S. Somasegar is the Senior Vice President of the Developer Division at Microsoft Corporation.[1] His team creates tools, runtimes and technologies for developers, designers, software development teams and the technical computing community. Examples are the Visual Studio and Expression Studio families of products, the .NET Framework, Silverlight[2], Internet Information Services, Media Server, and the Technical Computing platform, including Windows HPC Server and related multicore and manycore development technologies. His team also owns MSDN and TechNet online properties to enable a deep connection with the developer and IT professional audience.[3] Somasegar also oversees the Microsoft India Development Center and Microsoft Canada Development Center.[4][5]

Somasegar joined Microsoft in 1989 and contributed to eight releases of Windows before heading up the Developer Division.[6] Somasegar has a master's degree in computer engineering from Louisiana State University and a bachelor's degree in electronics and communication engineering from Guindy Engineering College, Anna University, in Chennai, India.[7] In November 2006, Somasegar was awarded an honorary doctorate (honoris causa) degree by Anna University.[8][9] In February 2008, he was presented the Asian American Engineer of the Year Award.[10]

Somasegar lives in the Seattle area. He and his wife have two daughters. He frequently shares his thoughts via his blog.
