Revision as of 12:51, 29 August 2006

NOTE: To those wondering what is going on - the AID and the COTW have been merged to create one large drive that overhauls all classes of articles. The voting rules remain the same as for AID.

The Article Creation and Improvement Drive is a weekly collaboration to improve all articles to featured article status.

/History - For past winners.
/Removed - For removed nominations.
/Maintenance - ARCAID upkeep.

Introduction

To vote or nominate you have to be a registered user with at least one contribution that is not a vote. Any and all articles may be nominated except:

If you wish to help with maintenance of Article Improvement Drive (updating vote counts and such), please see this page: /Maintenance.

User AID unfolds to

This user participated in the Article Creation and Improvement Drive.

How to nominate

Here is the template for nominations:

ARTICLE (1 vote, stays until DATE ONE WEEK LATER)
:Nominated MONTH DAY, YEAR; needs at least 4 votes by DATE ONE WEEK LATER, YEAR

; Support:
# (sign with four tildes)

; Comments:
* (put your reason for nomination, sign again)

----
 1. Copy and paste the template to the bottom of the list of nominations on this page and fill it out. It is important to use UTC time; the current time and date now is 12:26, Monday, September 30, 2024 (UTC).
 2. Under "comments" section put explanation of what work is needed.
 3. After submitting the new nomination, go to the nominated article and put AIDnomto do on the top of the article's talk page.

How to vote

Sign with "# ~~~~" on the end of the list of the article you want to vote for and then update the vote count in the subhead. Opposing votes are not counted; see approval voting. You can vote for as many articles as you like. If, after you vote, the vote count equals the "needs at least xx votes by", then add 4 to "needs at least xx votes" and add a week to date in vote count and "needs at least xx votes by" notice.

Example. You encounter this situation and decide to vote:

History of the world (23 votes, stays until February 7, 2006)
:Nominated December 8, 2005; needs at least 24 votes by February 7, 2006

First you put "# ~~~~" on the end of the list of people who voted for that article and then change the vote count and date in following manner:

History of the world (24 votes, stays until February 14, 2006)
:Nominated December 8, 2005; needs at least 28 votes by February 14, 2006

How the article is selected

Article with most votes on each Sunday in 00:00 GMT is selected as "The current Article Improvement Drive article". If two articles have same number of votes, the older nominee wins.

The next project article is to be selected on Sunday, September 3, 2006. 00:00 GMT (Template:DAYSTOSUNDAY)

How an article is removed from the list

Articles need four votes per week to stay on the list. If current date (September 30 2024) exceeds "stays until" date of particular article, that article entry is removed from this page and moved to page for removed nominations.

Nominations

Martin Luther King, Jr. (30 votes, stays until September 7)

Nominated July 16, 2006; needs at least 32 votes by September 7, 2006

 • This is a good article so far; however, it needs more attention. It could use more sources, copyediting, and a general cleanup.
 • Yes. It's past time that we make this a Featured Article; amazing that this one would receive so little attention while Rosa Parks has already been an FA for months. -Silence 22:43, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

 • Volcano is a featured article in two languages. They are also the key element of the geography of the Pacific Northwest, Japan, Hawaii, Sicily, and the Yellowstone region. This is also a very basic article that any encyclopedia should cover well.
 • Nice idea for a collaboration. It could use more in-line citations. :-) — RJH (talk) 17:29, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
 • Volcanoes are important features of the entire Pacific Rim and several other parts of the world. Durova 05:25, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

 • One of the main phases of matter, one of the most important concepts in chemistry, and yet there's no sections to speak of, and only one source. • This is a very important subfield of biology yet all we have is a stub. While the Evolution page has endless debates over whether creationism should be included, debates that go nowhere but consume many many hours of time by several editors (some quite capable), here is an important scientific topic practically abandoned. Lexor suggested merging it with another article - I have no objection and leave this decision to biologists. But whether merged or kept, I think this is th perfect example of a scientific topic that deserves attention and care to help make this a great encyclopedia.

In fact, if anyone actually knows an embryologist, please encourage them to contribute!

 • This is a huge topic that gets a lot of media coverage in Australia, the US, the UK and probably other countries. And our article is barely more than an ugly little stub. A massive amount could be written on the topic, with studies, media controversy, facts, figures etc etc. Stevage 09:21, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

 • Article is in terrible shape for such a crucial article, muddled, full of one-line sections, "does not represent a worldwide view" to a massive extent. Considering the number of hits this article must get, it should at least make sense. Lots of content there, but lots of formatting and aesthetic work to be done, as well as NPOVing. Jdcooper 16:49, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
 • The article is in near-constant edit wars and has tons of long-standing arguments on the talk page. Much as I would like to see this article improved, I don't think it's a good candidate for this project. Kafziel 17:28, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

 • I have written most of this article and referenced it, but the man is so damn prolific I can't actually keep up with him. Damn his being an amazing and attractive actor and phenomenal polymath! But yeah, Alan's got so many projects coming out (4 films and 2 plays this year alone, not to mention his activism, his endless town-hopping, oh, and Cumming:the Fragrance...) and he's done so much I find I can't actually write it all by myself (though if you go through the history, I've given it a good try). Please can people give me a hand with this. Alan is a good man and this is a good article, it just needs a bit more info to be GA at least. Dev920 23:28, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

 • This is a subject very near and dear to my heart. coffee's peer, tea, is already a featured article. Now that the FA nomination of the previous object of my obsession, caffeine, seems to be coming to a successful conclusion, this article seems like a logical followup. The current status of the article is only barely acceptable in its current form, so it needs quite a bit of work to reach FAS.
 • How could anyone not vote for coffee? I've had so much coffee today, I may have to vote several more times. ;)

 • As good a nominee as ever. Originally a COTW nom that failed, but developed into an article due to a group of editors (including yours truly) who saw its potential and vast scope. Unfortunately, all we could find were outdated sources and thus the article remains in a permanent sort of limbo. Would love to see someone (or someones) make it the featured article it could be. juppiter talk #c 08:32, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

 • October 23, 2006 will mark the 50th anniversary of this momentous uprising when Hungarian citizens bravely dared to expel the Soviet military. It was one of the bravest episodes of the 20th century. It would be an appropriate featured article for 23 Oct 06, but needs lots of outside help first. People close to the subject matter are often still too passionately invested in the event to objectively evaluate different points of view, thus the page has seen more than its share of argument, revisionism (its arguably the most embarrassing of subjects to diehard communists), and rancour. The wider wiki community could do it some good and put this article up as featured on its 50th anniversary. Istvan 04:31, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
