Leg 1 (Freezeflame Galaxy → Hightail Falls Galaxy → Wild Glide Galaxy)

In the race’s first Roadblock, one team member had to scale an immense wooden wall using a mechanical ascender. They could then take a Launch Star to their next location. Their partner would take a separate launch star and meet up with them en route.

Additional tasks
  • At the starting line, teams had to use Ice Flowers to reach the Launch Star to their next location. The Ice Flowers were locked inside compartments and teams had to complete a puzzle on a nearby computer screen to unlock them. Teams had to choose 10 locations featured on the Mario Grand Prix from a large map. The last team to complete this challenge was eliminated.
  • Once in the Hightail Falls Galaxy, teams had to ride Yoshis and feed them Dash Peppers to ascend the vertical wall to their next Launch Star.
  • In the Wild Glide Galaxy, teams rode large Jibberjays to the Pit Stop.

Leg 2 (Wild Glide Galaxy → Donkey Kong Isle)

In this leg’s Detour, teams had to choose between Cart and Cold. In Cart, teams flew to Monkey Mines and had to ride mine carts along a hazardous course. Once at the end end, they would receive their next clue. In Cold, teams flew to Gorilla Glacier and had to swim amongst the frozen coral reefs to find their next clue. In the Roadblock, one team member had to enter the factory of Kremkroc Industries to find four Puzzle Pieces, which, when pieced together, would reveal the location of the Pit Stop. In the Speed Bump, Shy Guy & Fly Guy had to play a song on bongos to the rhythm of a conductor.

Additional note

Leg 3 (Donkey Kong Isle → DK Mountain)

In this leg’s Roadblock, one team member had to take the cannon to the summit of the mountain and then take either a snowboard or skis down the mountain. In the Detour, teams chose between Snowman and Snowfall. In Snowman, teams had to use the snow to create a snowman at least 6 feet (1.8 m) tall. In Snowfall, teams had to use an avalanche beacon to find a buried clue.

Additional task

Leg 4 (DK Mountain → Thwomp Volcano)

For this Detour, teams had to choose between Rock Climb or Rock On. In Rock Climb, teams had to rock climb up the blocky face of the mountain to reach their next clue at the top. In Rock On, teams could take a path up to the top. However, the path was swarming with enemies that had to be defeated. In the Roadblock, one team member had to traverse their way through the interior of the volcano to reach their partner at the bottom. Along the way they had to play two minigames. In the first, they had to jump into a small whirlwind and spin through the air, collecting 20 coins. In the second, they had to curl into a ball and roll through an obstacle course, collection eight gems. Failure of either task meant they had to try again.

Leg 5 (Thwomp Volcano → Donut Plains → Vanilla Dome)

At the Intersection, teams had to join with one other team to complete tasks and make decisions together until further notice. In this special Roadblock, one team member from each of the intersected teams had to traverse through the Vanilla Dome to reach the Red Switch Palace, where they would have to guide an Invincible Koopa Troopa through an obstacle course. After the Roadblock, teams were no longer Intersected. In the Detour, teams had to choose between Light as Air or Spring of Vert (Green). In Light as Air, teams had to climb a small underground mountain to reach Cape Feather and then use it to fly to the top of the Dome. In Spring of Vert, teams had to carry a large spring up to the top of the Dome and use it to bounce past a group of Paratroopas.

Leg 6 (Vanilla Dome → Ice Land)

In the only Fast Forward of the race, one team had to enter the icy caves of the Fifth Division and figure out how to exit them. They would have to get Super Leaves and fly through a hole in the ceiling while carrying an ice block to defeat Nipper Plants that were in the way. In the Detour, teams chose between Frozen and Flying. In Frozen, teams had to break through ice blocks containing coins to find one with their next clue. In Flying, teams had to get their next clue from the cloud above, using Parabuzzies to reach it. In the Roadblock, one team member had to strip down to the bare minimum of clothing and carry a heavy ice block through Ice Land to reach the castle, where they could exchange it for their next clue.

Leg 7 (Ice Land → Twilight Town)

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member would have to lift boxes of toys, food and supplies and deliver them to the impoverished people of Twilight Town. In the Detour, teams chose between Terror and Type. In Terror, teams would have to fight against and defeat an Atomic Boo. In Type, teams had to type out their next clue on a typewriter. However, the "p" key was missing, and teams had to search for it in the basement.
