Predictions

Astronomical predictions for the 22nd century

List of the long total solar eclipses

  • June 3, 2114 : Solar eclipse[1] of 6 min 32 s, saros 139.
  • June 13, 2132 : Solar eclipse[2] of 6 min 55 s, saros 139.
  • June 25, 2150 : Solar eclipse[3] of 7 min 14 s, du saros 139.
Exceeding 7 minutes of totality, this will be the first time this has happened in 177 years; the last one occurred on June 30, 1973[4] when the Concorde prototype followed the totality spot during 73 minutes.
But eclipse fans of this epoch will not have to wait nearly so long for it to happen again.
  • July 5, 2168 : Solar eclipse[5] of 7 min 26 s, saros 139.
  • July 16, 2186 : Solar eclipse[6] of 7 min 29 s (very close to the theoretical maximum), saros 139, "crowing" this serie.
This is predicted to be the longest eclipse during the 10,000 year period from 4000 BC to AD 6000 (eclipse predictions by Fred Espenak, NASA/GSFC.DEPP)[7].

Science Predictions

Much of what happens in the 22nd century will depend on mankind's ability to manage and control the Earth's resources in the preceding 21st century. The resulting changes to the planet's environment will play a major role in determining what kinds of societies will develop.

Based on the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report of 2007, it seems likely that sea levels will have risen somewhat between 18 and 59 cm (7 and 23 in).

At the same time, the formidable progress of science and technology may radically enhance our ability to influence world events. Based on Moore's Law, for example, new forms of artificial intelligence may arise that could actually surpass human intellect. Computer graphics in the 22nd century may become so advanced that they are indistinguishable from reality. Entire virtual worlds could be created, at speeds vastly greater than real time—allowing simulations to be run in much quicker timeframes and with far more detail than we are currently used to. The continued growth of the internet, and the enormous resources available online, may dramatically improve the understanding and cooperation between nations, as well as providing radically new techniques for education, work and training.

Other areas of science likely to see enormous progress in the 22nd century include nanotechnology, space travel, genetic engineering, quantum mechanics, robotics, materials engineering and military hardware. Much of our power generation may come from fusion.

Space telescopes may become powerful and sophisticated enough to observe and map extrasolar planets in detail.[by whom?]

By 2200, it is predicted that a Type I civilization will form under the Kardashev scale, according to Nikolai Kardashev's extrapolation of 1% energy usage growth per year.[8][verification needed]

According to the UN Population Bureau, life expectancy in 2200 will be around 100 for developed countries and the world population will be about 8.5 billion. However, the UN has warned that these projections could be invalidated by any change and progress in future medical and scientific technology and discoveries, as well as changes in future birthrates.[9]

Other Predictions

  • March 17, 2160 - Unless changes are made as to when Easter can be observed, this particular March 17 will fall within Holy Week for the first time since 2008 and fall on the same day (Monday) as it did in that year, likely requiring the movement of the Feast of Saint Patrick's Day to another date.[10]

Science fiction set in the 22nd century

Literature (novels, short stories, comics)

Television and film

  • The first Alien film takes place in 2122 according to the Alien Universe Timeline. The sequels Aliens and Alien 3 both take place in 2179.
  • Bicentennial Man, about half the events of this movie take place here.
  • In Doctor Who characters have used time-travel to visit various points in the 22nd century.
  • The events of BraveStarr take place in the 22nd century on the planet New Texas.
  • The events of CLAMP's Chobits take place in the 22nd century.
  • The events of Captain Power occur in the year 2147.
  • The events of the Captain Video begin in the year 2149.
  • The events of the anmie "Martian Successor Nadesico" occur in the year 2195.
  • Daleks - Invasion Earth 2150 AD, a film adaptation of the second Doctor Who TV story to feature the Daleks.
  • Gundam Seed, an alternate-universe version of Mobile Suit Gundam (the Cosmic Era calendar begins about 10 years after the predicted oil crash of the mid-21st century, placing the beginning of the CE calendar sometime between 2040 and 2090, the series would therefore take place sometime between 2111 and 2161).
  • DT Eightron, an anime set on the year 2187.
  • Phil of the Future, a Disney Channel series. (The Diffys, the main characters, are from this era (2121) before they crash in 2004; theme song refers to Phil as a "22nd Century man").
  • Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century, an animated television series with Sherlock Holmes in a science fiction setting.
  • Space Battleship Yamato was launched on October 9, 2199 on its desperate mission to save the earth in the Anime series of the same name.
  • Wonderful Days, a South Korean animated science fiction film, takes place in the year 2142.
  • Hyperdrive, a British sitcom features the adventures of the crew of the HMS Camden Lock as they pursue Britain's interests in 2151.
  • Star Trek: Enterprise (2151–2161). The first starship capable of reaching Warp 5 is launched from Earth, leading to unprecedented exploration of space, including first contacts with the Klingons, Andorians, and Romulans. According to this series, an area of Earth stretching from Florida to Venezuela will be devastated by an alien attack in 2153, resulting in the death of 7 million people. Enterprise is decommissioned in 2161, just prior to the establishment of the United Federation of Planets.
  • According to Star Trek, the Earth-Romulan War will be fought between 2156 and 2160, which results in the establishment of the United Federation of Planets and Starfleet on October 11, 2161. Star Trek also predicts human colonization of Mars by 2103.
  • The Matrix, a science fiction cult movie, in which the protagonist Neo discovers that all what he believed was a reality is in fact computer simulation. Morpheus, another character of the movie, identifies the events of the movie as being set in the years around 2199. However, it should be noted that it was mentioned in the film Matrix Reloaded that the movie took place in the 6th incarnation of The Matrix. By Morpheus's estimation, then, of there being an approximate 200 year difference between the era in the Matrix and the era of the real world, with the knowledge that Neo's time is actually the 6th incarnation of the Matrix (and an estimated 200 years or so for each incarnation), that could potentially mean the year in the real world is closer to the year 3399. However, since the first and second Matrix sequels failed, it could be safe to assume they did not last 200 years each. Thus, the current year of the real world could be anywhere between approximately 2199 and 3399. Presumably, only the Machines would know for certain.
  • In Babylon 5, the Foundationism religion was started in the year 2157 and Psi Corps was founded on April 12, 2161.
  • The animated television series Exosquad is apparently set in the late 2110s.
  • In the TV series Time Warp Trio, Joe, Sam, and Fred meet Jodie, Samantha, and Freddi on September 17, 2105. (Jodie, Freddi, and Samantha are Joe, Fred and Sam's great-granddaughters.)
  • The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fight future crime in the year 2105 in the animated series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fast Forward.
  • In A.I., a science fiction film that is based on a short story entitled "Super-Toys Last All Summer Long" by Brian Aldiss, the story begins sometime in the 22nd century when androids with very high levels of artificial intelligence (called mechas, short for "mechanisms," i.e. synthetic life) have become commonplace.
  • ghosts on mars was set on mars in the 22nd century
  • The SciFi Channel series FTL Newsfeed begins in the year 2142.

  • The first mobile suit in the sci-fi anime series Mobile Suit Gundam is completed at space colony cluster Side 3 in 2118 (U.C. 0073).
