Wikipedia:WikiProject Visual arts
- This wikiproject is still underdevelopment. Expand it further as needed.
WikiProject Visual arts provides a place for editors of related pages to discuss and organize common issues. Like any page on Wikipedia, all are welcome to edit and contribute to this project.
Rather than try to force information to appear in a uniform way, this WikiProject aims to present what information is available in the best way possible. The project provides a place to discuss various ways to accomplish this. These recommendations on the Visual arts project are based on various Wikipedia style guides and common practices in articles. Use your own judgement in applying these guidelines and all Wikipedia guidelines to composer articles and be bold.
Some Wikipedians have formed a project to better organize information in articles related to Visual arts. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. If you would like to help, please inquire on the talk page and see the todo list there.
Title
WikiProject on Visual arts
Scope
This WikiProject aims primarily to establish a Community-driven WikiPedia standard HOWTO article. As members of the Open source community we understand how important HOWTO Articles are to new users of open source software.
How to help
How you can help depends on your time, resources and interest. Here are a variety of ideas for contributions ranging from simple to complex:
- Check for factual errors on visual arts pages.
- Check for spelling errors on visual arts pages.
- Check categorization of existing articles and help organize.
- List needed pages on Wikipedia:Requested articles/Culture and fine arts
- Create new pages as requested.
- Create and edit pages about artists. See also Wikipedia:Manual of Style (biographies) and Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography for guidlines.
- Upload and add images to all visual arts pages. If any pages need images, it's visual arts.
- Add links to websites where more art can be viewed. Particularly with articles for which art is not public domain, thus uploading images to Wikipedia would be a copyright violation.
- Update Wikipedia:Wikiportal/Art. The portal can hopefully be updated daily if not more often than that.
- Expand art stubs and artist stubs into full articles.
- Check references on visual arts pages.
- List questions, article requests and others on the talk page.
- Inform members who have displayed interest in the subject of the project via their talk page or the talk page of project pages.

Art Manual of Style
Develop an Art Manual of Style. Address issues like...
- Capitalization of art movements and art style name.
- A style guide at zeal.com suggests using a dictionary to determine capitalization. However, dictionaries vary on art movement/style capitalization. (See User:Sparkit/capitalization.) The Wikipedia Manual of Style does not touch on art movements and styles in particular, but implies that wikipedia style is to use lower case. Bringing us back again to using a dictionary. Thus, the final questions are; Which dictionary? What to do when dictionaries do not agree with one another?
- http://www.collegeart.org/caa/publications/AB/ABStyleGuide.html College Art Association style guide for Art Bulletin says,
- In general, sharply delimited period titles are capitalized, whereas large periods and terms applicable to several periods are not: e.g., Archaic, Baroque, Early and High Renaissance, Early Christian, Gothic, Greek Classicism of the fifth century (otherwise, classicism), Imperial, Impressionism, Islamic, Mannerist, Middle Ages, Neoclassicism for the late-eighteenth-century movement (otherwise, neoclassicism), Post-Impressionism, Pre-Columbian, Rococo, Roman, Romanesque, Romantic period, Xth Dynasty, antique, antiquity, classicism (see above), medieval, modern, neoclassicism (see above), postmodern, prehistoric, quattrocento.
- How to add an image of art.
- What to include on the image page.
- What to include and how to format an art image's caption. (http://www.collegeart.org/caa/publications/AB/ABStyleGuide.html has guidelines.)
- Copyright concerns.
- Information resources.

Goals
- To provide a place to discuss common issues on visual arts related pages.
- To thoroughly explore the visual arts globally and historically.
- To ensure all pages meet the standards of Wikipedia:Cite sources. Non-referenced articles seem unprofessional and below the standard of even a high school research paper! See also WikiProject Fact and Reference Check.
- To manage editing of the Art Wikiportal
- To discuss and categorize project pages.
