In the first week of February 2022, a Hijab protest in Indian state of Karnataka erupted when Muslim students wearing hijab in a college were denied entry to classes. Later on 5 February 2022 the Karnataka government issued an order banning the wearing of hijab in colleges. Two petitions have also been filed in the High Court after Muslim girls were barred from wearing hijab in some colleges in Karnataka.[1]

On 8 February 2022, in the Indian state of Karnataka, the controversy over the wearing of hijab by Muslim students intensified, after which the state government announced the closure of high schools and colleges for the next three days.[2][3]

Background

In late December 2021 and early January 2022, there has been a dispute between the students and the administration regarding the hijab in many colleges in the state, but in early February 2022, the controversy has intensified.[4]

Hearing in the High Court

Several female students from Udupi's Government PU College for Women had petitioned that wearing the hijab was their constitutional right.[5]

Reactions

  • Malala Yousafzai – In her tweet, Malala said that it is terrible to prevent girls wearing hijab from entering school. She said that there were still objections against women in the matter of dressing more or less and demanded that Indian leaders should stop the process of separating Muslim women from the mainstream.[6]
