Taraf led the press coverage of the Aktütün scandal, in which it accused the military of negligence and deceit. The headline reads "Cut the threats and explain".[3]

Readers who thought the paper sided with the government were surprised to read a headline calling the prime minister the chief of staff's lapdog[4].

Taraf ("Side" in Turkish, tagline: ‘to think is to take sides’) is a liberal Turkish newspaper.

Editorial line

Taraf has distinguished itself by opposing interference by the Turkish Military in civilian affairs.[5] However some question its sources.[6] (The military responded by canceling the newspaper's accreditation from press releases at its headquarters.[7][8]) A political journal, Nokta, had similarly leaked military information and was closed down in 2007 due to pressure.[9][10][11] The founder and owner of Taraf, Başar Arslan, dismisses accusations of bias and outside funding, saying that he has made a considerable loss in his mission to create the country's most prestigious newspaper.[12] He considers Taraf an investment that will eventually pay off.[13]

Taraf has a staff of 70,[14] and is printed at the Sabah press at an estimated cost of $500,000 per month.[15]

It has been speculated that the leak was related to the Ergenekon investigation.[16]
