Location of SP

Singapore Polytechnic (Abbreviation: SP; Chinese: 新加坡理工學院), the first polytechnic established in Singapore, was founded in 1954. The former campus was originally located at Prince Edward Road. In 1978, it was relocated to its present-day location at Dover next to Dover MRT Station.

As of 2008, more than 130,000 students have graduated from Singapore Polytechnic.

Academic schools and departments

Singapore Polytechnic has nine academic schools and three academic departments:

School of Architecture and the Built Environment (ABE)

Prior to 2009, this school went by the name of the School of the Built Environment. The School of Architecture and the Built Environment comprises the divisions of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering.

Department of Educational and Staff Development

The mission of the Educational and Staff Development Department (ESDD) is to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in Singapore Polytechnic.

The department leads educational innovations and initiatives, provides consultancy in the areas of curriculum, teaching, learning and assessment, applies educational research to enhance teaching and learning, promotes e-learning and notebook PC pedagogy, promotes applications of educational technology to teaching and learning, and providing services to support audio/video production and e-learning content creation.

CASS offers a programme that prepares students for careers and further education in fields related to communication, arts and social sciences.

Facilities

• Six foodcourts, two cafes, one restaurant.
• Clubhouses are allocated to clubs officially (under the DSD).
• The alumni clubhouse, Singapore Polytechnic Graduates Guild (SPGG), is next to the campus, and contains a bowling alley, swimming pool, pool room, a gym and a restaurant. All facilities are available for graduates and current students to use.
• Kindergarten within the campus for staff children.
• Two libraries: a main library and the Hilltop Library (a new building to relocate the former BizIT Library).

Moberly is the oldest block. Once a British army barracks, the building has been refurbished into a recreational hub. It contains six pool tables (one on level 1, five on level 2), LAN and console gaming, jamming studios, karaoke rooms, study rooms, a cafe and a museum. It is located close to the basketball courts, Teaching Block 10 and Food court 3.

Awards and Certifications

The Polytechnic has been awarded the Singapore Quality Class as well as the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications. It has also won the Singapore Public Service Award for Organisational Excellence and the People Developer and Family Friendly Awards.

Direct Polytechnic admissions exercise

On January 28 2008, Singapore Polytechnic admitted its first batch of 77 students who became the pioneer batch of DPA students for early education, before the academic year 08/09 began. They attended was the Polytechnic Preparatory Programme (PPP).

The 77 students were separated into four clusters, all from the eight faculties:

• Cluster 1 (C1) - School of Chemical Life Sciences.
• Cluster 2 (C2) - School of Business, School of Digital Media and Technology (for Diploma in Business Information Technology [DBIT] only) and School of Communication, Arts, and Social Sciences (for Diploma in Media and Communication).
• Cluster 3 (C3) - School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
• Cluster 4 (C4) - School of Design, School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, School of Digital Media and Infocomm Technology (for the other courses excluding DBIT), and School of The Built Environment.

Students studied four modules, which are Effective Speaking Skills (ESS), Mathematical Reasoning (MS), Learning-to-Learn (L2L), and also Innovation, Design, Enterprise in Action (IDEAs). Three of them are General Elective Modules (GEMs), which all students in year 1 to year 2 need to take them. When the DPA students completed the modules, they had exemptions to the GEMs they need to take for the next 2 academic years. All modules were light and they contained 2 credit units.

Activities in their free time included Muay Thai, Balloon Sculpting, and Tennis. During 27 - 29 February 2008, the 77 of them went on to a camp at Turi Beach, Batam, for a leadership camp, ahead of their peers who also went to the same place during September 2008. Activities there consisted of Jungle Trekking, White Water Rafting, Low Ropes and cheerleading.

The PPP 2008 ended 28 March 2008, where most of the DPA students were already helping out in their faculties' Freshmen Orientation Camp.

The PPP 2009 started on 2 February where the 2nd batch of DPA students were separated into five clusters. The intake had increased to 104, from the previous 77.

The school will begin its DPA intake for 2010's batch on July 2009.
