Cyclone Tiffany was a strong cyclone that made landfall in Queensland and the Northern Territory. The fifth low and fifth tropical cyclone of the 2021–22 Australian region cyclone season, Tiffany originated from a tropical low south of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

Damage from Tiffany totaled at least 50,000 Australian dollars, ($36,000 USD) and 1 fatality was reported. Six other fatalities were reported due to Tiffany's precursor in Papua, Indonesia.

Meteorological history

On January 4, the Bureau of Meteorology began to monitor an area that could become a tropical low near the Coral Sea.[1] As the disturbance organized itself, the BoM continued to monitor it, and upgraded it to Tropical Low 10U on January 8, and began issuing advisories.[2][3] Within a few hours after issuing the first advisory, the BoM named the low Tropical Cyclone Tiffany as it began to rapidly consolidate itself.[4] After consolidating itself, Tiffany went on rapid intensification for 12 hours on January 9, and the storm's windspeeds jumped from 65 kmph to 120 kmph. The next day, at the same intensity, Tiffany made landfall in Northern Queensland.[5] Due to Tiffany moving inland, the storm weakened into a tropical low as it moved over the Gulf of Carpentaria. As the low entered the Gulf of Carpentaria, it strengthened, despite the amounts of wind shear.[6] According to the JTWC, Tiffany's secondary peak had winds of 100 kmph in one minute mean.[7] Early on January 11, Tiffany made a second landfall in North Australia, and began to rapidly weaken, and the JTWC stopped issuing advisories on the storm.[8] Tiffany continued moving southwest for 6 days before dissipating due to land interaction.[9]

Preparations and impact

Papua New Guinea

No direct impacts on Papua New Guinea were reported, though 50-100mm of rainfall fell in the southern half of the country.[10]

Indonesia

The precursor to Tiffany caused heavy rain and major flooding to Jayapura, resulting in 6 fatalities, despite the city being located on the northern coast. 500 were evacuated in preparations for the storm.[11]

Australia

One house in Katherine, Northern Territory saw over A$50,000 in damage due to Tiffany, and a car was destroyed by flying branches.[12] One person died in Queensland after floodwaters struck them, and another person is currently missing.[5][13] Tiffany also hit many areas still recovering from swells caused by Cyclone Seth.[14] In Top End, no major damage was reported, though fallen power lines and flooded roads were reported.[15] In Mataranka, Northern Territory, many trees were downed and flying debris and sticks were reported, causing minor damage to some houses.[16] Katherine saw over 100 millimeters of rain in just 24 hours.[12] Broome, Western Australia was battered by strong rain, winds, and hail, and many trees were uprooted. Damaging winds also struck Northern Kimberley.[17] Damage in the Cape York Peninsula was minimal, though many people were urged to hide in shelters or basements.[18] Many people across Queensland, most in Cooktown, were urged to hide or evacuate. A levee failed, and floodwaters rushed into towns.[19] Over 200mm of rain was dumped in many areas of Queensland within a 24 hour period.[20] In Groote Eylandt, many areas saw power outages, though damage was generally minimal.[15]
