The Saturdays are a British-Irish girl group, consisting of members Una Healy, Mollie King, Frankie Sandford, Vanessa White and Rochelle Wiseman. Originally formed in 2007, they made their recording debut in 2008 for the record label Fascination Records, a sub-division of Polydor Records. Their debut album, Chasing Lights, was released in October 2008 and peaked at number nine on the UK Albums Chart. Chasing Lights produced four singles which reached the top ten in the United Kingdom.[1] After the release of the album, the band embarked on their first headlining UK tour, The Work Tour.

Wordshaker, the group's second studio album, was released in October 2009 and reached number nine in the United Kingdom. Wordshaker spawned singles "Forever Is Over" and "Ego", which both reached the top ten in the UK Singles Chart.[2] The Saturdays released Headlines!, their first extended play, in August 2010.[3] "Missing You" was released as the EP's first single in October 2009, followed by "Higher" in the proceeding month. Following the release, the band announced an accompanying tour, The Headlines Tour.[4] The group's third album, On Your Radar, will be released in late 2011. The first single titled "Notorious" was released in May 2011. Subsequent singles "All Fired Up" and "My Heart Takes Over" were released in September and November 2011, respectively. The band is currently lined up to star in their own TV show on American cable network E! in 2012.

Career history

2008–09: Chasing Lights and The Work Tour

The Saturdays were signed to Fascination Records, a sub-label of Polydor Records. Their first studio album, Chasing Lights, was recorded during May and June 2008 with input from multiple producers and song writers, including Alex James, Ina Wroldsen and Alex Cartana. The group supported Girls Aloud on their Tangled Up Tour before the release of their first single, "If This Is Love". As well as supporting Girls Aloud, The Saturdays also supported the Jonas Brothers at their Hammersmith Apollo gig.[5] The single was released on 2 July 2008 and peaked at number 8 on the UK Singles Chart.[1] Chasing Lights was released in October 2008 and peaked at number 9 on the UK Albums Chart.[1] The album was certified Platinum by the BBI.[6] Second and third singles, "Up" and "Issues" both charted in the top five in the UK.[1] Their fourth single, a cover of the Depeche Mode song "Just Can't Get Enough" was released as one of the official Comic Relief 2009 singles. The single peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart, making the band the first artist in 14 year for their comic relief single not to chart at number-one.[7] In May 2010, the band teamed up with Manchester United and they will single at a pre-match concert at Old Trafford.[8] The song has also become a cult anthem for Celtic Football Club.[9] The band released a fifth single from Chasing Lights, "Work". The single later peaked at number 22 in the UK and number 21 in Ireland.[1] Their first headlining tour, The Work Tour had twenty-seven dates.[10] McFly's Dougie Poynter, Sandford's boyfriend played bass guitar during "Just Can't Get Enough".[11][12][13] White tripped on some wires back stage and had a foot injury, she remained seated on stage for some shows.[14] In 2008 and 2009, the Saturdays appeared in adverts for several products including a brand of deodorant, tampons,[15] mobile phones, an operating system, and hair removal products.[16] The band was named as models for hair removal product, Veet.[17] The band later became new faces of major campign of Impulse women's deodorant.[18] The Saturdays said that fashion is a huge part of the band, saying people look up to them as their icons.[19] Sandford stated in an interview with Mail Online, "'We aren't models who can't sing. We all sing and we all dance. No one's telling us what to do. We're all different because we're just ourselves - and that's the way it should be."[20]

2009–11: Wordshaker and Headlines!

The group began work on their second studio album in early March 2009, whilst performing on their first headlining tour, The Work Tour.[21] Wordshaker generated generally favorable reviews amongst critics upon its release. Allmusic praised the girls and the album for "combining aggressive basslines and vocals that are a pinch of prowess".[22] The album's lead single, "Forever Is Over" was released on 4 October 2009 and debuted at number-two. The song also debuted on the Irish Singles Charts at number nine. "Forever Is Over" was wrote by James Bourne; ex-Busted member, Louis Biancaniello and Sam Watters, although it was originally written for American Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson.[23] The single was also wanted by American pop rock artist, Pink.[24] The second single to be released from Wordshaker was "Ego". The single charted at number nine on the UK Singles Charts and number ten on the Irish Singles Chart. The band originally intended not to release any material in 2010,[25] but Wiseman explained in an interview with Digital Spy that "[they]'d come across some songs that [they] were really excited about. [...] [so they] wanted to just get everything out [then]."[26]

The band released the mini album/extended play, Headlines![27] on 16 August 2010.[28] Headlines entered at number 3 on the UK album chart. The project's lead single, "Missing You" was released on 8 August 2010.[28] "Missing You" entered the UK Singles Chart at number three.[29] The second single "Higher",[30][31][32] was released on 29 September 2010.[33] It entered the UK singles chart at number 10.[34] Flo Rida recorded a new version of "Higher".[33][35] After Flo Rida beat the group to number one for the second time, the American rapper offered to do a collaboration with the band.[36] The week after "Higher" was released, 8 November 2010 they re-issued Headlines!, including the new Flo Rida version of "Higher" and three other tracks which were on their previous album Wordshaker. Headlines! gained a Gold certification by the British phonographic industry.[6] The Saturdays announced their second national tour in the UK, The Headlines Tour.[37] The Saturdays were given their own reality TV show, by ITV2, The Saturdays: 24/7.[38] The program was produced by RDF Television and had four episodes.[39] The show was to follow the Saturdays every step – from gigs, photo-shoots and TV appearances to driving lessons, surprise birthday sky-dives and hanging out with family and friends.[citation needed] In the first episode of The Saturdays: 24/7 the band were shown gigging around the UK, without King, after she was taken ill after being bitten by a horse-fly.[40] Their autobiography, The Saturdays: Our Story was released on 25 October 2010.[41] The book gives insight into the world of The Saturdays.[42]

2011–present: On Your Radar, All Fired Up Tour, & US record deal

The group announced they were working on their third full-length studio album in late 2010.[43] They worked with a variety of collaborators for the album, including producers Lucas Secon,Labrinth[44] Danish pop band, Alphabeat,[45][46] Taio Cruz,[47] Space Cowboy,[48] Carl Falk,[49] Rami Yacoub,[50] Tracklacers and Steve Mac.[51] Wiseman stated that the record was "different" and "fierce".[52] The first single released from the album was "Notorious". The single was released digitally on May 22, 2011 in the UK.[53] After the release of "Notorious" the band released a clothing line with high street store, Miss Selfridge. The t-shirts feature lyrics from the band's songs "Notorious" and "Higher":'I'm Notorious' and 'Whatcha Doing Saturday Girl?'. The T-shirts were designed and the lyrics chosen by the band themselves.[54] "All Fired Up" was released on September 4, 2011. The group is set to embark on their third concert tour, All Fired Up Tour, in December 2011. On September 28, 2011, the band's third single "My Heart Takes Over" premiered on the Chris Moyles Show, the single being expected to be released on November 13, a week before the album's release. On September 29, 2011, the name of their third album was revealed, titled On Your Radar.[55]

In October 2011, it was reported that the band had reached a contract with the American television network E! for a five-series TV show. [56] Reports also tell that the band is in the finalization of a record deal with an as-of-now undisclosed American record company, presumably a Polydor sister-label. The band is reportedly set to head to America after they finish their All Fired Up tour in the UK in December 2011. [57]

Musical style and influences

The Saturdays have worked with songwriter Ina Wroldsen since they gained a record deal in 2007, with her writing the majority of the bands songs, including "Higher", "Ego" and "Up". Many critics believe that the band's music appeals to the gay community.[58][59] The band's debut single, "If This Is Love," featured elements of Synthpop and New Wave genres.[60][61] After the release of 2010 album, Headlines!; critics noticed that the band had developed "a feisty edge".[62] "Missing You" (2010) is an electropop song incorporating elements of trance and synthpop.[63] The band have made use of auto-tuning on their vocals, most notable on "Missing You" and "Higher"[64] The band have stated they have many influences in their music, including artists such as, Ne-Yo, Jason Derülo and Girls Aloud.[65] Spice Girls, Britney Spears, Adele, John Mayer, Katy Perry and Rihanna.[66]
