Pamela Anderson in 2003, sometimes labeled as MILF by gossip websites[1][2][3]

MILF, an acronym for "Mother I'd Like to Fuck", is a common colloquial term generally regarded as vulgar when spelled out. It denotes a sexually attractive older female, generally between 30 and 50 years of age.

History

The concept of a MILF predates the term. Jocasta was the mother of Oedipus whom he meets and has sex with. Mrs. Robinson from The Graduate exemplifies the concept.[4]

The term itself was first documented in Internet newsgroups.[5] It was popularized by the 1999 film American Pie refering to Jennifer Coolidge's character: 'Stifler's Mom'.[6]

Usage

It was the name given to the marijuana sold by Nancy Botwin on the Showtime series "Weeds". By 2008, the term was familiar enough to be used on television series such as 30 Rock (episode "MILF Island"), Scrubs (episode "My Last Words") and Pushing Daisies (episode "The Norwegians") without necessitating its definition (which would have violated Federal Communications Commission rules). In 2007, Spirit Airlines ran a promotional campaign titled "M.I.L.F.", described as meaning "Many Islands, Low Fares" but deliberately playing on the Double-entendre.[7]

Tori Amos' song "Big Wheel" on her 2007 album American Doll Posse refers to herself (or rather the character she portrays in the song) as a MILF.[8]

In a joke based on the concept, The Daily Show's Jason Jones interviewed Elizabeth Kucinich, wife of then-presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich, and referred to her as a "FLILF" ("first lady ...") She indicated, by her confusion, that she didn't understand the reference,[9] although clearly the audience did.

In 2010 Tracy Morgan ended a red-carpet interview by abruptly shouting into the microphone: "Sarah Palin, you're the hottest MILF in the world! She's a MILF!".[10]

Yummy mummy

Where the use of the word MILF is considered beyond the pale, the non-offensive term "yummy mummy" also applies (particularly in the UK). However there is a school of thought that this should only be applied to women under 30 who are actual mothers.[11]

How exactly did a once-taboo erotic fetish become a widespread, culturally sanctioned ideal, a perverse mix of branding and empowerment? After all, a hot mom used to be a tragedy, whether in the literal sense (Oedipus' Mom-I'm-Fated-to-Fuck, Jocasta) or in the bittersweet Mrs. Robinson sense ("Oh, God. Oh, let me out," begs Benjamin Braddock). Alternately, it was an insult: "Oh, yeah? That's not what your mama said last night." A hot mom was by definition a bad mom. {{cite news}}: Cite has empty unknown parameter: |coauthors= (help)
