I did not email the board; that was just to scare you until the matter resolved itself with the help desk. I plan to let this incident slide after looking at the discussion between yourself and Maru. It seems you did not know Coolcaesar so it wasn't a personal favor, but rather just a quick judgment call on your part.

Battles

Hello Antonio,

thanks for your answer. In fact, the whole category Battles by country and its subcategories are corrupted. Basically, a lot of battles are in wrong countries with wrong protagonists (not in the text itself but with wrong categories). I am currently trying to fix that, by taking over every category and making something standardized (based on the concept Battle in actual country/Battle of country/city/people).

Feel free to help if you want.

Thanks again

Updated DYK query Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article Sergio Blass, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently-created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Caribbean notice board

Hola, Antonio. Thanks for the message re the Caribbean notice board. My idea was to define it as broadly as possible, to help get things off the ground by having a critical mass of people involved -- ignore technicalities like El Salvador not having a coast 'cos, heck, it can always be split up later if necessary. As it is, it seems to have lost pretty much all of its steam, which is a shame. Cheers, Hajor 02:38, 24 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I'm well aware of your articles on Argentine television and Argentine actors. Unluckily, I don't share your tastes on TV shows; I prefer to see shows like Pretenders :o). Keep up the wood work, Mariano 13:28, 30 August 2005 (UTC).[reply]

Aircraft specs policy

Several weeks ago, you voted in the WikiProject Aircraft Specifications Survey. One of the results of the survey was that the specifications for the various aircraft articles will now be displayed using a template. Ericg and I have just finished developing that template; a lengthier bulletin can be found on the WT:Air talkpage. Naturally, we will need to begin a drive to update the aircraft articles. However, several topics in the survey did reach establish consensus, and they need to be resolved before we implement the template. It is crticial that we make some conclusion, so that updating of the specs can resume as soon as possible. You can take part in the discussions here. Thanks for uploading Image:Trinidad vs. De La Hoya.JPG. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, ie in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{gfdl}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{fairuse}}.) See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you created this/these image(s) yourself, you can use the {{PD-self}} tag. Thank you.Who?¿? 07:27, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

BBC autograph hunting

Hello there,

I'm producing a feature on autograph hunting for The Jeremy Vine Show on BBC Radio 2 on Tuesday. I came across an article on your site at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Autograph_collecting_do's_and_dont's. I was intrigued by the page, and would love to speak to the person who wrote it... Could you possibly send me their contact details, or alternatively pass mine onto them? I'd be really interested to talk to them.

Hi Antonio it looks like the person from the BBC didn't leave a contact you can send a message to the Jeremy Vine show on the BBC here [2] I'd guess they'd be interested to talk to you since you made the wikipedia autograph page. Bye Arniep 23:50, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

they use abusive and illegal measures

These are the arguments posted on the page of "Moldovan language".

For these facts many users have been blocked and more forced to accept an unilateral point of view of the Administrator Mikkalai and 16 years old Kid [[Node _ue]]. He does not bring arguments as we do, instead he uses his power to block many times (for one week or 24 h). Like for yourself, he warned you and mock on you saying that you don't have the right to say something.

I agree with you when you say to redirect to "Romanian language". Anyway "Romanian" was once recognized in the constitution as official language of the Moldova between 1991-1994 and many attempts to remake this were done.

"Moldovan language" is in fact indentical with Romanian language, renamed as a "language" for political reasons by the government. Although similar theories have been fielded for other languages, this proposal is now believed to have been made to serve political purposes only, and nobody has provided any evidence so-far towards the idea that Moldovan and Romanian are not from common linguistic stock.

The term "Moldovan" is also a soviet invention (see Dept. of State & CIA). A separate language based on these was declared and promoted for political reasons, in order to further advance a Moldovan identity separate from that of Romania.

The soviet Russians called people of Moldavia Republic: "Moldovan" because they wanted to create a new nation different from Moldavians/Romanians.

There is also in Romania a region called Moldova.

Russians manipulated people of Republic of Moldova and washed their brains to create a new person, the soviet "Moldovan". The real name in English is Moldavian, in Romanian is Moldovean and in Russian is Molidavanin. So "Moldovan" belongs to no language!

Very interesting. For those who bother making a click on the link I will cite:

"The name 'Moldovan language' (in Russian, МОЛДaВCKИЙ ЯЗБIK 'moldavskii iazyk'); in Romanian, limbă moldovenească, or, in Cyrillic characters, ЛИMбЗ MOЛДОBeНЯCKЗ was applied in the Soviet Union, as during earlier periods of Russian occupation of the area in question, to the * Romance language used in the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic (corresponding more or less to the formerly Romanian territory of Bessarabia, annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940). In reality, 'Moldavian' is nothing else than the *Romanian language as spoken in Moldavia, i.e. both east of the river Prut in Bessarabia (now the Republic of Moldova) and west of the Prut in that part of the former province that remains as part of Romania. Claims made in the post-Second World War period by the Soviet linguists that 'Moldavian' should be recognized as a distinct Romance language were not taken into seriously by western scholars. Under Soviet domination, the *Cyrillic alphabet was in the use in the Moldavian SSR until the passing of a law on 31 August 1989 (i.e. before the break-up of the Soviet Union) proclaiming Moldavian as the official language of the Republic and the use of Latin script. Apart from a few lexical differences (mainly technical terms borrowed from Russian rather than, as in standard Romanian, from western languages), the written language was thenceforth indistinguishable from that in use in Romania and moves are afoot to harmonize the technical terminology of Moldova with that adopted in Romanian specialized dictionaries. After the Republic of Moldova declared its independence of the Soviet Union in 1991, its Constitution (1994) declared that the official language was limba moldoveneasca 'the Moldavian language'. At the time of writing, moves to have this amended to 'limba română' the Romanian language have not yet succeeded.

GLANVILLE PRICE"

Even at the internationally level (officially) is recognized that in Moldova the people speak romanian. Just for your record the US State Dept. (their foreign office), the french ministry of foreign affairs(France), the UK foreign office (UK), the german ministry of foreign affairs (Germany) are stating one think: in Moldova it is spoken romanian. romanian is the official language even if the name is moldovan. For the others motivated "moldovan language" followers please check the links:
  • German Foreign Ministry, Germany
  • US State Department, USA
  • France – Ministere des Affaires Etrangeres
  • UK – Foreign & Commonwealth Office

Others except the Russian are in the same manner. All the western powers refuse the russification attempts.

Artificial creation of the "Moldavian language". Evolution from Romanian to so called Moldavian

Lately were discovered some facts that prove that the theory of the both languages romanian and "moldovan" - was prefab since the 1812-1918. Some important aspects of the problematics: functioning of the romanian language in the sphere of the laic education system from Bessarabia of the year 1812-1918, the attempts to codyfing the romanian language in conditions of a linguistic situations, causes that determined to degradation of the language compared with spoken romanian on the right side of the river Prut, taking out the name "romanian" and introducing the term "limba moldoveneasca", the intention of the tsarist government "to create a dialect neared to the slavic language".

In the first years of russian occupation (after 1812), because 95% of the population being romanians which they knew only their mother tongue, romanian was admitted as an official language in the institutions of Bessarabia, used along with russian. Gradually the russian language win importance. According to the dates offered by the Dept. for ruling the Bessarabia from 1828, the papers from bureau were held only in russian, and around 1835 it is established a term of 7 years time in which the state institutions will still accept acts in romanian language. As concerning the education, romanian was admitted as language of teaching only until 1842, after that being taught as a separate object. Thus, at the theological Seminar of Chişinău, romanian language is found on the list of compulsory subjects, with 10 hours weekly, until 1863, when the department of romanian is closed for good. At the highschool no. 1 from Chişinău the pupils had the right to choose between romanian and german or between romanian and greek until 9th of Feb. 1866, when the state counselor of the russian government interdicts teaching of the romanian language because the pupils "know this language in the practical mode, and its teaching follows other goals". Around 1871, the tsar published an ucaz "On the suspension of teaching the romanian language in the schools from Besserabia", because "In russian Empire are not taught local speeches".

Two examples of the identity were given: (one is from the constitution of both countries – see the identity)

Comparison Romanian/Moldavian

The example below demonstrates that a formal text in Romanian and Moldovan may be completely identical, the only difference being the spelling of the î vowel in the word vântul. The colloquial languages show more difference, which varies over the area.

Hey Antonio, I thought I had already left you a message somewhere, but after looking around, I don't see it anywhere. The message I thought I left you went something like this: Glad to have you aboard. I'll try to do some background on Carlos Almaraz this week (it should definitely mention that he was gay). As you can tell, we have decided to focus the project on Mexican-American and Chicano topics. I notice you have written a good deal about sports, and that is one area that is lacking (I noticed the additions to the section—good job). And if you have a good library nearby, you should be able to get the resourced you'll need for what you want to research. I look forward to working with you! BTW the article on Mexicana was excellent.--Rockero420 03:03, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Gracias vale. I've got a special award in the works for project participants, so you've got one coming your way after another article or too. I noticed you used the word "güey" (buey). Do Boricua say that too? I thought it was just a Mexican thing. Also, do Boricuas say "agüevo", as in "of course" like us? And do you guys say "coño" like the Cubans? Just a little curious because I've had a lot of Mexicans, Central Americans, and I have a close Cuban friend, but I don't really know that many Boricuas. I would love to learn more about PR (all I really know about is Lolita Lebrón, a fascinating woman, and West Side Story), and I'd prefer to learn it from people who know. Anyways, thx again for the recognition. PAZ, --Rockero420 07:00, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Comma before LoPbN dates?

Hi, and thanks for your contribs on List of people by name-tree pages!

You may be interested something that's been diffidently discussed for over a year, but hasn't gotten any attention since i asked for opinions on resolving it about 6 months ago. I've put a lot of commas between the link to the subject's bio and their parenthesized dates of birth &/or death, since that has been the predominant approach for a long time, but my cautiousness about a change has been the strongest opinion for it that i've heard for a while before, and since then.

Earlier this week, i announced my intention to eliminate the comma before (but not the one after) the dates, come the new year; that too has brought no response.

Your interest in the pages suggests you're among those whose continued silence should justify my confidence in that move, so i hope you'll speak up at Talk:List of people by name#Commas if you've got enough of an opinion to bother commenting on it.

Sorry if I sound too aggravated. In mid-2004 you created the article on E.J. Montini, the essential facts of which remained intact to this day. Unfortunately some of them were less than accurate, as Montini himself has pointed out. There appears to be very little biographical info on him online. --Kizor 13:05, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Año Nuevo, etc.

Hello and Happy New Year, 'mano! I meant to get back to you about your Chacon-Limon article. Great work on the background there. I think at some point we may need to move some of that info to some sort of Mexican-Chicano rivalry article, but for right know it is fine where it is.

The thing about the word Chicano (which needs to be explained in the word's article--the narrowness of the definition is one of the reasons there is so much disagreement on the talk page), is that it is an ethnic signifier. Ethnicity is both touchy and highly abritrary subject, so it becomes a matter of personal identity rather than a blanket term. And since the meanings of words change over time, labels that were very convenient in the turbulent 60s and 70s no longer have lost some of their initial value. These days, people that have "graduated" from the Chicano movement no longer associate themselves with leftist causes don't like their ethnicity to be associated with their politics.

Some people who used to identify as Chicanos feel that the term is too exclusive since it doesn't include Central Americans, Boricuas, etc. They tend to prefer Hispanic or Latino. Some people don't like the American aspect of Chicanismo, and consider themselves simply "Mexican". And some people never identified themselves as Chicanos in the first place. In Tejas, they have a long tradition of having their own culture and identity. So it doesn't surprise me that Mexican American tejanos felt no need to call themselves Chicanos, because when the word gained prominence, it filled a void in the collective consciousness and answered the question "Who am I?" Identifying themselves as Chicanos helped root people, especially the youth, into the "here and now" when they felt uprooted from the "motherland" and excluded from mainstream society, so it was more useful in places like California and Colorado.

Now that we have (almost full) social inclusion, the need for the word is not as great. I hope this explains a little bit. I've been wanting to tackle that article and do a mean rewrite, but writing new articles is so much more fun than laboring over someone else's errors.

I also wanted to write you about feminist research. You may want to check here, and there are a fair amount of databases online. I usually do my research in the library (--I just tend to trust books a bit more than websites), and the library I use has a great research staff. (And since we're on the subject, did you hear about that group of women in India who murdered their neighborhood rapist in court? The police were not protecting them so they took justice into their own hands. I believe in letting the punishment fit the crime, but I could not feel sorry for that man.) If you're anywhere near ASU, you may want to visit their library for better resources than I can point you toward.

I don't know if you noticed, but I just finished an article on Estela Ruiz. If you're anywhere near Phoenix, you might be able to get a picture for it. I know they have a shrine in their back yard that is open to the public. I know its a lot to ask, so take your time. But when I started reading about this woman, I just became fascinated and had to write about her.

OK pues, I hope you have a fantastic 2006. Tu wiki-amigo, Rockero420 16:31, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Joaquin has been using that image to identify himself, but I know it is much easier to copy/paste those types of awards than to start from scratch, so I suspected it might be unintentional. WikiProject: Puerto Rico

Hey, thanx for leaving a message in my Talk Page and for inviting me to contribute to this WikiProject. I already added my name to the list of contributors. Let's see what I can add in the following days.

However, and since you mentioned it, I've been wondering what's the point of the country infobox if there's already one in the Puerto Rico page? I mean, wouldn't it be repetitive? you might also copy and paste the one in the article.

Anyway, you can visit several WikiProjects from other countries and see what else you can add to this one.

Puerto Rico project

Hey, Tony! Long time!!!

I'd be honored to help when I get back on a regular basis. In fact, it sounds like a wonderful diversion from vandal patrol. I'll drop a line real soon. - Lucky 6.9 00:47, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the offer, I will do my best to help (Actually Puerto Rico is already on my watchlist) but b/c of my limited time available I'm not sure how much i'll be able to do. :) I'll try, though!

Saludos y gracias por tu mensaje!!!

Boxing info-box

I suggest that we should organise info-box of boxers.

  • Name
  • image
  • nickname
  • weight class
  • date of the birth
  • birthplace
  • Date of the death
  • deathplace(necessary?)
  • style
  • record

I think hometown should be removed because it is fluid, and add a column of formal name because some boxers use ring name for boxing fights. For example, Henry Armstrong to Henry Jackson Jr, Max Baer to Maximillian Adelbert Baer. Do you agree with this? I need your opinion. Bye Yappakoredesho 17:41, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Car: Thanks for the note on my user page. I write articles every day and that has been going for three years so as you can imagine I can't even remember everything I've done lol.

I probably placed that image there because of this: I saw the image at a few websites by looking through Google and obviously believed it to be public domain. What should we do in this case?

An Esperanzial note

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Celestianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

New York Puerto Rican boxer

_ _ Hi, 'Ton, i notice with pleasure that you continue steadily contributing new LoPbN entries on notables.
_ _ I'm writing about Jose Basora, described there as

... New York Puerto Rican boxer

which i'm tentatively changing to

... American Puerto Rican-descended boxer

even tho i fiind it about 3/4 of a word too long for his situation and LoPbN's very compact, stylized descriptions. Of course, that's based on my assumption that i grasp what you understand his situation to be.
_ _ Puerto Rican bios are the ones most difficult for me to as to their LoPbN entries -- partly bcz it's not as easy to "just throw up my hands" as i might, say, with ethnic Russians born in Kazakhstan during Soviet rule, or with Kurt Gödel who seems to have had at least four or five citizenships. Please forgive me if i'm just thinking out loud, bcz i do so here in the hope of avoiding appearing to brusquely edit you, and of perhaps learning something from you that will make me wiser in future cases.
_ _ What i try to do on LoPbN, as first priority, is get down "nationality", usually in a sense that is equivalent to citizenship: British, usually, rather than Welsh or N. Ireland, Spanish rather than Basque or Catalan, and so on. Part of that emphasis is that there is less nuance involved in identifying citizenship than the other categories, which can so much more easily be treated with the thoroughness they deserve in the bio articles: trying to state them at all fairly and precisely would take up more than their share of "mental space" in an LoPbN entry, without much benefit in terms of improved navigation to the desired bio. Another part of that emphasis is that there are so many ethnicities that are smaller than the country that predominantly includes them, so that there is danger of the ethnicity alone being less helpful than the citizenship alone. For instance, many English speakers in this decade can identify a country or two that has Kurds. But ten years ago Kurds sounded like a food, and there are still very few who know there are still Assyrians, or can tell you where to look for Berbers and Uighurs. (I think you'll recall my emphasis on these entries serving as good routes to the bio articles rather than encouraging people to treat them as information sources.)
_ _ That being said, IMO Puerto Rico is a special case, first bcz the Commonwealth status is so unusual -- virtually unique in US, i guess, since Alaska statehood several generations ago, and of course bcz so many can place Puerto Rico in the Caribbean. I'm tempted to call it a "semi-colonial status", except that that is too vauge to really add any userful information to a discussion.
_ _ On LoPbN i convert Sardinian, Native American, and Uighur to "Italian Sardinian", "American Mohawk" (or whatever tribe), and "Chinese Uighur" (usually deferring to the other editor's opinion in recognition of my inability to spot the probably rare cases where ethnicity does help navigation rather than just duplicating the article's info). Even so, my bottom line is usually to let Puerto Rican stand without "American" before it, unless the person seems based in US locations outside of Puerto Rico, or to be notable in relations to their US military service.
_ _ W/ Jose Basora, i've no doubt "New York" is too much detail for LoPbN (tho i assume it's important for his bio article -- esp'ly if Nuyorican identity is important about him). My doubts lie with whether and how to include "Puerto Rican" in the LoPbN entry. As i say, i rule out treating "Puerto Rican" like his nat'ty on LoPbN, bcz to the extent that "American" doesn't serve well, he seems more like at most an expatriate Puerto Rican than an unqualified Puerto Rican. And i think "American Puerto Rican" suggests Puerto Rican-born, which i see is not the case for him. Actually, i think if the one-word "Puertorican" were accepted English, i'd go for "American Puertorican-descended" without reservation. I'm more concerned in this case with the length than the level of detail; as it is (just one character longer, but, IMO more significantly, nevertheless a word longer), for me "American Puerto Rican-descended" is slightly uncomfortably long. I'll be interested in your take, esp'ly as to how the specifics of his relation to Puerto Rico affect your view.
--Jerzyt 01:48, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
(I'm embarrassed, on going to effect that change, to realize i wrote so much assuming a mistaken recollection of "New York" rather than "New York born"! Fortunately, it doesn't change the thrust of what i wrote. [blush]

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Activism, etc

Hey Antonio, I was just wondering how you were doing. I've been incredibly busy lately, but I managed to find time to rewrite one article on the Chicano project's expansion list, and I finally translated another. But since Spanish is my second language, I'm sure it could use some finessing.

Its funny, you know? They really discourage "activism" on Wikipedia, but I don't see as how what we do is anything but! It may not be overt, but I think that simply providing the information is a way to, as you say, combat stereotypes. But it also provides a resource for people who are activists, (political, social or otherwise), because information and education are our best weapons in the struggle. I think it was Steve Biko who said, "Your mind is a weapon. Sharpen it!" (or something to that effect).

Anyways, I think you, your pop, and Joel have been doing a great job on the PR wikiproject. Whatever task you pick up next, let me know and I'll see if I can help.

Thanks for staying in touch, amigo, y te cuidas.

Látigo Coggi

Dear Martin,

Thank you for your message and for your many articles about Argentina. I particularly liked the one about Juan Martín "Látigo" Coggi, who was one of our last great champions. It's sad to say that box is declining in Argentina (and probably also in the whole world). You may add the following issue in the article (I leave you the task since your English seems to be better than mine): the fights with Eder González, particularly the first one (Tucumán, 12/17/1993), which was very controversial. Coggi was clearly dominating the fight, but for some reason, may be excessive confidence, he neglected his defence for a second and suffered a terrible knock down. The referee clearly helped him to stand up after a very slow count. Coggi was groggy and suffered a harsh punishment during the following rounds, but managed to slowly recover his strength round by round and eventually knocked González out on the 7th (it was actually a TKO). Despite the questionable action of the referee (depriving González of the title and at the same time exposing an almost unconscious Coggi to serious harm), that fight was one of the many samples of Coggi's incredible recovering skills, which makes some of his fights unforgettable. After such a polemic decision, a new bout was mandatory, so Eder González and Látigo fought again on 03/18/1994 at MGM Grand, Las Vegas. Then, Coggi won by TKO in the 3rd round. --Filius Rosadis 17:40, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Locomotora Castro and Víctor Galíndez

You did a very good job also with Locomotora Castro and I feel a bit ashamed because the Spanish Wikipedia doesn't have any entries about those boxers, and only a stub about Félix Trinidad.

You've also created Víctor Galíndez! That's certainly one of our old times heroes. His fight with Richie Kates (Johannesburg, South Africa, 5/22/1976) was an incredible battle. Galíndez was intensely bleeding, so he had to use the referee's shirt as a towel to clean the blood. The shirt became red and is now in a museum. Galíndez won by K.O. in the 15th round (remember those old 15 rounds fights?).

As for Castro-Jackson, I saw it on TV and I remember Jackson waking up and trying to find out what the hell had happened just some seconds before. I really didn't remember Jackson getting up after that famous right hand to restart the fight. Anyway, although Castro was bleeding and was being overwhelmingly defeated by Johnson, he simulated he was about to fall, he pretended he was almost K.O., and then shot when nobody expected.

Because of such tricks, Locomotora used to be also nicknamed "Roña Castro" from time to time, but some journalists consider that pet name derogatory and avoid it. In this case roña is a slang meaning something like dirty trick.

Castro is as strong and hard as a rock, but he has never been capable of disciplined, systematic training.

Box is violent? Off course it is. It's a fight after all. But football (or soccer, as it's called in America) has caused much more casualties, including a war. And Monzón, who was a violent man outside the ring, was completely under control during all his fights; box made him a respected and admired champion whilst the rest of his life drove him to prison and death.

Hasta pronto.

Blowouts

Man I asked my buddy to DVR that for me...but having no HBO myself, I missed it. I know that it was filmed on location and they asked a lot of raza, locals, and students etc. to participate. One of my compas came out as an extra. It's been a redlink on the template for too long, but alas....

Sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner Toño--I know you had some questions for me. I think that anyone who participated in the Mexican American War is definitely part of the history of Mexican Americans and Chicanos. That's pretty cool that you found un tocallo histórico. Do Puerto Ricans use that word tocallo?

About founding an organization, I really wouldn't even know where to begin. My guess is that all you would have to is make a page, get some people interested, and make some templates. If you decide it's a good idea, let me know, and I'll help however I can.

Great initiative

Dear Antoinio,

It sounds like a great initiative. However, I don't think that I would be the right person to include. I was only born in Brazil - to Danish parents - and within a couple of years moved with them a number of different countires. Bascially, I have only my love for Brazil, no adquate knowledge write or exhange any articles. Best wishes, Varga Mila 10:35, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.

"the Rat"

Hey Antonio, I've got a boxer for you to look into when you get a chance. His name is Raúl "the Rat" Macías, and he was world bantamweight champion in 1957. He was a Mexican from the Tepito barrio. He lost the title to Alphonse Halimi, a French fighter. Three years later Mexico sought to reclaim the title through the efforts of José "Tapato" Becerra, who knocked Halimi out in the ninth round.

Sometimes I like writing articles that I know nothing about. But this time, I thought I'd leave it in the hands of an expert 8).

Oh and I was wondering, is there a List of bantamweight champions anywhere? Just curious...

Marchas

No, no he podido asistir ningunas de las manifestaciones, pero pienso en irme el lunes. I think it's great that you're going to support, because technically Puerto Ricans aren't even immigrants! (Although they were treated that way when they first started moving here.) My political science professor was telling me that he was impressed by the marches, but he was afraid that Latinos would "sell out", like he says white immigrant groups did, after they get their rights, and forget that all these movements are really about human rights. That is, that we would quit fighting. You my friend are proof to the contrary. I think you should definitely represent la bandera de tu país and show Latin Unity. And make sure the Phoenix march is in 2006 U.S. immigrant rights protests!

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

Association

Dear Antonio, thanks for your suggestion of joining the association. I see that as a good idea, may be an utopia, but a good idea at the end. The point is to be able to contribute in a different way (a plus) to the normal way Hispanic/Ibero-Americans wikipedians do. They move themselves by their own interests (otherwise, the cost of contributing would outweight the satisfaction they get by doing so). So the idea of a community portal sounds good in the sense that can put in contact Hispanic wikipedians with similar interests. Think on topics related to history, wars, economy, migrations, ideology and politics, soccer, religion and folklore, and so on. Let me know how I can help you with that topic. --Poldavo 19:19, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I nominated this at {{prod}}. I hope you won't take it personally. It has been on cleanup since April 2005. I found no google references for this term. The article is an incomplete list of what appear to me to be very different political situations ranging from Russia to Puerto Rico. There is already an article about separatism that lists many of these movements. If you disagree, please help me understand why, I'd be interested to learn more. If you agree, that's great too. WP:PROD is a discussion-less process. You should put a comment on the article's talk page to explain why you think the article should be kept (since you didn't use an edit summary), but removing the prod notice is the actual way of contesting the deletion. But I certainly wouldn't mark the removal of a deletion notice as a minor edit. NickelShoe (Talk) 20:24, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!

Clarification

Dear Antonio, thank you for your nice message in my discussion page. Just to give to you some useful suggestion in the discussion between Hispanic and Latin American for including both Spaniards and Brazilians in the same token. We here in Spain use the term "Iberoamericano/a" or "Iberoamérica" (I suppose can be tranfered to English like "Iber American" & "Iberoamerica", or something like that). In this form, we include all the American lands that share the same Iberian cultural origins, meaning Iberian as belonging to the Iberian peninsula (it includes Portugal and Spain). -Poldavo 09:06, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Thanks and kind, Esperanzial regards, —Celestianpower háblame 16:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

List of Puerto Ricans

One of the main concerns about the "list" is that it is getting out of control and that many names of people who have only had their "15 minutes of fame" or simply are non-notables are being added. I propose that we set up guidelines as to who should be admitted with a clear definition as to the terms "notable" and "fame". I am calling upon the parties interested to express their opinion and to help develope these guidelines. I believe that after we take a vote and reach a censensus, said guidelines should be followed and posted either on the article or the articles talk page. We need your help. Regarding your comments made here, Please see Wikipedia's no personal attacks policy. Comment on content, not on the contributor; personal attacks damage the community and deter users. Note that continued personal attacks may lead to blocks for disruption. Please stay cool and keep this in mind while editing. Thank you. --Ragib 15:27, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I agree with Ragib here, of course. If some of the things said by the ones who want to delete the page sound offensive to you, please say so, and why - do not attack the people themselves. That is not the way we do it on Wikipedia. For starters, you could delete the words "by a racist? Wikipedia is not a personal webpage for racists.", or strike them out by editing your own text and putting <s> and </s> at the start and the end of the passage concerned. Yes, you are entitled to say that if the tango list gets deleted, List of MLB players should then be deleted as well. I would second that wholeheartedly by the way.--Pan Gerwazy 00:19, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I understand your feelings, but while voting, it is better to use politely formulated arguments and to direct them at the people concerned. The proposer was definitely not a racist. I know the discussion was difficult to follow, precisely because one opposer used a completely opposite argument compared to the proposer (oh, and I am sure that other guy was not a racist too).
In my view (I am not a Latino, I am just your typical European person who likes flamenco and songs by Pyotr Leshchenko) (I actually danced tango for three hours today at the Ghent Feesten), the words "a very obscure topic" were NOT racist, but bordering on "chauvinist" and "ethnocentric". What you wrote on my talk page is a good explanation of why in your eyes, the conversation at that point came over as "racist". OK, your comment IS long (too long for putting next to your vote - and in any case your vote is primarily directed at the proposer), but since the author of "a very obscure topic" also took a lot of text in his comment, you would have had every right to put all that as comment under his text. Salu2 - take care!--Pan Gerwazy 20:27, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!

In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

WikiProject Ecuador

hola antonio

i just joined the wikiproject ecuador. i've seen that you started this some months ago. i want to focus on ec related articles. i also plan to start the ecuador portal. the current structure on the projects mainpage seems to be a little bit too complex for me. i borrowed the structure from another project and did setup a sample at my user page User:Ma xyz/WikiProject Ecuador. would you agree if for a start i would replace the current project page with that? i will then also start to add sub pages, to-do lists etc...

Muchas gracias! --Pristigaster 09:20, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

September Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!

November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

AfD nomination of Joey Curtis

I've nominated Joey Curtis, an article you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but in this particular case I do not feel that Joey Curtis satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion; I have explained why in the nomination space (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and the Wikipedia deletion policy). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Joey Curtis and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (Inkpaduta 21:58, 4 February 2007 (UTC)). You are free to edit the content of Joey Curtis during the discussion but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. Puerto López (Ecuador)

Hi! I saw your name on the page for the Ecuadorean Wikiproject. I will be traveling to Ecuador in about two weeks to Puerto López county. I will be in Las Tunas and Puerto Rico mostly, but I will almost definitely be making day trips to Agua Blanca, Playa de los Frailes and Isla de la Plata. I have never been before, but I will be bringing my camera with me. If you have any specific requests for photos you would like taken, please let me know and I will do my very best to get them. I am happy to take photos of any of the villages I will be in, but also if there is specific wildlife you desperately want photos of that you think I will be able to find on Isla de la Plata or elsewhere, please do not hesitate to send me an existing photo or some information (so I know what to look for!) and I will try to get one! I'd appreciate it if you responded on my talk page. Thanks, and I hope I can help somehow! Goyston talk, contribs, play 00:55, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

However, maintaining a Portal is no easy task. As a member of the WikiProject Puerto Rico, please consider helping out in one of the following tasks:

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Joseph Serrano, by 65.0.101.5, another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Joseph Serrano fits the criteria for speedy deletion for the following reason:

not notable, nothing on the page is sourced and most of it is extremely speculative and opinionated - he only had one pro fight which was against another 0-0 boxer, and he was eliminated in the first round of Olympic competing, he's one of thousands of boxers and only listed here because he was shot

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Joseph Serrano, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Please note, this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Joseph Serrano itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. --Android Mouse Bot 2 05:33, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of Ray Reyes

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Ray Reyes, by Barsportsunlimited, another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Ray Reyes seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

Main Page

Surprise! History of Puerto Rico has been selected for presentation on the Main Page for Monday, June 18, 2007 (tomorrow!). My congratulations to all editors who helped bring this important Puerto Rican topic to FA, especially to Joelito. But don't celebrate yet. There's two important things we should do:

  1. Review the article. Since it became FA, it has received extensive edits from users, and therefore may need copy-editing and MOS-adjustments for presentation. Some users related to the Main Page-selection process have already made many edits, and we should continue their good work to make sure the article is pristine.
  2. WATCH IT!! Given the Main Page's exposure (millions view it every day), FA articles which are presented there get viewed by many people, including vandals. Please watch the page carefully, reverting vandalism as you go. I've seen Main Page articles get overwhelmed with vandalism, and since many more people keep going to it on the Main Page, we don't want them to see a vandalized article. This is a 24 hour task (as long as its presented), and requires the collaboration of the entire Puerto Rico WikiProject.

Well, gente, take pride that on June 18, Puerto Rico's history will be presented on the grandest of pages in Wikipedia. Peace! - Mtmelendez (Talk|UB|Home) 10:13, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Article Assessment for WikiProject Puerto Rico

Hello, JeanetteMartin! As you may know already, WikiProject Puerto Rico, in conjunction with the WP:1.0 program, is trying to assess the quality of articles within our scope to help us focus our work on the articles who need it the most. Unfortunately, there is a backlog of more than 799 unassessed articles within our scope. I, in the name of the members of WikiProject Puerto Rico, ask you, if you have the time, to help your fellow members clean up the backlog by assessing unassessed articles and review articles already assessed to make sure they still meet the quality criteria. You can learn more about the WikiProject's article assessment program at Wikipedia:WikiProject Puerto Rico/Assessment.

I, personally, found assessing articles manually took too much time, so I looked around and found a script that makes assessing articles easier. If you would like the script's help, just copy the following code to your monobook.js.

 // [[User:Outriggr/metadatatest.js]]
 importScript('User:Outriggr/metadatatest.js');
 assessmentMyTemplateCode = ["{{PuertoRicoproj|class=|importance=}}"];

You can find the manual for the script at User talk:Outriggr/metadatatest.js. If you need help, please contact me. Thank you for your time. I hope you can find the time to help. This message has been automatically delivered to all WikiProject Puerto Rico participants using AWB. Happy editing! Yours sincerely, Eddie 17:10, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A {{prod}} template has been added to the article Nathaniel Heatwole, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice explains why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Adriana Marines

A tag has been placed on Adriana Marines, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Tim Pierce 22:40, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Tribute to "the Marine"

I would like to pay a small tribute in this edition to Tony "the Marine". Editing since May 24, 2004, he has been one of our project's most active editors and has become one of Wikipedia's most recognized writers. He has authored over 400 articles, including 4 Featured Articles, 1 Featured List, 10 Good Articles, and 28 DYKs. His name has appeared in newspapers and magazines and has been mentioned by politicians and artists. He has brought Puerto Rico's history and its people to the web. He has shown the world that Puerto Ricans have done much more than just be gangsters and drug dealers. He has shown the world that we have contributed to history and the world just as much as any other group of people.

On September 29, 2007, Tony announced that we would not be writing for Wikipedia anymore. We, the members of this project, are sad that he will not be able to continue to spread the word of Hispanics' contributions here on the web, but I, for one, feel honored that he has entrusted us with the duty of continuing and improving his excellent work.

Tony, rest assured that your contributions, your wisdom, and the help you provided to all of us when we were new users will be remembered for generations. Que Dios te bendiga, Tony, y que tu recompensa sea grande en el Reino de los Cielos.

Viva Puerto Rico libre. —Agüeybaná 16:52, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Ray Mercer

Antonio, Thanks for looking for references for Ray Mercer's military service. I've found a number of references that indicate Marine Corps service. However, I've also found references to Army service.

See this Eastside Boxing, which indicates that he was a U.S. Army boxer: "About “Merciless” Ray Mercer: Ray Mercer, 34-6-1 with 25 knockouts, is a former Army Sergeant that captured Olympic gold in the 1988 Seoul Olympics." The Army references are more specific, consistently giving his rank as sergeant.

This reference from Army.com implies he was an Army boxer: "During his 20 years of Army boxing experience, Bigelow recalls only one other garrison fighter making the Olympic trials: Ray Mercer..."

From an Fort Stewart, Army publication: "... Soldiers like Ray Mercer, who boxed for 5th Corps in Baumholder..."

Albigensian Crusade

I'm contacting you out of courtesy as you have contributed to the page and may wish to supply your own citations. If you feel this doesn't matter to you, please ignore it. This page was rated as a Good Article, but has been downgraded because nobody did the donkeywork of listing the attributions to the various statements provided, which is after all a fairly serious dereliction of duty in what's suppoed to be a historical record. Having discussed the withdrawal of GA with LuciferMorgan, I give notice that I am sitting down with the three classic original source texts (Puylaurens, Vaux-de-Cernay and de Tudèle - the last in the Livre de Poche edition as the Martin-Chabot is long out of print) to add the missing inline citations to this page. I do not intend at this point to make any textual alterations, but if comments are made which are NOT justified, be prepared to state your sources now.

Flag Icons in Bio's

Please do not put flags in Bio's:

Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style_(flags)#Not_for_use_in_locations_of_birth_and_death

Not for use in locations of birth and death

The use of flag icons in the birth and death information in a biographical article's introduction and/or infobox is strongly deprecated, as flags imply citizenship and/or nationality. Many people born abroad due to traveling parents never become citizens of the countries in which they were born and do not claim such a nationality. For example, actor Bruce Willis was born on a U.S. military base in Germany, so putting a German flag in his infobox, for any reason, might lead the casual reader to assume he is or was a German citizen. Similarly, many people die on foreign soil due to war, vacation accidents, etc. without any effect on their actual citizenship or nationality.

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Mexicana early timetable.JPG

Thank you for uploading Image:Mexicana early timetable.JPG. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 16:15, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of James R. Jordan, Jr.

A tag has been placed on James R. Jordan, Jr. requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. A tag has been placed on Isabel Santiago requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Maria Jimena Piccolo2.JPG, which you've sourced to http://members.tripod.com/~chufos/chicos/jime.html. I noticed that that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the image (or other media file) agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the image to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the image has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Images lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thanks for uploading Image:Norma_Nolan_crowned_Miss_Universe.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 18:09, 4 October 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sherool (talk) 18:09, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

An article you created is about to be deleted: Tools which can help you

The article you created, Dary_Matera is about to be deleted from Wikipedia.

There is an ongoing debate about whether your article should be deleted here:

The faster your respond, the better chance the article you created can be saved. This is because deletion debates only stay open for a few days, and the first comments are usually the most important.

There are several tools and other editors who can help you keep the page from being deleted forever:

  1. You can list the page up for deletion on Article Rescue Squadron. If you need help listing your page, add a comment on the Article Rescue Squadron talk page.
  2. You can request a mentor to help explain to you all of the complex rules that editors use to get a page deleted, here: Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User. But don't wait for a mentor to respond on the deletion page.
  3. When try to delete a page, veteran editors love to use a lot of rule acronyms. Don't let these acronyms intimidate you.
Here is a list of your own acronyms you can use yourself: WP:Deletion debate acronyms which may support the page you created being kept.
Acronyms in deletion debates are sometimes incorrectly used, or ignore rules or exceptions.
  4. You can merge the article into a larger article.

If your page is deleted, you still have many options available. Good luck! travb (talk) 18:23, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Flags and records

Greetings, during the past months, there has been a lot of activity and active discussion surrounding articles within our scope. Of particular interest is one that took place in Flag of Puerto Rico, in which several project members exposed their points of view regarding the tones of our flag. Ultimately, research brought forth a severe loophole in the regulation employed by the Senate of Puerto Rico. Our flag doesn't have official tones! Attempting to prevent future conflicts, I presented a proposal in the project's talk page. The subsequent discussion served as an perfect example of consensus. Thanks to everyone for your participation. In other news, our friend Tony the Marine added another impressive achievement to his brilliant resume. On December 8, 2008, his DYK hook for Ivan Castro (soldier) broke the previous all-time record for more views, receiving 71,300 visits. Tony has also been actively cooperating with this Newsletter, the inclusion of a new "Did you Know?" section, was entirely his idea. - Caribbean~H.Q. 22:34, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:Eastern Timetable.JPG)

Thanks for uploading File:Eastern Timetable.JPG. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:09, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Juliet Ortega requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. ukexpat (talk) 17:42, 18 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Those images are not freely licensed, and as such, according to WP:NFCC#8, it should only be used in any article if its omission was detrimental to the reader's understanding of the article. I know WP:NFCC may sound scary or baseless at first, but Wikipedia has since its origins decided to keep the use of non-free content to a minimum. And we only really use non-free image when it's more than simply useful. It must be necessary.

suspension bridges in Puerto Rico

Hi AntonioMartin! Back in 2004, you edited the Bayamon, Puerto Rico article to comment about a pedestrian suspension bridge and about suspension bridges in Puerto Rico. It happens that the phrasing was copied by a Wikipedia mirror site in 2004, and I recently relied upon the mirror site for some comments I made in Arenas Bridge, a DYK article. It was once the longest bridge in PR and, while it could have been built by the Spanish as a suspension bridge, it was not. I am being told the mirror site, economicexpert.com, can't be kept as a source. Anyhow, I wonder if you have or could obtain any source about suspension bridges in PR, like whether there are believed to be just 3 of them. Your commenting at User talk:Doncram#Arenas Bridge would be most appreciated. Of course, your interest on this was a long time ago, so i perfectly understand if you can't help me now. Anyhow, it's great to see you still contributing now, on other topics, so much later. Cheers! doncram (talk) 19:58, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oops. I hadn't noticed the message above when I posted this one. I'm sorry for the repetition. I'm merging up now. By the way, what's administrative rollback? --Damiens.rf 04:45, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Antonio, I am troubled that I am not seeing any response by you here acknowledging the concern AniMate raised, about your inappropriate use of admin rollback. Worse, I notice you repeated the same [13] after this discussion opened. Rollback abuse by an admin during a content dispute is not something that should be tolerated lightly, and I find it really important that we get a clear assurance you understand this issue and won't do this again. Fut.Perf. 09:37, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

won't happen again. My apologies to those concerned. 22:33, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

None of us is perfect. I'm glad you acknowledged this and don't plan on making the mistake again. AniMate 05:31, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced BLPs

Hello AntonioMartin! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 151 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 683 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

Frank Costello article copyright violation

It looks like huge sections of this article are blatant violations of copyright from the "Five Families Book" where the article is copied word for word (hence the complete lack of citations and the style of writing). I suggest it be cleaned up and cited quickly or It will be soon added to the articles for deletion.Nefariousski (talk) 21:54, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Nadine Dwek requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. The article Nadine Dwek has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Former actress who appears to have only had a small, relatively short-term role in a Brasilian soap opera, after which she retired from acting. No significant coverage found.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Michig (talk) 21:56, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Jack Frazier requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. File source problem with File:Scenic Airlines.JPG

Thank you for uploading File:Scenic Airlines.JPG. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 20:41, 1 May 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 20:41, 1 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You recently engaged in this edit[15]] in William Walter Kouts, which is substantially about your father and illustrated by a photograph of him. This edit removed a well-warranted notability tag. I believe that your editing of this subject constitutes a conflict of interest. Will you agree to refrain from editing this article, and any other articles in which your father is mentioned, and their talk pages, in the future? Will you consent to not post on them in project pages and just generally exercise caution to avoid a COI? ScottyBerg (talk) 12:55, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe the talk page is a little bit too much. I believe it's fair that Antonio or his father use the talk pages to suggest changes to be evaluated and eventually implemented by non-COI users. This, for instance, is what Jimbo (currently) does about his bio. --Damiens.rf 14:11, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If it was an article about one of these two editors, certainly talk page use would be appropriate. People who are the subject of a biography have the right and perhaps even obligation to object if their biography is inaccurate or unfair. But that does not apply in the Kouts article or to the merger target. We specifically don't want someone mentioned in an article, or a family member thereof, !voting in a merger discussion. I've also added a request that Antonio not post in project pages about articles in which he has a COI. The aim is that decisions about articles be made by editors not having a COI, and not influenced by conflicted editors. ScottyBerg (talk) 15:42, 20 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion to pull WikiProject Mexican Americans under WikiProject United States

It was recently suggested that WikiProject Mexican-Americans, to which you are a member, may be inactive or semi active and it might be beneficial to include it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. After reviewing the project it appears that there have not been any active discussions on the talk page in some time and the only content updates appear to be simple maintenance so being supported by a larger project might be beneficial. I have begun a discussion on the projects talk page to see how the members of the project feel about this suggestion. --Kumioko (talk) 00:20, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please can i point you into the direction of this --JetBlast (talk) 07:53, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Request

I received this e-mail. Please place the article under protection, thank you,

"A vandal is defacing the article on Jose Baez: [17], Jose was born in PR, but the editor who looks like he is a redneck, is saying her was born in NYC. I have listed 5 references and he has removed them without reason. What do you suggest that I can do to protect this article?"

Tony the Marine (talk) 17:44, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Since it was just an anonymous and the IP is already blocked, why is a full protect necessary? --damiens.rf 18:35, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am the original author for this article. Angel's family requested several inclusions and one of them was that his name be in English and that his dissapearance not be included in the article because they still harbor hope to find him. At that time I will include this when appropriate. Please revert to his name as originally published. If you want to call him "Angelo" you may do so in the spanish version of the article in wiki. Please respect his family's wishes. User:Misterfrisky
