Biography
Early life
Reece Mastin was born on 24 November 1994 in Scunthorpe, England to parents Debbie and Darren Mastin.[4][5][6] Mastin has three sisters,[5] one of which, Georgina, auditioned for the fifth series of The X Factor.[7] At the age of seven, he was diagnosed with glue ear syndrome, a condition that is "caused by a chronic build-up of fluid in the middle ear and is the biggest cause of hearing loss in young children".[8] At the age of 11, Mastin and his family moved to Greenwith, South Australia, citing the weather and to seek better opportunities as reasons for the move.[9][10] Mastin taught himself how to sing at a young age, by singing along to his favourite songs on the radio.[11] He began writing songs at the age of 12.[12] Mastin attended Golden Grove High School.[9] He was inspired by his music teacher to pursue his musical interests, which included playing in several bands with friends and performing solo acoustic gigs.[10]
2011: The X Factor Australia
Mastin successfully auditioned for the third series of The X Factor (Australia) in 2011, singing Rooster's "Come Get Some".[9] Before entering The X Factor, Mastin had already recorded an EP.[9] He eventually reached the live shows and was mentored by Guy Sebastian.[5] On 22 November 2011, Mastin was announced as the winner, and received a management contract and a recording contract with Sony Music Australia.[5] His winner's single "Good Night" was released shortly after, via digital download.[5][13] Following his win on the show, Mastin withdrew from his high school and said that he would hire a mentor to help him finish Year 12.[4] However, during an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, Mastin revealed that he dropped out of Year 12 to focus entirely on his music career. "I've reached what I was going to study [...] so there's no point [of] me doing that".[14]
Mastin performed the following songs on The X Factor:[9][15]
