Switzerland

Should the squad list for Switzerland be changed to be sorted by position like the other nations squads or left sorted by player number? Tubby23 (talk) 02:51, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Protocol calls for squads to be listed by number if they're known but if they haven't been released yet then list the players by position. On another note, the lines in between players of different positions is completely unnecessary and actually against guidelines. Also, for birth date and age, the player's ages should be listed as of the start of the tournament, June 11, 2010. Spartan008 (talk) 03:06, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Old club vs. new club

Why is it that some contributors to this article rather write down a player's 2010/2011 club side than the actual 2009/2010 club side the player was playing at, in case of a player switching clubs? National pride? I guess some folks think it makes a national football team look better when a member is at FC Liverpool instead of Standard Liege, and the same goes for Schalke vs. Kaiserslautern, whereas the players involved where at Standard Liege and Kaiserslautern respectively in the 2009/2010 season. I propose contributors put the player's 2009/2010 club side behind the player's name and details and not the 2010/2011 team, in case a player is about to switch teams this summer. (By the way, the international transfer window only opens on 1/7/2010, well into the tournament.) Matthijs J (talk)

Based on what I've learned from contributing to football squads is that we would list the team a player played for during the 2009-2010 season. Then if the player was on loan we write a footnote saying for example, "Jozy Altidore was on loan to Hull City in the run up to the tournament from Villarreal" while listing his club as Hull City. Also if the player is changing clubs during the transfer window we would write "Milan Jovanović will join Liverpool after the tournament from Standard Liege" while listing his club as Standard Liege. Have a look at the 2006 FIFA World Cup squads and see if that helps. Spartan008 (talk) 20:14, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Club should be listed as the club the player was with a the start of the tournament. This is normally the 2009-10 season as, has been noted, the international transfer window opens July 1.--ClubOranjeT 11:06, 13 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why isn't Giovani dos Santos of Mexico's squad listed as Tottenham since his loan at Galatasaray is now over? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Robbieofcourse (talkcontribs) 05:14, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Like ClubOranjeT said, the international transfer window does not open until July 1, the same applies to players who go on a season-long loan, they don't technically return to their parent club until that time. Spartan008 (talk) 17:54, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
International transfer is not opened on 1 July (it has no exact date). the International Transfer Certificate issued all the year (for free agent). But the international transfer is permitted unless the new national's transfer windows is opened, so it may happened on 1 July or even 6 July (first working date) or earlier.
Using the old club is discussed in 2006 FIFA World Cup. their performance in old club made them earn call-up, not the new one. But in 2006 edition we also use the club they loaned FROM (not to), i didn't remember the reason is. Matthew_hk tc 06:15, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
loan is different, loan return is not a kind of "transfer" but the International Transfer Certificate is returned AFTER the loan contract ended (nominally 30 June and may be pre-matured). Matthew_hk tc 06:16, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This is getting increasingly annoying. Who are these stupid c*nts putting down players' 2010/2011 season clubs??? The 2010 World Cup is held after the 2009/2010 season but still BEFORE the 2010/2011 season gets underway. Secondly, the 2010 World Cup starts BEFORE the transfer window opening date of 1 July 2010. All players contracted to a club, start the 2010 World Cup as a player of their 2009/2010 season clubs, and 2010 clubs in case of countries with a summer league like Brazil. Matthijs J (talk)

What about unattached players? I've seen that Robert Koren of Slovenia is listed as an unattached player, but he has played the whole 2009-10 season with WBA. So why he's not listed as a WBA player? Other players listed as unattached are Craig Moore of Australia, who played with Kavala until March 31, and two New Zealand players: Dave Mulligan who played until "the end of 2009-10 season" with Wellington Phoenix and Simon Elliott that didn't played for any team after being released from San Jose Earthquakes at the end of 2009. Maybe only Simon Elliott has to be listed "unattached"?--Gleorzov Iasnissaoa (talk) 14:55, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

My opinion on these players are as follows; Simon Elliot is for sure unattached because he was released at the end of the MLS season in November 2009. I think Robert Koren should be listed as a West Brom player since he was with them the entire season. As for Craig Moore and Dave Mulligan, it's iffy because they both haven't been with their clubs and we are now approaching June. Granted we shouldn't base this on how long it's been since they've played club football but we shouldn't just default simply to the last club they were with. Moore and Mulligan should be unattached. --Spartan008 (talk) 16:32, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Angola goalkeeper also unattached for 2005-06 season, so it is unattached as it is attached in the season before the start of World Cup. Matthew_hk tc 11:00, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Another one: Zigic's club, at least until June 30 is Valemcia, not Birmingham City as currently listed. Please somebody edit. (81.172.3.102 (talk) 06:20, 1 June 2010 (UTC)).[reply]

David Villa is officially FC Barcelona player since May 21st 2010, he signed his contract and has even been presented at the stadium to the press and supporters. I don't understand why you like to put his 2009/10 club, that's not the reality, it's just wrong information, he will play the WC as a FC Barcelona player, everybody knows that here in Spain. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.163.50.31 (talk) 21:22, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

He gained the call as a Valencia player and that's the FIFA and common standard. --necronudist (talk) 09:46, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why is Jerome Boateng the only player who has a footnote mentioning his new club? Shouldn't this be consitent? Either all players who are changing clubs should have a footnote like this, or none at all. 84.196.82.15 (talk) 12:28, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

someone had put cannavaro as a arab team player, and not juventus, which is his 09/10 team, shouldn't be the 10/11

and just because villa had signe in may 21st don't mean his contract will started that day, it will starts after the world cup. he just signed a PRE-contract —Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.10.153.223 (talk) 22:27, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

North Korea

North Korea squad has more players than indicated, 30, on the list. And I can't really find any article/news on the announcement of the DPRK squad list on the major websites like FIFA, BBC, skysports, ESPN, goal.com, etc. It's even untraceble on Japanese/Korean websites, it seems. Someone can help?Aa4 (talk) 08:15, 13 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Same problem here... --necronudist (talk) 09:54, 13 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
FIFA announced the "official" preliminary squad list half an hour ago, but one of the three keepers was wrong, and PAK Nam Chol was repeated. It sounds that even the football authorities can't cope with the secret DPRK. Aa4 (talk) 10:37, 13 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No surprise, FIFA is the less reliable source for World Cup stuff... --necronudist (talk) 10:56, 13 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Comfirmed, they do have two Pak Nam Chol's, but the keeper remains an issue. Aa4 (talk) 11:18, 13 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Australia Problem!

HELP! Australia's '30-man preliminary squad' has 31 players in it. Mjefm. And Slovakia's has only 29! (talk) 11:54, 13 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Australia has 30+1 (the injured Kewell), Slovakia has 29 like Germany has 27... is an "up to 30" list, not forced to be exactly 30. --necronudist (talk) 12:21, 13 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Australia has Galekovic, a stand-by. He's not officially a part of the list, not as those players in other squads. According to the purpose of this article, I think he should be removed. Aa4 (talk) 14:50, 13 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Galekovic is only in the team if there is injuries to the other keepers. I agree that he should really be removed. Tubby23 (talk) 03:25, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The majority of the squads in this article are preliminary and don't think just because we show that Australia has one more player than everyone else that it is going to harm the integrity of the article. There are far bigger issues like making sure all the player's ages are as of the start of the tournament (June 11, 2010), that we only show caps as some right now show caps and goals, and that each player's club for the past season is shown (2009-2010) not for the following season. Spartan008 (talk) 11:53, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The No. of players in the squads !!

Just because FIFA hasn't released squad numbers does not mean that they are not accurate. If the editor reference's a reliable source, for example the website of a country's football federation, then the information should stand.--Spartan008 (talk) 14:12, 22 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Caps and Goals

Initially all the squads listed just player's caps but it seems as though attempts are being made to add goals as well. In previous World Cup squads only the caps are listed so should we continue with caps only or also add goals? --Spartan008 (talk) 14:18, 22 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

it just because we cannot find all the caps and goals information for all of the nation. Matthew_hk tc 14:19, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Now that the 2010 World Cup official website has listed every player called-up along with information about their caps and goals, I think the goals column could be added. — Martin tamb (talk) 08:03, 5 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Japan

The captain of Japan is not Shunsuke Nakamura. That is Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi. But he is 3rd goalkeeper, so Yuji Nakazawa will be the game captain. --110.165.228.2 (talk) 13:35, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New Zealand issue

Despite the fact that Wellington Phoenix is based in New Zealand, it is actually part of the Australian A-league. Consider changing the flag icons to Australian flags? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.164.192.235 (talk) 01:59, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham are all Welsh clubs playing in English Leagues....when their players are listed in national squads they have Welsh Flags for the clubs. Same rules should apply. The club is a New Zealand based club. --ClubOranjeT 06:07, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
By the same extent, AS Monaco FC is based in Monaco but plays in the French Ligue 1. I will change all French flags to the Monégasque flag. Bob (talk) 22:01, 4 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hope you understand, guys, that this is simply crazy... --necronudist (talk) 22:03, 4 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The flag that is placed next to a club should be the flag of the national association to which the club is affiliated. AS Monaco FC is affiliated to the French Football Federation, hence the French flag, and Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham are affiliated to the Football Association of Wales, hence the Welsh flag. I don't know which national association Wellington Phoenix is affiliated to, but I would assume that it would be the New Zealand one. – PeeJay 22:05, 4 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Wellington Phoenix is a New Zealand-based club, but played in the Australian A-League, so it should use Australian flag icons, because in a sporting world they're essentially an Australian league team. Perhaps a footnote explaining that those clubs (Wellington Phoenix and AS Monaco) are based in another country different than their flag indicates. — Martin tamb (talk) 08:00, 5 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
So you're saying that just because Wellington Phoenix play in the A-League they should have the Australian flag? Cobblers! That's like saying that Toronto FC should use the United States flag instead of the Canadian flag just because they play in Major League Soccer, or Cardiff City and Swansea City should use the English flag because they play in The Football League. Like I said, flags denote the national association to which a club is affiliated. If Wellington Phoenix is affiliated to the Australian FA, then of course they should use the Australian flag, but not if they are affiliated to the New Zealand FA. – PeeJay 08:10, 5 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Really sorry, I didn't read your previous post clearly about the affiliation. I guess you're right, I found this in Wellington Phoenix FC article: FFA finalised a three-year A-League licence to New Zealand Football who then sub-let the licence to the Wellington-based franchise. New Zealand Football is the national association for New Zealand, so forget my previous comments, New Zealand flag should be used. Thanks for making it clearer. — Martin tamb (talk) 09:58, 5 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Jonathan Mensah

I insist. Mensah currently plays for Granada CF 'B', Spain. I'm from Granada and I saw it. He has played 8 matches (with 2 red cards). Source (Diario Marca): http://www.marca.com/2010/05/31/futbol/mundial_2010/selecciones/ghana/1275336406.html 79.146.27.231 (talk) 12:24, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You can insist all you want but if FIFA says that he is a Free State Stars player then that is what he will be listed as.--Spartan008 (talk) 13:41, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

After all Jonathan Mensah is surely a Granada CF player. According to transfermarkt.de he has left Free State Stars in november 2009 (7 months ago!) to join Udinese, and on january he's gone on loan to Granada CF (http://www.transfermarkt.de/de/jonathan-mensah/transfers/spieler_110622.html). But also on Granada CF website is possible to see that Mensah is a Granada CF player, from 26th december's news when he arrived to Spain (http://www.granadacf.es/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=516:el-granadacf&catid=34:ultimas-noticias&Itemid=59) to 21st May's news (http://granadacf.es/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=735:mas&catid=34:ultimas-noticias&Itemid=59) when his convocation for the Ghanaian National team is mentioned. And on the Free State Stars website is possible to read an interview to the coach in which is say, on 20th January 2010, that Mensah is "lost to an overseas club" (http://www.freestatestars.co.za/news.asp?id=291). Obviously it's FIFA site to be wrong and outdated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gleorzov Iasnissaoa (talkcontribs) 15:40, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Drogba

Am I right in thinking he's not going any more? Because he's still on Ivory Coast's squad list. Koflintedt Schtambuldedt (talk) 14:21, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Walter Gargano birtdate

His birtdate seems incorrect. I will not bother register, so I'll let someone else edit the article. The correct dob is Jul 27, 1984. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.49.208.251 (talk) 22:48, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

According to SSC Napoli's and FIFA's (1, 2) websites, it's 23 July. VEO15 (talk) 00:35, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Julio Cesar de Leon

Julio César de León got injured yesterday, Jerry Palacios is going to replace him. Go we just edit it or is there a procedure like making a notice that he got replaced.[1] Chupu (talk) 16:16, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

All Italian players from home-based clubs?

Since Fabio Cannavaro transferred to Al-Ahli, Italy is no longer a team with all players playing for home-based clubs. It should be noted that Cannavaro became officially part of Al-Ahli on 2 June 2010, a day after the official squads were named (on 1 June 2010). So on 1 June 2010, Cannavaro was still contracted to Juventus, but I don't know if that matters. Maybe the clubs listed in the article only apply to the players as of the say that the squads became official...? Should we keep it as it is or change Fabio Cannavaro's club?

Anelka

It is not a news collection, he was reportly expelled from squad after match 2, but he still a member of the squad at the opening match.

Next time what? a player injured and left South Africa earlier and mark him?! No way wikipedia is not a news collection. Matthew_hk tc 18:46, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Slovakia Erik Jendrišek

Erik Jendrišek doesn't play for Kaiserslautern anymore. He plays for Schalke 04 now —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fetzi87 (talkcontribs) 14:01, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Clubs shown here are the ones the player belonged to fat the start of the tournament. Despite having a pre-agreement to join Shalke for next season, he was still with Kaiserslauten, and listed as such by FIFA for the tournament records. Cheers --ClubOranjeT 16:37, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Also, his transfer won't be recognized in the Bundesliga until 2010-07-01. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 00:56, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Arsenal count incorrect?

The count for Arsenal is 10 players, but I count 11 total - 4 for the French national team, 2 Netherlands, 1 Mexico, 1 Cameroon, 1 Cote d'Ivoire, 1 Spain, 1 Denmark. It would be 12 if you include Senderos as suggested by a previous talk poster.

I only see 1 Arsenal player in Netherlands squad.--ClubOranjeT 11:06, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Serbia quirk

It may be worth mentioning either here or in the main article that Serbia's 23 players come from 23 different clubs, and that they are the only nation this World Cup to do this (although USA has 23 players from 22 clubs). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.18.50.51 (talk) 05:14, 30 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request from Rahvas, 1 July 2010

The first sentence of article is that the World Cup will be held..., but it should be that World Cup is held..
