The League is an American sitcom, which premiered on FX on October 29, 2009. The series is a semi-improvised comedy about a fantasy football league.[1] A second 13 episode season of The League premiered on September 16, 2010 on FX.[2]

Cast

  • Mark Duplass as Pete Eckhart, the three-time defending champion of the league; recently separated from his wife. Currently single, he has tried meeting women on several occasions. Pete has a small reputation in the league for tricking his friends (such as Andre) into making bad player trades. Out of all the main characters, he is the only one whose occupation is still unconfirmed.
  • Stephen Rannazzisi as Kevin McArthur, a district attorney; league commissioner. Pete's best friend. He has used his influence in the DA's office to garner good trades and draft positions in return for reduced sentences for Ruxin's clients from Ruxin. Since he has difficulty competing in the league on his own, he often takes football knowledge from his wife, Jenny. The guys are convinced that she runs his team. However, Jenny was given her own team, and now does not give football knowledge to Kevin anymore.
  • Nick Kroll as Rodney Ruxin, a defense attorney who has never won a championship and will go to great lengths (including selling out his friends) to do well in the league, but has shown an eagerness to please his wife that surpasses his love for the league. He and Sofia currently have one child named Jeffrey and own a dog named Cale. Despite it being his first name, he hates being referred to as "Rodney" and prefers it when people call him Ruxin.
  • Paul Scheer as Andre Nowzic, a rich plastic surgeon whose naivete makes him the brunt of many jokes. He often uses cliche catch phrases such as "Child Please!", "Try the Veal", and "Homie Don't Play That". He won the League championship at the end of season 1, said to be because of his unfair advantage, having a relationship with Shiva (basis of the name of their trophy and championship game) their class valedictorian during the championship game. Furthermore, he's hosted the last two drafts; last season he hosted at his house and this season in Las Vegas. In the first episode of the second season he renamed the trophy "The Dre" which was then renamed by the rest of the crew as "The SheDre" (A hybrid between the original name "The Shiva" and "The Dre").
  • Jon Lajoie as Taco McArthur, Kevin's younger brother, a perpetually stoned and unemployed musician; Doesn't care or know much about football, but has won the League Championship at least once; Often times hooks up with women easily, and lives via handouts from his brother and "Eskimo family tree" (people who have slept with women he has slept with), making his own food and personal hygiene products, and bartering. He also makes ringtones, which often include noises which come from animals. Taco takes martial arts, owns a naginata (a long pole with a blade at the end) and is studying the arts of naginatajutsu.
  • Katie Aselton as Jenny McArthur, Kevin's wife -- who secretly (not so secretly, as of Season 2) helps him run his team, and has shown an eagerness for the league that is on par with the actual league members. For season 2, Jenny wanted her own team for the league, but she was outvoted to be a player by Ruxin's brother-in-law, Rafi. Later she is introduced into the league to replace Rafi.
  • Jason Mantzoukas as Rafi, Ruxin's brother-in-law, who is brought in to the league for the second season of the series to fill the void left by the departure of an "out-of-town player". Ruxin is coerced to bring in Rafi by his wife Sofia, who is Rafi's sister. Rafi has no knowledge of or interest in Football and alienates the other members of the league with his brashness, crude remarks, and immaturity.
  • Leslie Bibb as Meegan Eckhart, Pete's estranged wife; she hates fantasy football, but wants to start a family with him. One time, she sold Pete's lucky draft shirt to the dry cleaning lady. Pete claims that they have separated, because they fight all the time.
  • Nadine Velazquez as Sofia, Ruxin's wife, who is Christian though Ruxin is Jewish (Ruxin fooled his mother into believing his child's Christening was not a Christening, and that they were actually in a "REALLY progressive synagogue"). She doesn't allow Ruxin to have any visual pornography inside their home, because she considers it cheating.
  • Alina Foley as Ellie McArthur, Kevin & Jenny's young daughter. She loves Mr. McGibblets, a fuzzy toy who sings and dances. Kevin, on the other hand, despises the toy. In the pilot episode, they celebrated her fifth birthday.
  • Janina Gavankar as Shivakamini Somakandarkram ("Shiva"), a high-school friend, now a doctor. The league's championship game and trophy are named after her. Shiva has dated Andre and then broke up with him after finding out about her involvement in the League.
