"Given Up"
Song

"Given Up" is the second track from Linkin Park's third studio album Minutes to Midnight.

Given Up, along with What I've Done and No More Sorrow made its live debut on April 28, 2007 in Berlin, Germany. Live performances of these three songs at the AOL sessions were released on AOL on May 5, 2007. The performance of the song is available on the Bleed It Out CD single. They also play in the background on the band's official website.[1]

This is one of the heaviest songs from the album, (along with "No More Sorrow") and is notable for lead singer, Chester Bennington, screaming for approximately 17 consecutive seconds near the end of the track during the heavy metal-styled breakdown, which he has only been able to replicate during live performances eight times, The first time at Stripped Music Sessions, second time at Third Encore Sessions, the third time at AOL sessions, the 4th time at Channel 4 performance and the 5th time during Projekt Revolution in San Antonio. But, in their Australian tour in Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane, Chester once again succeeded to do his 17 second scream. [citation needed]. Also, in live shows in Asia in 2007; Chester has repeated this superhuman feat, like in Singapore.

It has a distinctive jingle sound during the verses and intro, that was revealed on the album DVD to be made by Brad Delson shaking his car keys with Mike Shinoda clapping.

This is the first song on a Linkin Park studio album to contain profanity.

The song is featured on the controversial Uruguayan TV program "Pan y Circo".

In June 2007, the official Billboard website gave information stating that Given Up and Shadow of the Day would be the next two singles from Minutes to Midnight, following What I've Done. However, soon after this, another website stated that Bleed It Out would be the next single instead, which proved to be true. Since then, no offical word has been given as to whether Given Up will be a single or not.

Chart performance

Although the song has not been released as a single, it has already charted on Billboard's Hot 100 and Pop 100 charts, at numbers 99 and 78 respectively.
