Since 1964, various animated and live-action theatrically released films based on Hanna-Barbera cartoons have been created and released to theaters. While alive, Joseph Barbera and William Hanna (the founders of Hanna-Barbera) were involved with each production in some capacity before their separate deaths.

History

The first Hanna-Barbera film to be released to theaters was Hey There, It's Yogi Bear! in 1964, which was distributed by Columbia Pictures. The next theatrical film to come out was The Man Called Flintstone in 1966.

In the early 1990s, the third animated feature Jetsons: The Movie was released to theaters in 1990 followed by Tom and Jerry: The Movie released in 1993 and the two live-action Flintstones films The Flintstones and The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, released respectively in 1994 and 2000.

During the early 2000s, both Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed was released in 2002 and 2004 respectively. In late 2010, Yogi Bear was released to theaters on December 17.

Future

On July 12, 2009, it was announced that David A. Goodman had been hired to pen a Hong Kong Phooey film.[1] Alex Zamm is set to direct and Broderick Johnson, Andrew Kosove, Brett Ratner, and Jay Stern are producing.[2] On July 31, 2009, it was announced that Warner Bros. will release the movie, with co-financing from Alcon Entertainment (Johnson and Kosove's production company) and Hanna-Barbera (an in-name-only unit of Warner Bros. Animation).

Jonny Quest is currently slated for release on September 21, 2012 and recently entered production at Warner Bros. Zac Efron will play Jonny and Dwayne Johnson may be playing Race Bannon. The Smurfs is set for theatrical release on July 29, 2011 from Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation.
