounted by a sword, hilt upward, in bend sinister, both or. In base, a fleur de lys sable. The whole within a bordure sable, fifteen bezants. Ensigned with a mitre." In other words, the shield needs to be white with a red saltire, which is an "X" shape, across it. On and within the red saltire there needs to be a key and sword crossed over one another, each yellow in colour. The key needs to be in the backslash position, the sword in the forward slash, and where the two meet in the middle the sword must overlap the key. It is also important the ward of the key is at the top, and the hilt of the sword at the bottom. In the white space at the bottom, there needs to be a black fleur de lys. A mitre rests atop the shield like in the image linked above for the Lichfield.

Is the SVG file any better? gringer (talk) 20:45, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, right. Looks like it's the wrong projection. I'd guess (from this) that the sub-Somalia Africa is included because of the Comoros. gringer (talk) 20:52, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've uploaded a new SVG file that has the orthographic projection preferred by the people who did the PNG file. gringer (talk) 01:17, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No, I'm sorry, I'm just asking for the png to be cropped. Comoros is not part of the Arab world. If you can match the svg with the png with updates, that would be best. The png is the one folks are daily updating as changes occur in the region.--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 06:37, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yeegh! Now you've added Gabon and Albania, which are not part of the protests or the cultural sphere. Can someone just please make the requested edit?--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 16:52, 19 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There's been quite a lot of resistance to changes in the PNG map, so I'm quite wary about making such a significant change to it. I suggest you try to contact a past modifier of that map directly. For example, User:Master&Expert or User:HonorTheKing. gringer (talk) 11:33, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    "Free book cover needed"

    Resolved

Article(s): All books (~0) found in Category:Wikipedia books (books without cover images)

Request: Wikipedia books currently have the "Picture Needed" plus when prompting users for a cover. However, many people just add fair use images, etc... and they have to be reverted, again and again... So I was thinking that designing a new image would go a long way. Something like a book with the "no copyright" sign as its cover, in SVG format. Perhaps with a question mark somewhere in there? Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 07:43, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s): Hi Headbomb - see gallery. Let me know of any changes and improvements you'd like. Jon C (talk) 17:40, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The layout is awesome! Some tweaks: It really shouldn't be named [[File:Wikibooks-something.svg]], since Wikipedia books (collections of Wikipedia articles) are different from Wikibooks (books written from scratch). A better file name would be something like File:Wikipedia-books-missing-cover.svg or similar. Also the blue question mark with a white border has, IMO, a bad contrast with the darkgray book and the aliasing makes the white border looks crappy when the image is small (which is how it would be viewed most of the time). Maybe make the question mark a solid light gray, matching the lighter gray from the inside of the "no copyright" circle?
The original PNG also had a black line instead of a series of black "dots" on the left side of the book. I think that looked better, or at least it's less prone to aliasing. Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 20:16, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Uploaded a modified version under the proposed name - I didn't know that there's a Wikipedia Books. I replaced the black line with a gray one (I think it's easier to see now). I uploaded 2 version - a blue ? with buffed up outline, overwritten by a gray ? as you suggested (which I think looks nicer). If you like the former, simply revert it. Jon C (talk) 22:17, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect! Many thanks. As for books, you can check out this category for a list of them. For example, Book:Louis Armstrong (click "Download PDF" to make the magic happen). Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 22:41, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The "wikipedia books" concept is a little strange to me... I think my concept of a book is one that reads coherently from front-to-back. Hmm... but it would make the "chemistry experiment" illustration effort more worthwhile. Jon C (talk) 19:53, 23 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
