"My Old Man" is the 19th episode of the American sitcom Scrubs. It originally aired as Episode 19 of Season 1 on April 9, 2002. It was originally slated to air April 2, but was postponed for one week.

Plot
Turk and Elliot must present a paper they have been working on at a big medical conference. They become upset when they realize that their parents are coming to see it. After J.D. gets a call from his dad explaining they are coming, he finds out his father plans to join in too. Even the janitor's father (R. Lee Ermey) comes in to visit.

Turk's mother has never met or heard of Carla. After introducing herself, she is impressed and they realize that they are a lot alike. However, Carla becomes fearful that she is the exact same person that Turk's mother is. Turk comforts her by telling her that was the reason he fell in love with her; she was a strong and independent woman like his mother. After this, Carla and Turk's mom return to the close relationship they initially had.

Elliot's parents also irritate her. Her father annoys Dr. Kelso by commenting on how sub-par Sacred Heart is compared to his hospital. Kelso gets revenge by planting a seed of doubt in Elliot that should not have become a doctor at all, but just did it to impress her father. Her mother does not help by ignoring her questions and changing the subject to her looks. After a patient pukes on her, she smiles. This lets her realize, she did want to become a doctor, and it was what made her happy.

J.D.'s father (John Ritter) crashes at his apartment. As J.D. explains to Dr. Cox, he is more of a best friend when he really needs a father. He tries to connect with him by inviting him to attend a conference he has to cover, but his father claims he has to meet a friend who is going away. J.D. confronts him at the end of the show and tells him it was really great to see him again. At his heart murmur presentation, he turns his head to see Dr. Cox was behind him listening in.

Trivia
* When the Janitor's father (R. Lee Ermey) makes his son do push-ups, at some point he shouts at him "Sound off like you got a pair!". This is a reference to Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, where Ermey famously played a United States Marine Corps drill instructor who used that line a number of times.

* Early in the episode, Turk's mother says he'd look better in blue scrubs, although green is the color for surgeons at Sacred Heart. In all immediately following scenes, Turk wears blue scrubs, until Carla realizes something disturbing, and he reverts to green.

*This episode is referred to in My Words of Wisdom, where J.D. and the Janitor are talking about the Janitor's father. J.D. states that he has met Janitor's dad, but gets the reply 'You met a man.'

* When J.D is sneaking out of his apartment while his dad is sleeping on the couch you can see a round porcelain sculpture with black and white squares on it to the left. Two of the same sculptures can be seen on Dr. Cox's coffee table in the episode My Fallen Idol.

Quotes
