Toonloop is a free software application for live stop-motion animation[1]. The term "live" refers to the fact that the animation is constantly playing while we are editing it. It allows you to create stop-motion animation, pixilation, and other animation techniques and the result is constantly seen while the user is adding images to the animation. It is a project of Alexandre Quessy[2] with help from Tristan Matthews[3]. This software lets you try the sort of thing characteristic of the work of Pierre Hébert,[4] an artist on the National Film Board of Canada.
Alexandre Quessy presented artistic performances using this software at SAT[5] and ETS[6] in Canada and at the Piksel 09 Festival in Norway[7][8].
Toonloop is released under the GNU General Public License. It has a Debian package.[9] Toonloop was mentioned briefly at the 2009 Open Video Conference[10].
A number of animated videos made with Toonloop can be found under the toonloop tag on Youtube and on Vimeo. Toonloop has also been the topic of blogs.[11]
Functionalities
Toonloop can be used to create time-lapse animations such as this one by the TinyVGA workshop.
