Boonaa Mohammed is a Canadian Muslim poet.[1] Mohammed was the winner of the 2007 Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Poetry Face-Off “Best New Artist” award.[1] He has a playwright residency at Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto.[1] Although he is better known for his poetry, Mohammed is also heavily involved in the hip-hop community, and speaks out about local and global issues.[2][3]
Background
He is a second generation immigrant of Oromo ancestry.[2] He says that he overcame a troubled life that included selling drugs and dropping out of school.[3] He would then go on to graduate as valedictorian of his high school and attend Ryerson University.[3]
