Radio Brunel (previously called B1000 and University Radio Brunel) is a student-run university radio station belonging to Brunel University. Shows are broadcast from a ground floor studio at the back of the student union.

History

1970s–2001

It was one of the first student radio stations to go on the air back in the 1970s. Originally broadcast via the radiators in halls bedrooms, moving room to room like a pirate station, they settled in the ground-floor of Chepstow halls in 1979. After flirting with AM and FM broadcast systems, it, like many student stations, ceased broadcasting due to lack of funding.

2006–Present

In 2006 the station was relaunched under the name Radio Brunel. It now functions as an online-only radio station, broadcasting both on and off campus. As of 2010, the current management is working on getting the station played in the student bars (Hub and Locos) during the daytime, as well as working on the increased promotion of the station.

Format

The station features a variety of music and talk shows. Talk and mainstream music programmes generally air during the day, from 10am to 6pm covering news, sports and current affairs, as well as a selection of comedy shows and light entertainment. Specialist music shows are broadcast after 6pm and cover a wide range of genres. During the daytime a playlist is used when there is nobody broadcasting live and presenters are also free to play their own choice of new and old music.

2008-2010

The Bru with Katie Debrah (2008 - 2010)

The show was created by Katie Debrah and focused on campus news, pop-culture and urban music. The Bru was first broadcast on October 2008 and Katie was known for her off the cuff remarks about the celeb world. The show returned for the 2009/10 academic year before ending in 2010. It was the first show to be available to non-brunel students via podcasts. Despite, Radio Brunel only being available on campus; Katie's show gained listeners off-campus by utilising social network sites YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. Katie was also a presenter on Audio Soup during the first academic term of 2009.

Audio Soup

The show was created by Ryan Witton, a completely new voice to the radio, and was joined by the more Baker Drew A Unicorn's Jess Baker. The first show was broadcast on 14 October 2009 and has since then speedily gained popularity with its wide range of music, from rock and indie to RnB and Golden Oldies. The show often includes longer periods of chat than most, with the team finding themselves sucked into amusing topics of discussion, and always ends with a game, such as 'just a minute' or 'top ten' between two of the hosts.

Tall, Short and Cheesy

Forerunner to the current Tall, Short and Ginger, Tall, Short and Cheesy consisting of two of the same presenters (Ben Moxey and Dan O'Toole) but with a third presenter, Michael Cheesman (now replaced by Alex Sergeant). The show had much the same format as its current manifestation, but with the (often misguided) whimsy of Cheesman an element of risk was introduced. The earlier shows were considered 'ropey' by critics, but Tall, Short and Cheesy went on to become the longest serving show in the stations recent history; a tradition continued by the shows successor, which still airs as of the start of 2011.

1993-1994

Dave and Simon's Breakfast Show

Broadcasting Mondays to Fridays, the breakfast show was hosted by Dave Rowlinson and Simon Aulton. Their natural northern humour and experience working in hospital radio made this an award winning and extremely popular show.

Greavesy's New Music Show

Ian Greaves' involvement with B1000 breathed a new lease of life into the radio station. Working alongside Sarah Eaglesfield and establishing contacts with many major and independent record companies during his first year, the station started to receive up to 100 new releases every week. Taking over as Music Manager in 1994, the station was transformed from being one where the presenters just played their favourite old tracks into a cutting edge platform for new music. This popularity aided greatly in obtaining B1000's first Restricted Service Licence later that year. Bands who interviewed for B1000 during this year included Carter USM, Fluffy, Kent, Flightside, D:Ream and Freaks of Desire.

SEx in the mornings

Hosted by Sarah Eaglsefield, B1000's then publicity manager and Flightside frontwoman, SEx in The Morning broadcast on Wednesdays and Fridays after the Academy Nightclub closed. Featuring a free-for-all 'pop into the studio and say hello' mentality, the show had a party atmosphere. It was also home to the Freaky Phone Quiz, based on the Fiendish Phone Quiz, a format first introduced by Nick Meanwell at BRMB in the late 80s.
