The Komatsu 930E is an Ultra Class off-highway hauler built by Komatsu.
It was the first Ultra Class off-highway hauler built beginning in 1995 at a rated payload capacity of 320-330 short tons. All of the Komatsu electric drive haulers are made at the former WABCO hauler plant located in Peoria, Illinois.[1][2]
The Komatsu 930E is notable for being one of the largest models of trucks ever manufactured.[1][3]
It is a hybrid vehicle whose wheels are driven by alternating current electric motors, like the slightly larger Liebherr T 282B. Older technology large trucks, like the Caterpillar 797B have their diesel motors connected to their driving wheels through a traditional mechanical transmission and drive train.[citation needed]
On May 27, 2008, Komatsu announced a even bigger off-highway hauler called the 960E.[citation needed] This new hauler is 3,500/3,346hp powered by a SSDA18V170 diesel engine.Fully loaded the 960E weighs 1,270,000lbs.[citation needed]
As of 2004 Komatsu had manufactured 300 model 930E trucks.[4]
Komatsu also manufactures the Komatsu 830E, using similar technology, but with a bucket capacity of only 231,000 kilograms.[citation needed]
