Media cross-ownership

Heya SMasters, this is Frankie and I'd like to welcome you and thank you for being our online mentor for this WikiProject.

groups of students in need of mentors

Hey SMasters. One of the classes working with the Wikipedia Ambassador Program, Jonathan Obar's Media and Telecommunication Policy, is working in small groups and would like us to assign a mentor to each group (rather than having students request the mentors they'd like, as other classes are doing).

I invite you to sign on as the mentor for one or more groups, especially if any of the topics catch your interest. To sign up, go to the course page and add yourself as "Mentor: you" in the section for that group. They students and/or professor or campus ambassadors should be cleaning things up soon to list all the usernames for each group and add a few more groups. Once you know who the students are in the group, you can leave them each a quick introduction to let them know you'll be mentoring their group.

Thanks!--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 19:10, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have taken a group, thanks. – SMasters (talk) 07:00, 25 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Check up

Dear Smasters,

I just wanted to check in because I haven't heard anything about the article I've been working on. My article is the National Emissions Standard Act. My teacher advised us to "be bold", so I went ahead and started adding information. I hope everything looks okay; please let me know what you think.

Thank you, Walthakl (talk) 19:50, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks and an idea

Thanks for the barnstar! I noticed you're planning to do WP Wikify in the middle of April. Since that project will probably hold another backlog elimination drive in April, it might be nice to swap your April 18 Wikify interview with your March 28 WikiProject Council interview. That way, the Wikify drive can reap the full benefits of the Signpost coverage like the GOCE drive did last summer. -Mabeenot (talk) 17:41, 25 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The barnstar is long overdue . Yes, good idea. I'll swap it. – SMasters (talk) 00:48, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Manual of Style

Nobody - except Tony - is proposing to eliminate the Manual of Style.

We all have multiple roles here, and comments on WT:MOS are in our capacity as editors, not as proof-readers, deciding not whether we should have a house style, but what it should be. Editors wrote - and rewrite - MOS, after all; there's nobody else to do it.

The question at hand, from my point of view, is "Should Wikipedia's house style ever require something which is not English? which other speakers of English will not recognize, and will stumble over?"

(Some comments would imply that if MOS said that every third letter of Wikipedia should be upside down, we should decide that that was house style and implement it; fortunately the actual claims have been less extreme; and the issue about dashes is not well-founded in MOS at all. )

I should be deeply grateful for an answer to this question, since most people have answered "no" and only Dodger67 and Tony have given any explanation for their "yes". Septentrionalis PMAnderson 19:45, 25 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am obviously a keen observer of all this. I will give my views if and when I feel it is appropriate. Otherwise, I prefer to take a back seat and see what transpires at this stage. Cheers. – SMasters (talk) 14:05, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Wow! Really appreciated your comments on MOS on 05:18, 24 February 2011. It would be nice to turn that into an essay or maybe amend an existing one. Well worth preserving. (Not so sure that a sentence or two might go into the MOS itself BTW). Thanks. Student7 (talk) 14:10, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No problems. I'm not sure if it's deserving of an essay, but it could perhaps be included in the table in the contraction article. – SMasters (talk) 14:16, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

My Interview

Could you please check my interview and give me feedback?
-- Thomas888b (Say Hi) 13:41, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I'll have a look over the next few days. – SMasters (talk) 14:03, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
At first glance, one of the questions we usually ask, is how new members can help the project. This question is to assist the project in recruiting new members, if they can relate to something that they have a particular interest in. You might want to add this as you still have time, but it's up to you. SMasters (talk) 14:22, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've completed a first round of a full copyedit, and also fixed the formatting. You can have a look at the edit summary for some of my points. I usually let Mabeenot write the closing sentence/"coming soon" blurb as he does it so well, so I normally leave it blank – but it's up to you. Let me know if you need anything else. Cheers. – SMasters (talk) 15:40, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Question

What are subpages? Are sandboxes considered subpages? (JoeCool950 (talk) 10:09, 2 March 2011 (UTC))[reply]

Any page with User:xxx/YYY YYY is a subpage. For example, your subpages can be found here. – SMasters (talk) 16:54, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
And yes, user sandboxes are usually subpages. – SMasters (talk) 16:57, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I see how that works then, if all three were left blank, then they would think you'd want them deleted, I'm guessing that's how that works. If you don't have anything to work on in the sandboxes, then you're going to blank the sandboxes, or your own sandboxes. Hopefully, following what I'm talking about. But if your main userpage was blanked also, then they'd think you'd want those deleted, or the administrators would. (JoeCool950 (talk) 06:54, 3 March 2011 (UTC))[reply]
You can request for sub-pages to be deleted, but as far as I know, the primary user page is normally never deleted. It is OK to have it blank, many people do. – SMasters (talk) 06:58, 3 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Good article review

In regards to the Five Finger Death Punch good article review, though Pantera5FDP updated and expanded most of that article (I think), the last edit to the article was on January 15 while their last edit was on February 2: Special:Contributions/Pantera5FDP. I went and fixed (hopefully) some of the minor issues with the Prose. I hope that is ok? HrZ (talk) 14:05, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

OK, will have a look at it in the next few days or so. Cheers. – SMasters (talk) 16:55, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Potential issue with copy editor Ankit Maity

Hey, I just wanted to let you know about this. The editor in question had similar concerns about them raised with regards to the GAN backlog drive here, but dropped out of that one. I don't think they quite understand the goal of the drives, and I wanted a drive coordinator to be aware of it. Thanks. Torchiest talkedits 15:43, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I know about this and wanted to tell Diannaa‎, who is head auditor, but I wasn't sure how without revealing the user. I'll let her know and we'll be vigilant with this. Cheers. – SMasters (talk) 16:38, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have noted this discussion and agree we will have to monitor this user. While looking at the Drive page, I discovered that someone else misunderstood how to do the word count, and have dropped them a line. Thanks, Torchiest, for taking the time to write a note to Ankit and to report it to us.--Diannaa (Talk)

Conflicting dates

Question: When referencing an article, if two or more apparently equally reputable sources differ on the date of a key event, do you cite all of them, or do you make a judgement call? Regards --Peter S Strempel (talk) 04:57, 7 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

We should try to get the date correct. Try to find more sources if you can. If not, either put a {{clarify}} tag next to it, or better still, put in a footnote to explain the situation so that readers are not misled. – SMasters (talk) 05:01, 7 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Book article sfn citation

The Wikimedia help section on {{sfn}} does not appear to offer advice on how to reference a discrete chapter in a book (ie: Gould, Harry. "Foobar", in Harris, Duwayne ed. Making nonsense. London, Foobar Books, 2067, pp. 321-456.). I am concerned to accurately differentiate pages from the same chapter, but also pages from various different chapters by different authors in the same book to cite references for a description of some granularity.

Regards --Peter S Strempel (talk) 08:22, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Using the built-in cite tool, I get:

<ref name=REFNAME group=REFGROUP>{{cite book|last=Gould|first=Harry|title=Making nonsense|year=2067|publisher=Foobar Books|location=London|isbn=123456789|pages=321-456|url=http://example.com}}</ref>

I am assuming that 2067 is the year (typo?). Does this help? Anyway, this is the format that the cite tool uses. – SMasters (talk) 08:38, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It does not address the reference to a chapter in a book. In other words, I'm citing Gould as one of a number of authors who are contributors in a collection/book of contributed chapters edited by yet another person. Your example makes it appear that the citation is to a book by Gould, not a chapter by him in an edited book. I have since experimented using crossover methods from 'encyclopedia' and 'book' examples in citation templates, which nevertheless forces me to use the 'chapter' category to list the title of the chapter, leaving no signifier for the chapter number, and which does not automatically identify the editor name as 'ed' when using the 'editor-first' and 'editor-last' categories. This will give me what I need (see Brezhnev draft bibliography for Hanson) but not what I want. If there is a better way, I would be grateful for a pointer to it. Regards --Peter S Strempel (talk) 10:07, 9 March 2011 (UTC) (20:08 local)[reply]
Sorry, I am not an expert in this, I'm merely a copy editor. I think it's better for you to ask at Template talk:Sfn. The folks there should be able to help you. Cheers. – SMasters (talk) 01:32, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey kind person,

I believe you will be our mentor - for our MSU TC210 class' Wikipedia project. My groups topic is media cross-ownership. I am working on our first 250 word paper, any tips?

Hi SMasters

Hello, SMasters. I'm sorry I haven't been active lately; I'm dealing with something in real life. I'm contacting you because I think it'd be best if I stepped down as a Guild of Copy Editors coordinator. The way things are right now, I won't be on Wikipedia regularly for a long time, so I think it'd be best if you found a new coordinator, one with more time on their hands. The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 22:34, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry to hear that. We will wait for SMasters to respond and decide how to proceed. --Diannaa (Talk) 03:35, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm also very sorry to hear this, but I fully understand. I'll discuss with Diannaa and Tea with toast if we need another coordinator. If Tea with toast can help out with the Membership department, we might not need to appoint anyone else at this stage, but I would like to hear their views. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your work and support for the Guild. Do not stay away too long and you know you are always welcomed at your "home" in Wikipedia. Good luck with all the RL stuff! – SMasters (talk) 03:51, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. Diannaa and Tea with toast, and you guys on IRC? – SMasters (talk) 03:56, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No, I do not use the IRC channels. By the way, I am going to start a newsletter and will post a link once I have something started. --Diannaa (Talk) 20:24, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
here is a link to the initial draft of the newsletter. --Diannaa (Talk) 22:35, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I will go through it. After more thought on this, it might be good to appoint one or even two very active editors to help out. They might also be able to inject fresh ideas to the project. Diannaa, do you see anyone who might fit this profile? – SMasters (talk) 23:52, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have copyedited the newsletter. Do you want me to send them out or do you want to do this? – SMasters (talk) 00:47, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
We could run a by-election. If you would rather appoint, Torchiest has been actively helping out with questions, and Chaosdruid might be interested. You could also call for volunteers on the newsletter. Could you please send out the newsletter? I already have a list of commitments. Thanks. --Diannaa (Talk) 02:47, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No problems, I will send them out. I think that we can just follow MILHIST and co-opt more coordinators. Having a by-election now would interrupt our ongoing drive. I will write to Torchiest and Chaosdruid to see if they are interested. Thanks for your thoughts! – SMasters (talk) 04:14, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps it would be best if I finish this drive, then after the drive I step down and we have a mini-election. Or perhaps we could elect a temporary coordinator, then we could have a mini-drive at the end of this month. Thoughts? The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 21:47, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Cornucopia Award

Btw, what is the Cornucopia Award from WikiProject Food and drink that's mentioned on the Triple Crown page? I can't find it on the project page. If it's just a triple crown related to food/drink articles, then I'll nominate my work on Thomcord, which I already have a Four Award for. – VisionHolder « talk » 01:55, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It is reserved for Wikipedia:WikiProject Food and drink. They need to get a project TC (i.e. a minimum of 5 individual TCs related to F&D) to qualify. – SMasters (talk) 02:01, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The project seems to have enough FAs and GAs to qualify. Maybe you could organize the troops there and put in a nomination. The criteria is the same for the other WikiProject TCs. – SMasters (talk) 02:05, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE / Mid-drive newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors March 2011 backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2011 Backlog elimination drive! Here is your mid-drive newsletter.

Participation
GOCE March 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

So far, 79 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 64 have participated. Interest is high due to a link to our event from the Watchlist page, and many new and first-time copy editors have joined us for the drive. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now. Many thanks to those editors who have been helping out at the Requests page. We have assisted in the promotion of seven articles to Good article status so far this month.

Progress report

We have already achieved our target of reducing the overall backlog by 10%; however, we have more work to do with the 2009 backlog. We have almost eliminated May 2009 and we only have some 700 articles left from 2009. It is excellent progress, so let's concentrate our fire power on the remaining months from 2009. Thank you for participating in the March 2011 drive. We anticipate it will be another big success!

Utahraptor resigns

The UtahraptorTalk to me has decided to step down from his position as project coordinator due to real-life issues.

Co-opting

Hi

Thanks for considering me for co-opting, sorry I didn't reply earlier but I was watching some documentaries and only just noticed the message. I am off for the night, so probably no replies to messages for a few hours, but I cannot see any problems.

Can you give me an indication of roughly how much time and how many times per week would be needed?

Thanks Chaosdruid (talk) 06:09, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, no problems, it wasn't that long . I would say probably an hour or so per week? Maybe less. Unless you decide to become a mentor, but we have few takers at the moment. The most time consuming would be sending out welcome messages to new members (we do have a template for that). We only have a handful joining each week, so I don't think it will take that long. Other housekeeping issues (like helping to archive the Requests page) are quite minor, and quite a few people do it, but you may want to help out if it's not done. You will become one of the main contacts for the Guild, so the rest would be answering people's questions, mainly on our many talk pages. – SMasters (talk) 06:31, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I got your note. I'd be willing to give it a shot, but what exactly would I be doing? You mentioned membership; do you mean just answering questions, or recruiting, or something else? Thanks. Torchiest talkedits 15:32, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for getting back Torchiest. I moved this up here as I invited both of you to this position, so I thought it would be better to keep all this together as you both probably have the same questions. I am referring to the membership dept. of the Guild. I have listed some of the jobs above, but yes, we would also like to have a recruitment plan. Not necessarily to do the actual recruitment, but making the tools available. E.g., preparing an invitation template, recruitment ideas, etc. We would like to encourage more members to become part of the membership committee, and hopefully, they will take an active part in recruiting and welcoming. Our job as coordinators is that - provide guidance and coordination. Any more questions? Do I take both of your answers as affirmative? – SMasters (talk) 15:47, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I'll give it a shot. Torchiest talkedits 16:24, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent! I'll wait for Chaosdruid's reply before making any official announcements. Welcome to the team! – SMasters (talk) 16:28, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Problem in newsletter delivery

Hi SMasters,

There seems to be an issue with the delivery mode of the latest newsletter Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Newsletters/March 2011.

Instead of creating a new section on the talkpage containing the newsletter, as it usually does, it is attaching the template {{Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Newsletters/March 2011}} to the bottom of the previous message—the result is it looks like it has created a new section, but it hasn't really.

I found this out when I went to surround the message with collapseboxes (as I usually do) and found that instead of collapsing the message on my talkpage, it collapsed the template page. See here.

Is there something being done differently that's causing this error?

Cheers, --jjron (talk) 09:15, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Someone forgot to put the closing tag |} at the bottom of the message, so as far as the coding was concerned, the background template continues to whatever is added to the bottom, as it does not know where to end. It should be fixed now. Please don't put collapsible boxes on Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Newsletters/March 2011 as it is transcluded to many pages. Let me know if you still have problems. Thanks! – SMasters (talk) 09:34, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If you are talking about the double header, the header is included in the template this time round, so if you add yet another header, it will show up as two headers. – SMasters (talk) 09:36, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Status of the 4 undated articles

These four articles are still shown in the count as undated articles. Israeli Arts and Kurt Adler do not have copyedit templates. How does this get resolved?--DThomsen8 (talk) 13:32, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I had a look at the Cat. but I don't see any of these articles there. Am I looking at the right place? Which page are these articles listed on? – SMasters (talk) 14:20, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
On Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Backlog elimination drives/March 2011 there is a list on the right with counts for each month. The final entry before the total says there are 4 undated articles. Earlier, other editors listed the four articles on the project talk page. These four articles are an anomaly that should be resolved in the count, and in actual copyediting. Maybe you can find out how the 4 articles were identified. --DThomsen8 (talk) 16:14, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
When I said I went to the Cat., I clicked on the undated articles link, and it took me to Category:Wikipedia articles needing copy edit. But there are no articles there. I suspect that the bot has picked up these from somewhere but cannot detect a date and does not know what to do with them. But these four articles are certainly not listed under that Cat. I'll have to chat with some tech folks to see what the problem is, and this might take a few days. – SMasters (talk) 16:22, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The template documentation admits there may be a problem with the undated numbers, and there has been some queries about it on its talk page, including one regarding the GOCE (still unresolved). I wouldn't worry about it so much. It's probably just a bug. – SMasters (talk) 16:44, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have copy-edited the Àlex Ollé article, so none of these 4 articles is still tagged for copy-editing, and therefore they should not be counted in the remaining articles to be done. --DThomsen8 (talk) 19:31, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Copy editing drive

Thank you for the note. I worked hard to edit two Wikipedia entries, the entries on Charles Barron and Malati Dasi. I am proud to have received barn stars for my efforts. I hope to work on additional entries in the drive but my time is limited because I have a lot do at work. When I get a chance, I will edit another entry or two in the copy editing drive.Iss246 (talk) 14:26, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your efforts! If you don't have much time, you may want to use CatScan (instructions are on the main drive page). Click on ascending or descending to search the articles by size. You can search for very short articles that won't take so long to copy edit, and you will help us reduce the size of the backlog. Some articles are just a few paragraphs. Thanks again and hope you continue to enjoy the drive. – SMasters (talk) 14:32, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Marking articles students are working on

Howdy, Online Ambassador!

This is a quick message to all the ambassadors about marking and tracking which articles students are working on. For the classes working with the ambassador program, please look over any articles being worked on by students (in particular, any ones you are mentoring, but others who don't have mentors as well) and do these things:

  1. Add {{WAP assignment | term = Spring 2011 }} to the articles' talk pages. (The other parameters of the {{WAP assignment}} template are helpful, so please add them as well, but the term = Spring 2011 one is most important.)
  2. If the article is related to United States public policy, make sure the article the WikiProject banner is on the talk page: {{WikiProject United States Public Policy}}
  3. Add Category:Article Feedback Pilot (a hidden category) to the article itself. The second phase of the Article Feedback Tool project has started, and this time we're trying to include all of the articles students are working on. Please test out the Article Feedback Tool, as well. The new version just deployed, so any bug reports or feedback will be appreciated by the tech team working on it.

And of course, don't forget to check in on the students, give them constructive feedback, praise them for positive contributions, award them {{The WikiPen}} if they are doing excellent work, and so on. And if you haven't done so, make sure any students you are mentoring are listed on your mentor profile.
