*You cant know many people from the bottom of Billinge (Chapel End) if you dont know anybody's kids who were born in Whiston (I can think of 3 off the top of my head). Granted, why they were I dont know given that for them Billinge was literally up the road. Quite a few people I know from all sorts of places in St Helens like, Windle, Blackbrook, Parr even Moss Bank were all born in Whiston. Surely it was only a small portion of St Helens Borough (Billinge, Garswood and prob Haydock) that were born in Billinge. Why would someone from the middle of St Helens go to Billinge, when Whiston was closer?. The difference between the two is that the vast majority of Wigan Borough was born at Billinge, the vast majority of St Helens Borough were not. Thats nothing to do with being 'small town minded', thats fact. Man2

Just getting in touch. There are ways of getting a point of view across and ways of discussing things and even ways of disagreeing in a civilised manner (I know these things as I have been an administrator in the past on other forums) but this guys attitude stinks. I am now stooping to the same level of childish name calling with the guy and this is not me.

Unfortunately there are not many other Wigan editors out there at this moment in time. So you may not have anyone else contacting you.

Welcome

Welcome!

Hello, Man2, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Again, welcome!

Hi! The above message is automated, but I also have a few personal points I'd like to mention!... I've noticed your edits to a number of articles related to the Wigan area. I have to say I'm very much impressed by your work - particularly with regards to the county status and the type of contributions you are making. I'm not sure of your level of experience in editting, but if you ever feel the need to chat or would like support, do please get in touch.
If you take an interest in editting towards excellence, a (strict) policy on county status (which you are very much adhering to) is found here. If you would like to edit these Wigan based articles towards a high standard, good quality example articles about settlements include Sheffield, Bath and for the Greater Manchester area - Shaw and Crompton. You could use these examples to take ideas from for article content.
Hope that helps your experience of editting somewhat. I do apologise if you are an experienced editor. However, do keep up the great work and do feel free to contact me if you would like any assistance! Jhamez84 00:44, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Edit summaries

Another point would be to bring your attention to Edit Summaries.

When editing an article, there is a small field labeled "Summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

Edit summary text box

It is highly recommended that one fills in the edit summary field with a breif but clear and comprehensive summary of your actions, as it makes it easier for you and your fellow contributors to understand what has changed, and is helpful when going through the history of the page. Anyway, on that note, I shall leave you to contribute! Good luck. Jhamez84 15:41, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Metropolitan Boroughs etc

Hi Man2,

I noticed that you have been adding Metropolitan Borough of X, County X to all the Wigan area articles. This isn't necessary on absolutely everything (eg. Higher End. The whole point of wikilinks is to allow people to find out more information if they want to. Also on this article the history section already has this in there. There really is no need to have it twice. Regan123 00:57, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Recent edits

Man2, I'm sorry but your edits continue to look like you are making a point about Wigan. The whole point of wikilinks is that people can look at other articles for more information. If we didn't do it this way, we might as well just have one giant article for the whole world. You have now effectively reverted all my edits to Winstanley and only provided one edit summary. You have also put Wigan back into the list, when it is not an adjacent area, which is precisely what these are supposed to list, not everything that could possibly be close to an area. You are making it hard to assume good faith. I should also ask you to look at WP:3RR. If you breach this you can be blocked by an administrator. I will not revert these tonight because all that is happening on anything to do with Wigan is an edit war. Regan123 03:31, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for the contact. The answer to your question ..... 'How could it have been the principle maternity facility for the St Helens area? .... is this ... Billinge Maternity Hospital was used by practising GPs in most of the St.Helens areas. The areas referred to are : Rainford, Windle, Eccleston, Carr Mill, Parr, Blackbrook, Haydock, Earlestown, Newton-le-Willows. That is 'north west St.Helens'. It was also used by practices in : Golborne, Lowton, Leigh, etc. etc. etc. Also Wigan.

The answer to your question .... 'people from places in the Metropolitan Borough of St Helens, other than Billinge Chapel End and probably Rainford (i.e. areas within about 3 or 4 miles of Billinge Hospital) whould have used Whiston Hospital seeing as its closer than Billinge wouldnt they? ... is this ... No, they would use Billinge Hospital. Because that is where their GP would refer them, because 'until it closed in 2004, Billinge Maternity Hospital was the 'principle maternity hospital for 'THE SURROUNDING AREA, and that includes St.Helens as well as Wigan, Leigh, Standish, Rainford and Skelmersdale. Whiston only kicked in after the 2004 event, as did Wigan Infirmary. 80.192.242.187 00:22, 18 December 2006 (UTC) JemmyH.[reply]

  • No it didnt, St Helens people have been born at Whiston Hospital for years. Before Billinge shut they would have gone to Whsiton not Billinge. Man2
  • Why won't you be told? I'm a Haydock person, so are my three sons, my nephews and nieces too. All born in Billinge hospital when it was open. I know no-one whose kids were born in Whiston. I wouldn't argue against people from 'the other side' of St.Helens going to Whiston, but hey, St. Helens borough is a large place too, you know. Here's some info. for you ... before Billinge Maternity Unit opened, patients from the St.Helens area used a hospital called 'Cowley Hill', it was near the town centre. When Billinge opened, Cowley Hill closed and the patients all 'generally' went to Billinge to have their babies. Nowadays, they'll 'generally' go to Whiston if they're 'in' St.Helens, but my mates girl, from St.Helens but living in Haydock, has just had her baby in Warrington Maternity Unit. You see, the NHS are not 'small town minded', to them a Maternity Unit is a Maternity Unit and they couldn't give a toss whether Wiganers 'think' it's 'theirs' or St.Helensers 'think' it's 'theirs' either.
