Other neat portal ideas for longer term

  • Longer term ideas to think about from other portals:
  1. Events section, like: "On this day" e.g., Biography, Religion, United States; "Selected anniversaries" e.g., War; "Calendar" at Holidays. Interesting idea of "Month selected anniversaries", at Oregon.
  2. Model intro with some rotating images, after Portal:Oregon, Portal:Indiana, Portal:Iceland/Intro and Portal:Philosophy of science/Intro.
  3. Revamp DYK sections w/ free-use images, model after Portal:Criminal justice and Portal:Oregon.
  4. Portal palettes at User:RichardF/Palettes/Portals. Comparable color schemes can be developed from the various hue lists at User:RichardF/Palettes. Also see Portal:Box-header.
  5. If there are a lot of categories, then categories section to 2 columns, like in Portal:Indiana.
Also take some time to check out style/formatting at Portal:Indiana Cirt (talk)

Dispatch

Cirt, Awadewit suggested that you might be interested in writing a Signpost Dispatch article on Featured portals (the only area of featured content we haven't covered). Sample previous articles are at {{FCDW}}. We've covered:

None of them start out looking like that: if an editor initially just chunks in some text, many others chip in to tweak it up to Signpost standards. For example, someone wrote this, which Karanacs, Royalbroil and I turned into this, so if you just chunk in some text as a start, others can help finish it off. Another example, I put in this outline, and Karanacs brought it up to this. Other editors have written almost complete and clean Dispatches without much need for other editing. If you're interested, please weigh in and coordinate at WT:FCDW In case you're interested, you could just begin sandboxing something at WP:FCDW/Portals and pop over to WT:FCDW to leave a note when you're ready for others to help out. Will mull this over and most likely draft something up. Cirt (talk) 11:54, 18 November 2108 (UTC)[reply]

Vettaikaran

So, you mean I can start the article called Vettaikaran after the released of Villu, Vijay`s newest movie.

- Thulasi12345 (talk) 03:22, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry, what is this in reference to? Cirt (talk) 07:23, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your excellent article

Hello and Happy 2009! I was doing New Page Patrol and I came upon your article Tadodaho -- what an amazing article! Thank you so much for bringing it here, as I truly enjoyed reading it. Keep up the excellent work in the new year! Ecoleetage (talk) 13:38, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanksomuch. Cirt (talk) 13:39, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It seems like they decided to take anything related to portals off the main page, see Wikipedia:2008 main page redesign proposal. I, for one, would like to see at least one link (the main portal link) to be kept. Since you are well into the portal business, I would like to see your views on this matter. OhanaUnitedTalk page 14:38, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There're so many ideas flying in and out of that page that even my watchlist failed to detect that someone took it off. OhanaUnitedTalk page 14:48, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Vettaikaran

Look here ! You`re the one who delete the article called Vettaikaran . So, I`m asking you whether I can restart the article after Vijay`s Villu released.

DYK for Leaving Springfield

Updated DYK query On 4 January, 2009, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Leaving Springfield, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Google books

Hi Cirt
I'm curious about this change. You mentioned WP:COPYLINKS in your edit summary, but I'd be very surprised if Google Books were violating the copyright of Penguin Books or the author with their scan. Why do you think so?
Cheers, Amalthea 13:22, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your kind inquiry. I suppose you are correct, and technically regarding the WP:COPYLINKS policy that I had cited in my edit summary the link might actually be okay, but it isn't necessarily best practice to link to an incomplete version of the text (I see that [2] links to a limited preview). Cirt (talk) 18:11, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I see. If you say that it isn't best practise, is it mentioned in the MoS somewhere? I thought that it's a very good idea, if we have the opportunity to link to an online version of a book, in particular with a sensitive topic like this. I think it only enhances the reference if it can easily be verified, and it doesn't matter for that whether it's a complete version of the book or not. --Amalthea 18:51, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I have thought this over and I have reconsidered my opinion on this, and I self reverted. I think it may be a good idea to have a wider community discussion on this issue in general at some point. Cirt (talk) 18:59, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Addendum: One of the most crucial things is if the article cites pages not accessible in the preview – if it does, the link is misleading. Cirt (talk) 19:02, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, and I agree of course, a link would be misleading if the link target did't contain the fact that is quoted. Cheers, Amalthea 19:09, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Just a quick note: the article's on hold pending a plot summary fix. Thnaks, Sceptre (talk) 10:15, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ah thank you, I will look into addressing this soon. Cirt (talk) 13:37, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dropa

Hi Cirt -

Just a bit curious because I was reading this article very recently. Why was it deleted?
