"The Last Walt"

"The Last Walt" is the twentieth episode of the third season of the American sitcom Modern Family, and the series' 68th episode overall. This episode originally aired on ABC on April 18, 2012. It was written by Dan O'Shannon, Paul Corrigan and Brad Walsh, and directed by Michael Spiller.

Plot

Luke's neighbor Walt dies; Haley throws a party in Jay and Gloria's house without permission; Phil and Alex spend some time together.

Production

This episode was written by Dan O'Shannon, Paul Corrigan and Brad Walsh, and directed by Michael Spiller. Along with the main cast, this episode featured Barry Corbin as Merle Tucker, Cameron's father.[1] Philip Baker Hall, who played Walt,[1] made his final appearance on the show because of his character's death.[2]

Reception

The episode was watched by 10.21 million viewers with an adult 18-49 rating/share of 4.1/11, a slight decline from the previous episode, "Election Day".[3]

This episode received mainly positive reviews. Leigh Raines of TV Fanatic gave a 3.5/5. He liked the moments of most characters, one being Manny's small but rather memorable role. She stated "Manny had a minor storyline but it happened to be my favorite of the night."[4] One of the moments she didn't enjoy was with Merle Tucker, Cam's father. "'The Last Walt' was an episode with a couple of different storylines running, unfortunately the dinner with Cam's dad was probably my least favorite."[4] Matt Dougherty of The Filtered Lens gave a 7/10.[5] He liked the portrayal of Cam's father, but not the other moments. "The Last Walt was a weaker episode mostly because a lot of it just did not feel like the show we have grown to love. Sure the plot with the two fathers was great, but everything else really fell flat aside from a few moment. With only four episodes left in the season, I hope that the writers can bring back what made this show so great to begin with."[5]
