Har Mar Mall
Har Mar Mall is a moderately-sized shopping mall located in Roseville, Minnesota, a suburb of Saint Paul.
Har Mar Mall derives its name from the original owners, Harold and Marie Slawik. The mall was built in 1961 and was designed by Twin Cities architect Willard Thorson, who also designed Apache Plaza in nearby St. Anthony. (Also opened in 1961, Apache Plaza was razed in 2004.) It underwent major additions to the mall in 1971 (addition of a new strip-mall style wing), and major renovations in the mid-1990s. The mall underwent another major renovation after being heavily damaged in a tornado on June 14, 1981. Until the mid-1990s, the mall was in serious decline, with decreasing numbers of visitors and increasing vacancy. However, the combination of a series of interior renovations, renovations to the movie theaters, and the opening of a new Barnes and Noble bookstore (as well as the addition of some other mid-range department stores) resulted in a huge resurgence in popularity for the mall as a destination for bargain shopping. The shopping mall maintains a reputation for being deliberately downscale, small and unpretentious (in contrast to the much larger and newer Rosedale Center shopping mall nearby).
