Trivia

  • A scratch and sniff card was made specifically for this episode. Various scents were on the card, and when told during the episode, you were supposed to smell the various odors that were on the card. The cards were distributed in TV Guide magazines. The numbers were cut out in the re-airing of the episode on 9-13-07 but are on the Season 2 DVD.
  • The shot of Earl (see episode picture above) with his hands up in the rain is a takeoff of a scene from the movie The Shawshank Redemption.
  • This episode parodied the movie Rudy. Rudy starred Sean Astin, Charles S. Dutton and Chelcie Ross who were all guest stars in the episode. Two of the most memorable scenes of the film were parodied during this episode (The inspirational speech given by Dutton, and the players giving up their position on the team for Rudy)
  • The video tape Joy recorded her message over apparently had an episode of Yes Dear on it, as the end of the tape a clip from the show is visible. In fact, it was from the pilot of Yes, Dear, and was the end of the doctored tape (Where Sammy was walking on water.) Billy Gardell who appeared on this episode had a recurring role on Yes Dear.
  • Show creator Greg Garcia got the scratch and sniff idea from John Waters who had appeared on the show earlier in the season. Waters' film "Polyester" featured a similar concept.
