Garuda Linux is a free and open-source Linux distribution based on the Arch Linux operating system. Garuda Linux major focus on appealing UI and user-friendliness. It features a rolling release update model and uses Pacman as its package manager. Garuda originates from Hinduism which is defined as divine eagle-like sun bird and the king of birds.


Desktop Environment

Garuda Linux KDE comes in three variants; Dragonized, Dragonized Gaming and Dragonized BlackArch.

Garuda Linux GNOME features Garuda Linux's own customized dark theme and light theme of GNOME.

Garuda Linux Xfce, which features Garuda Linux's own dark theme and light theme of Xfce.

Garuda Linux LXQt-kwin, which features Garuda Linux's own dark theme and light theme of LXQt-kwin.

Garuda Linux Wayfire, which features Garuda Linux's own dark theme and light theme of Wayfire.

Garuda Linux Qtile, which features Garuda Linux's own dark theme and light theme of Qtile.

Garuda Linux i3wm, which features Garuda Linux's own dark theme and light theme of i3wm.

Garuda Linux Sway, which features Garuda Linux's own dark theme and light theme of Sway.

Garuda Linux also includes "advanced user" variants of KDE and GNOME. It's meant for users who do not want extra software and functionalities. It has minimum packages that allow the Operating System to run simplistic functionalities. They do not provide any support for Barebone edition, as the user has the liberty to control their Linux distribution.

System Requirements

Garuda Linux hardware requirements vary on the Desktop Environment used, but are very similar.

  • Minimum requirements:
    • 30 GB storage
    • 4 GB RAM
  • Recommended requirements:
    • 40 GB storage
    • 8GB RAM

Garuda Linux also requires a thumbdrive that contains 4GB space for their standard versions. Gaming Desktop Environments require a thumbdrive with 8GB storage space available.

Features

Garuda Linux uses a graphical installer called Calamares. The rolling release model means that the user does not need to upgrade/reinstall the whole system to keep it all up-to-date inline with the latest release. Package management is handled by Pacman via the command line (terminal), and front-end GUI package manager tools like the pre-installed Pamac. It can be configured as either a stable system (default) or bleeding edge in line with Arch. Garuda Linux's includes colorized UI which comes in various options, if none of the UI themes satisfies the user further customization is allowed to the users preference.

Garuda Linux was released during April 2020.

The development team of Garuda Linux come from various regions across the Earth. Some provide their legal names otherwise provided nicknames.

  • Librewish (Shrinivas Kumbhar): Lead Founder of Garuda Linux. A full time student interested in the study of technology. From Kolhapur, Maharashtra, India.
  • SGS: Founder of Garuda Linux. Loves to artistically underscore the work of the great developer team. His Hobby is creating logos and avatars.
  • tbg: A longtime Linux user from the west coast of Canada.
  • dr460nf1r3 (Nico): A Linux enthusiast from Germany who mainly maintains the Server and the "dr460nized" Edition.
  • Yorper: An IT professional, living in Australia, Linux user and enthusiast since the late 90s. Maintains the Xfce edition of Garuda Linux.
  • Naman Garg: Young web developer from Kaithal, Haryana, India who maintains the website.
  • Rohit: A FOSS enthusiast likes to experiment with Linux desktops and maintain the Qtile version.
  • TNE: Developer from Austria with exceptional C and Javascript skills. Maintains servers and Garuda tools.
