"Why has my article been deleted?" — "Can you help me to improve it?"

These are the two most common questions that have been asked to me so far. If you are a new editor (Welcome!) and you want to improve the chances of seeing an article published and kept in Wikipedia, here follow some useful suggestions for you! They include links to important Wikipedia guidelines that you should read. If you have any further question for me, just leave it at the bottom of this page and, please, click the "New section" button above if you are starting a completely new topic. Cheers!

    1. If you are somewhat connected to the subject/topic discussed in the article, you are strongly discouraged to edit it. This is called conflict of interest and experience shows that it's nearly impossible to have a neutral point-of-view (which is a strict requirement) when writing an article about something that we have an interest to promote. If it applies to you, please see also Advice for editors who may have a conflict of interest.
    2. Before creating an article, check if the subject/topic matches with the very specific Wikipedia definition of "notable". If it doesn't, there is no point in writing an article about it because sooner or later an editor will point out the lack of notability and the article will be deleted. The key aspect here is that the article needs to give evidence of "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject".
    3. Sometimes, brand new articles are quickly deleted because they are so short that they don't give enough evidence of the notability of the topic, yet. If you need more time to write an article, you can create it as a draft under your user space and then move it to the "main space" only when you think that it provides evidence of notability.
    4. Writing for an encyclopedia can be a bit complex and Wikipedia provides Articles for creation, a section curated by experienced editors who would help you to create an article compatible with Wikipedia guidelines. See also their Article wizard.
    5. Articles should be written from scratch. You can use pieces of other Wikipedia articles, if you want, but you can't copy any content from other websites or other kind of sources (even if that content was created by you) unless it meets the criteria for acceptable contributions explained in Wikipedia:Copyrights.

    Notice

Hello LowLevel73 (talk · contribs)! I want to let you know that the appropriate deletion tag for the article, Chandan Majumder you recently tag for deletion is {{db-person}} because the article actually have contents, only that there is no assertion of significance or importance. Thanks! Wikicology (talk) 12:22, 29 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Wikicology: Hello! Thanks for the heads up. Actually, the creator of the article added the contents about 50 minutes after I requested the speedy deletion. Thanks for updating the deletion tag! LowLevel73(talk) 12:34, 29 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

First thing when I was creating the article it says I need to reference links as from where i got the information. Also there is lot more to write and make people knowledgeable about it. Speedy deletion nomination of Ivelt Yiddish Forum

    Hi

I just created this page because another page in Wikipedia was directing to it, I have no interest to promote this forum, I don't even know ho are the administrators, I'm just here to help people with information they might have interest in, if you believe the article should be written more formal, you are welcome to edit it or insert a tag requesting other users to edit, I don't know why deletion is in place here. Vinkel (talk) 03:32, 30 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi I see the page is deleted already, any explanation for trowing away my work? Vinkel (talk) 03:32, 30 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Vinkel! I'm absolutely sure about your good faith and that you created the article simply to contribute to the project, your efforts are appreciated! Said that, the article was unfortunately compatible with the G11 criteria for speedy deletion, which is related to articles that (even unwillingly) promote a subject and that "need to be fundamentally rewritten to become encyclopedic".
As a suggestion for the future, very short articles like these, that make quite strong claims like "Ivelt is very important for..." or "non of them meets the size of information found on Ivelt" without any reference that backs up them, are usually considered mainly promotional in their nature. While statements like these would not cause a more detailed article to be speedy deleted, very short articles with bold claims and no references are instead usually deleted.
The solution for the future is simple, though: just be sure that the article does not meet any of the Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion and, as always, the more bold is a claim, the more references it needs. Again, thanks for your efforts, I understand very well how it can be frustrating to see a contribution deleted. I hope that this clarification can help you. If you need any further information, feel free to ask me. Best regards! LowLevel73(talk) 04:39, 30 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks LowLevel73 and I really appriciate your effort to explain to me why it was deleted, I will go ahead and try to rewrite the article in a way it should be encyclopedic. I hope it will help people this time. Vinkel (talk) 17:31, 30 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Olamic Days

    LowLevel73,

It is for philological reasons why I would want this article to produced/displayed. It is worthwhile because of it's meaning for evolution, intelligent design, and any religion with a creation mandate. Also what a great term for research such as into evolution or things which take long periods of time as infinity is not a good word to use.

With great peace, Logna. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Logna (talkcontribs) 05:02, 30 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Genie Networks

    Hi LowLevel73,
I didn't realize my page will be vote for deletion that quickly...
Although most people don't recognize the company, but it's quite famous within the Network/ ISPs industry for only two companies in the world can provide them network traffic flow analysis and management- Arbor Networks and Genie Networks. As I saw Arbor Networks already has a page, I thought creating Genie Networks was just natural.
what do you think I can improve with the contents to withdraw your nomination?

Best Regards, Nicole — Preceding unsigned comment added by Foxeyes0514 (talkcontribs) 08:11, 30 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Foxeyes0514! If the subject is actually well known in their industry and if their importance can be backed up by independent, notable and reliable sources, then you should add references to the article. This is an article that could help you: Help:Referencing for beginners. You can contest the speedy deletion clicking the "Contest this speedy deletion" button and stating that you need a bit more time to provide the references and to make clear in the article why the company is notable. Also, if you are connected to the company in any way, then you should read what to do about the Conflict of interest. I hope that it helps. LowLevel73(talk) 08:28, 30 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    Hi LowLevel73,

    Deletion of butN Limited page

Hi LowLevel73 please instruct as how to modify article so as to not make it look promotional. I have been searching on startups / established companies which are competing LinkedIN's supremacy.Adsyvb (talk) 11:46, 30 October 2014 (UTC)Adsyvb[reply]

@Adsyvb: Hello Adsyvb! I've read your talk page and it seems that other editors have given to you very good suggestions to avoid any further issue with the article that you are writing. I will add my voice to those editors who suggested to you to seek help at Articles for creation. Writing an article for an encyclopedia is quite different than writing other kind of articles and I'm sure that the people at "Articles for creation" could help you a lot. Once you'll get a better vision of what Wikipedia can accept, I'm sure that you'll be able to improve the article and to make it compatible with the guidelines. Thanks for your contribution, if you have any other doubt about how to proceed, I'll be glad to answer to your questions. Happy editing! LowLevel73(talk) 01:05, 31 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Software Engineering Associates, Inc.

Thanks for the note. I thought that being the "World Leader in JOVIAL Language Support" made them significant, since JOVIAL is still used by a lot of avionics and they don't have a lot of competition in the field. I will try to add more. Peter Flass (talk) 17:14, 30 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I tried to expand this point by describing the types of applications JOVIAL is used for, rather than just assuming the reader would see it. Peter Flass (talk) 19:31, 31 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This page should not be speedily deleted because... it was originally deleted due to vandalism and attacks by a group of people via tumblr lying saying that he wrote it himself. I wanted to put it back up, as the original page (before it was deleted) has been there for many years without an issue until it was attacked by these young people who lied and had it deleted without cause. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Insignope (talkcontribs) 04:25, 2 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis deletion

This page should not have been deleted because... The page referenced - http://www.psduua.org/heritage/bring/part2/2_mn_minneapolis1.html is from us as well. This is our denominational page. I work for First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis and both the wikipedia page and the psduua.org page come from our organization as our history. I'd be happy to reference the other page. Who are you?

Hello. Do you work for the Vatican? Libreria Editrice Vaticana? Do you have some kind of legal rights over the official Catechism of the Catholic Church? A Cardinal perhaps? In the ideological line of Cardinal Kasper perhaps? Please let me know. I have very limited time as I am in Afghanistan right now, but will take a couple minutes here and there to check the internet.

Speedy deletion for Enriched Text Content

Hi there, I was wondering if you could please elaborate on what parts of this page you found to be promotional rather than "encyclopedic" so that I could make the necessary changes. Given its brevity and that all information included is referenced, I'm unsure where the promotional material is located. Thanks 9933Wally (talk) 19:09, 3 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello 9933Wally! Thanks for contributing to the encyclopedia. The phrases of the article that were copied-and-pasted from some of the sources that you have proposed as references create unfortunately two problems: 1) Copying verbatim those phrases, even if they are relatively short, is a copyright issue for Wikipedia and 2) Using texts taken from sources that promote a subject, usually produce an article with a promotional tone. I would like to help you to increase the chances of seeing your article published in Wikipedia, here follow my suggestions, which include links to the pages of Wikipedia guidelines that you should read:
    • If you are somewhat connected to the subject/topic discussed in the article, you should not edit it. This is called conflict of interest and experience shows that it's nearly impossible to write a neutral text about something that we have an interest to promote. Please see also Advice for editors who may have a conflict of interest
    • Before creating an article, check if the subject/topic is notable. If it isn't, then the article will be sooner or later deleted.
    • Writing for an encyclopedia can be a bit complex and Wikipedia provides Articles for creation, a section curated by experienced editors who would help you to create an article compatible with Wikipedia guidelines. See also their Article wizard.
    • Articles should be written by scratch. In any case, don't copy any content from other websites, unless those contents meet the criteria for acceptable contributions explained at Wikipedia:Copyrights.

    I hope that it helps. Happy editing! LowLevel73(talk) 20:22, 3 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    NewLeaf Chocolates Deletion

    Hello LowLevel73!

I was not sure if I had responded in the correct fashion. Hopefully my talk page submission reached you. I belive the company is worth mentioning because it is the first of it's kind to create a new eco-friendly shipping and packing "peanut". The other information I found to be pertinent to the cause since it referred to their environmental charity. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cbsohe12 (talkcontribs) 03:38, 4 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Cbsohe12 and thanks for contributing to the encyclopedia!
An administrator has reviewed the nomination of the article for a "speedy deletion" and the text of you opposition. It has been decided to delete the article. When you opposed the deletion, you explained why the subject of the article was, in your opinion, notable. In Wikipedia "notability" is defined by these guidelines: WP:N and the articles are evaluated according to them, not according the subjective opinions of the editors. I invite you to read these guidelines and to check whether "NewLeaf Chocolates" can be considered notable according to them.
Also, a few paragraphs above in this page, you'll find a section named "Speedy deletion for Enriched Text Content" in which I wrote a list of four points/suggestion that I think could be useful to you as well. I'm sure that they will help you to improve your future contributions to the encyclopedia so that they will be compatible with Wikipedia guidelines. Let me know if you need any further assistance, I'll be glad to help. Cheers! LowLevel73(talk) 05:00, 4 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Comment by Douglasschorr

Hello LowLevel73 ... no issue. Putting in a page for my one and only book was over enthusiasm on the part of my son (13) and I ... we started the afternoon wanting to declare me as an Atheist/Humanist on your Wikipedia List of Atheist page. Indeed I may be the only EX-Rhodie on it! Thanks for the welcome. I will work my way in slowly! Douglas Schorr — Preceding unsigned comment added by Douglasschorr (talkcontribs) 07:32, 4 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Douglasschorr, welcome again to Wikipedia! I'm glad to see that you want to contribute to the encyclopedia. As you have already seen, other editors have published on your talk page a box with some important links to the main Wikipedia guidelines. I'm sure that their content will greatly help you to understand how to contribute. After reading those guidelines, if you have questions about how to start editing, you can ask them at the Teahouse, where experienced editors will give you excellent guidance and suggestions. Speedy deletion of abillity

Hi LowLevel73, following your recommendation for speedy deletion of the abillity page I tried to contest the decision using the link provided but heard nothing back.

I'd like to have a conversation about it as I thought the content was accurate, relevant and factual and I certainly did not intend for it to sound promotional in any way. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Voxcomm (talkcontribs) 11:16, 4 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Voxcomm, thanks for contributing to Wikipedia! The article has been perceived quite focused on highlighting the positive aspects of the product and its features. As a result, the overall tone was similar to a typical promotional "brochure" that listed the good features of a product. This perception was enforced also by specific expressions like "...over X per hour/mile/second", which are typically used in contexts where the goal is to promote something. As you imagine, this is far from the encyclopedic tone that a Wikipedia article aims to reach. The suggestion that I can give to you is the same that I provide to any editor who wants to write an article about a product or a company/organization/group:
    • If you are somewhat connected to the subject/topic discussed in the article, you are strongly discouraged to edit it. This is called conflict of interest and experience shows that it's nearly impossible to write a neutral-tone article about something that we have an interest to promote. If it applies to you, please see also Advice for editors who may have a conflict of interest
    • Before creating an article, check if the subject/topic is what Wikipedia defines as "notable". If it isn't, there is no point in writing an article about it because sooner or later an editor will point out the lack of notability and the article will be deleted. The key aspect here is that the article needs to give evidence of "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject".
LowLevel73(talk) 20:16, 4 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
