Fontana High School (FOHI) is a secondary public school in Template:City-state, in the Fontana Unified School District. Fontana serves grades 9 through 12.

Fontana High School is the home of Steeler pride. Students are provided opportunities for personal and group achievement in a safe environment designed to nurture personal, social and academic development. Fontana High School is committed to preparing students for their individual futures in the twenty-first century.

Demographics

The ethnic breakdown of the 4,091 students enrolled as of the 2006-2007 school year was:

85.1% Hispanic
7% White
5.8% African American
2.1% Other

A by-product of the Southern California post war boom, Fontana High (referred to locally as "FoHi") was built to serve the thousands of blue collar families from across the country who came to work at the Kaiser Steel plant - built in the 1940s - and at the time the only steel production plant of its kind west of the Mississippi. The area continued to grow for the next four decades. By the 1970s, many came to know Fontana also by its high school football team, the FoHi Steelers.

After struggling for many years, the Steelers came to dominate regional high school football for roughly a 15 year period, peaking in the mid to late 1980s when it was ranked among the nation's best. The FoHi football program spawned a following of the type rarely seen at that time in laid back southern California. The team was the source of tremendous pride in the community. On Friday nights, much of the town shut down as more than 10,000 maroon and white clad fans filled Steeler Stadium for epic battles with rival schools like Redlands, Pacific, Eisenhower and Colton.

The Steelers were almost as well known for their traveling "rowdy" fanbase, which followed the team en masse throughout the season and into the playoffs.

After more than a decade of annual playoff appearances, three CIF Championship games (including two victories)as well as a USA Today National High School Championship - the Steelers were a national powerhouse.

Yet by the 1990s, the glory days for the team faded almost as quickly as it began. The harsh reality of an economic downturn (Kaiser Steel shut down in the mid 80's) and a continued population boom led to serious demographic shifts and classroom overcrowding. The addition of a new high school split the talent base and the team fell on hard times - enduring a prolonged string of losing seasons.

In recent years, the school has dealt with a series of racial tension between Hispanic and African/American students. In 2006, A large fight between ethnic groups broke out during a pep rally prior to the game with rival Redlands High School. The fight, reportedly involving more than 500 students, spilled off campus into the surrounding streets - leading to a massive police response. The incident received widespread local and national media coverage. Recently, a random search for contraband at Fontana High School resulted in five student arrests and ten discipline cases, school officials said. More than 1,400 students passed through metal detectors and had their back packs and purses searched at the Citrus Avenue campus before school started. School police chief Robert Ratcliffe said one had a knife, and the other four were in possession of drugs. Officials also seized nearly 200 marking pens that they say are often used to tag on school property.
