The Artist

Juan Andrés Rodríguez better known by his artistic name El Monje was born in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba,in November of 1930. He died in the same province in 1995 He cultivated mostly the painting and drawing. He did his firts art studies at the Centro Vocacional de Artes Plásticas, Sancti Spiritus, Cuba. Since 1969 he is member of the Unión de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba (UNEAC)

Individual Exhibitions

In 1971 he showed his works at the Spanish-Cuban frienship Society, Havana, Cuba. His paintings has been showed in many occasions , among them is in 1990 the exhibition named Güijes de El Monje , Martí Library, Santa Clara, Villa Clara, Cuba.

Collective Exhibitions

The art piecs of this artist has been included in several collectives exhibitions such as the Salón Nacional de Artes Plásticas showed in 1969 in the International Art Center, Havana, Cuba. In 1976 he was included in the Salón Pintores Villareños, an exhibition that tooked place in Cienfuegos, Cuba. and in the same year he was part of An Exhibition of Eleven Cuban Primitive Artists at The Institute of Jamaica, Kingston. One of his most recent shows was in 1996 Tradición y modernidad en el arte espirituano, displayed in Galería de Arte Universal, Santiago de Cuba, Cuba.*

Awards

During 1987, 88 and 89 he obtained a Prize in Drawing at the VI Salón Oscar Fernández Morera, Centro Provincial de Artes Plásticas y Diseño, Sancti Spiritus, Cuba.
