Wikipedia:Requests for page protection

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by David Beals (talk | contribs) at 01:48, 25 May 2010. The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Welcome—request protection of a page, file, or template here.

Before requesting, read the protection policy. Full protection is used to stop edit warring between multiple users or to prevent vandalism to high-risk templates; semi-protection and pending changes are usually used to prevent IP and new user vandalism (see the rough guide to semi-protection); and move protection is used to stop pagemove revert wars. Extended confirmed protection is used where semi-protection has proved insufficient (see the rough guide to extended confirmed protection)

After a page has been protected, it is listed in the page history and logs with a short rationale, and the article is listed on Special:Protectedpages. In the case of full protection due to edit warring, admins should not revert to specific versions of the page, except to get rid of obvious vandalism.

Request protection of a page, or increasing the protection level

Request unprotection of a page, or reducing the protection level

Request a specific edit to a protected page
Please request an edit directly on the protected page's talk page before posting here

    Current requests for protection

Place requests for new or upgrading pending changes, semi-protection, full protection, move protection, create protection, template editor protection, or upload protection at the BOTTOM of this section. Check the archive of fulfilled and denied requests or, failing that, the page history if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

Temporary semi-protection vandalism, More IP vandals. Seriously, we've got to stop this. qö₮$@37 (talk) 00:14, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protected for a period of 1 week, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:16, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting temporary semi-protection due to IP vandalism. It's the same vandal as on Horse racing, handled just below.

Spitting cobra and these too, please:
    Human sacrifice (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
    Headhunting (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
    Les Arcs (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
    Springtail (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
    Spar (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
This is per disscussion at User talk:Stephen G. Brown#uk/us spelling, the user who's been dealing with the problem for the last few days.
    Thank you. - Josette (talk) 23:47, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Semi-protected for a period of 3 days, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. With exception to spar since the IP has only edited there onece. If they persistently edit that page, please feel free to re-report or message me. Hopefully, this will slow them down. I do note that, a rangeblock does seems too big. It's at least a /16 range, and by blocking standards, that's a bit too much. Elockid (Talk) 23:56, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I was just going to remove Spar from the list, but you were too quick for me ;). Thanks bunches! - Josette (talk) 23:59, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protect until after the June 24 NBA Draft. This article is going to be a daily candidate for vandalism as the top prospect in the draft.TM 23:28, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection. IP hopping vandal continually adding in lame attempt at a joke. I am too heavily involved in editing the page, otherwise I'd semi it myself. Horologium (talk) 22:18, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The vandalism is out of control! Hekerui (talk) 21:37, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Apparently, the page is currently under an organized page attack by...i'm guessing either 4chan, Something Awful or Ebaum's World, because it's usually one of those three. It's been getting increasingly difficult to add actual information that isn't in conflict with idiots adding vandalism about chicken nuggets and balloons. Doc StrangeMailboxLogbook 21:40, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    I've bought it up on WP:ANI as well so this can get protected ASAP. -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 21:42, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection vandalism, Semi-protection only just lifted, and the same vandal is back at work again - dynamic IP ranges from Bharti Broadband, Hyderabad/Secunderabad, India, so probably too much for a range block. -- Boing! said Zebedee 14:58, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection vandalism, I am requesting protection at least from IP editing for this article. Some guy on his blog claimed to have had sex with her years ago, and that's pretty serious in an article on a candidate running for highly visible political office. Drmies (talk) 17:32, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Declined for now. There's not a huge amount of disruption and there are some constructive IP edits. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:07, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection, With the final to be aired tonight, it would be prudent to protect this article as "spoiler alerts" will be posted. Granted, anyone can go online to see what is being written about the finale but let's save the edits until the whole country (and world for that matter) has a chance to see it aired. 24 hours should long enough for sources to be generated about its end show. --moreno oso (talk) 16:15, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Current requests for unprotection

Before posting, first discuss with the protecting admin at their talk page. Post below only if you receive no reply.

    • To find out the username of the admin who protected the page click on "history" at the top of the page, then click on "View logs for this page" which is under the title of the page. The protecting admin is the username in blue before the words "protected", "changed protection level" or "pending changes". If there are a number of entries on the log page, you might find it easier to select "Protection log" or "Pending changes log" from the dropdown menu in the blue box.
    • Requests to downgrade full protection to template protection on templates and modules can be directed straight here; you do not need to ask the protecting admin first.
    • Requests for removing create protection on redlinked articles are generally assisted by having a draft version of the intended article prepared beforehand.
    • If you want to make spelling corrections or add uncontroversial information to a protected page please add {{Edit fully-protected}} to the article's talk page, along with an explanation of what you want to add to the page. If the talk page is protected please use the section below.

Check the archives if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

May I suggest you contact Grutness (talk · contribs · blocks · protections · deletions · page moves · rights · RfA)? I'm reluctant to go riding roughshod over other admins' actions at the best of times, but even more so on a controversial topic like that. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:11, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Has there been any attempt to resolve the dispute? I'm not finding anything on the talk page, or the WikiProject's talk page. Bradjamesbrown (talk) 10:49, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unprotection The Lost Symbol was protected for a very long time in response to not so much vandalism. I went to the protecting admin some time ago and got no response. 74.108.86.83 (talk) 04:18, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

Copied from a request on my talk page. I don't have time at the moment to process this request. Would appreciate any admin to look at this request. Thanks. Elockid (Talk) 04:28, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The article was only recently semi-protected (2 May). I'll drop a note on the protecting admins page asking for a comment. --RegentsPark (talk) 14:06, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I enacted a six-month protection on the article due to excessive vandalism and other policy violations, which is clearly visible in the Edit History. It's set to expire November 2. Anyone who wishes to edit it can simply sign in to do so. Nightscream (talk) 02:31, 21 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
you could protect every single page and say anyone who wishes to edit can simply sign in to do so. how is that wikipedia policy? and why did i have to go to rfpp to get a reply? i asked you on your talk and got nothing 74.108.86.83 (talk) 06:45, 21 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Note: There is no requirement that editors need to sign in to edit and, while this is indirect, IP editors who wish to edit semiprotected articles can do so using the editsemiprotected template on the talk page. --RegentsPark (talk) 17:32, 21 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
six month protecting is very excessive because there hadn't been much problems from ip editors before that. look at the history. there wasnt much editing at all before the excessive protection. admin nightstream is seemingly unwilling to reconsider and had to be pushed just to reply. 74.108.86.83 (talk) 21:00, 21 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Forgive me if I'm completely misreading the situation, but the protecting admin has replied so this doesn't appear to have been dealt with yet. -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 08:08, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Current requests for edits to a protected page

Ideally, requests should be made on the article talk page rather than here.

    • Unless the talk page itself is protected, you may instead add the appropriate template among {{Edit protected}}, {{Edit template-protected}}, {{Edit extended-protected}}, or {{Edit semi-protected}} to the article's talk page if you would like to make a change rather than requesting it here. Doing so will automatically place the page in the appropriate category for the request to be reviewed.
    • Where requests are made due to the editor having a conflict of interest (COI; see Wikipedia:Suggestions for COI compliance), the {{Edit COI}} template should be used.
    • Requests to move move-protected pages should be made at Wikipedia:Requested moves, not here.
    • If the discussion page and the article are both protected preventing you from making an edit request, this page is the right place to make that request. Please see the top of this page for instructions on how to post requests.
    • This page is not for continuing or starting discussions regarding content should both an article and its discussion page be protected. Please make a request only if you have a specific edit you wish to make.
