Mohapatra, or alternatively, Mahapatra, is a family name in the Indian state of Orissa. It is one of the few surnames that cuts across caste lines and was ordained on a largely meritorious basis. A family received the title Mohapatra by Orissan kings in recognition of exemplary work in their respective vocations.[citation needed]
