Valley Girls[2] is a teen drama developed by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. It is the second series in the Gossip Girl franchise created by Josh Schwartz. The show is planned to premiere in the US on The CW Television Network in 2009. The show will begin through a backdoor pilot on a May 11 episode (Season 2 Episode 24) of Gossip Girl.[3]

Development

  • There were conflicting reports whether a spinoff would air based on the book series The It Girl or center on character Jenny Humphrey or Georgina Sparks. However, nothing was ever confirmed. The creators of Gossip Girl then announced that they are going back to the past with a spinoff involving beloved mother of Serena, Lily Van Der Woodsen before she became a mom. The show will be set in the 1980s when Lily was living as a wild child Valley Girl.
  • The show was officially green-lit by The CW on January 14, 2009 and the proposed plot was announced and the tentative pilot date is to air on May 11, 2009 and from there it will be ordered for new episodes or not.[3]
  • It was rumored that the series would be titled Lily, after the main character of the series. However, Josh Schwartz announced in an interview with E! that this was not the series title.[3]

Proposed Plot

The show would focus on the teenage years of Lily van der Woodsen (nee Rhodes in this series) with her sister Carol, therefore being a prequel and would follow her life living in Los Angeles in the 1980s.[4] Rufus Humphrey (played by Matthew Settle as an adult) will only be in the series if the show is successful and runs for a couple of seasons. If the show is picked up for a series order, creator Josh Schwartz wants to include characters from The O.C. (another teen drama created by Schwartz) Kirsten Cohen (nee Nichol in this series)and Jimmy Cooper in their teenage years as well.[5]
