Martin Phillips (born 30 April 1960 in Dolgellau) is a Welsh darts player who competes in the British Darts Organisation and is currently the captain of Wales.
Darts career
He made his World Championship debut in 1991 losing in the first round to then reigning champion Phil Taylor. In 1992 he defeated the Dutchman Bert Vlaardingerbroek 3-0 in the first round and knocked out England's Eric Bristow 3-2 in the second round to reach the quarter final he was defeated again by Taylor, who went on to clinch his second World title. He also played in 1993 and 1994, reaching the second round in both tournaments, losing both times to Bobby George.
It wasn't until nine years later that Phillips returned to the Lakeside in 2003, losing in the first round to John Walton. He failed to qualify for the World Championship until 2007, again losing in the first round, this time to Scotland's Paul Hanvidge. He went one step further in 2008, beating Shaun Greatbatch in the first round but lost in the second round to reigning champion Martin Adams. Another first round exit followed in the 2009 BDO World Championship, losing 3-1 at the hands of Ross Montgomery.
In the 2010 BDO World Championship, Phillips beat 7th seed Dave Prins 3-0 in the first round, followed by surprise qualifier Paul Carter 4-2 to reach his second quarter-final - 18 years after his first. He then faced second seed Scott Waites and took a highly unexpected 4-0 lead before Waites brought the scores level at 4-4. But Phillips had the better consistency in the final set and reached his first semi-final, where he was defeated 6-4 by Martin Adams having trailed 5-1.
Phillips was also at the receiving end of a nine dart finish achieved by John Walton in the 2007 Winmau World Masters.
Phillips has 108 caps for Wales.[2]
In November 2010, Phillips made his first appearence to the Daily Mirror Grand Slam of Darts, having been qualified after his superb runs to the semi-finals at the Lakeside earlier this year and repeating this feat in the Winmau World Masters in October. Phillips, along with other three Scott Waites, Co Stompe and Adrian Lewis are positioned in group stage E of the tournament. Phillips was first up against Adrian Lewis, who sensationally beat Phil Taylor at the World Grand Prix) in October. Phillips's clinical finishing was too strong for Lewis as he produced some fine displays during the match, including an excellent 101 finish to seal the victory. He beat Lewis by 5-2 in legs.
