The major characters as they appear in Tales of Xillia 2

Tales of Xillia is a Japanese role-playing game released for the PlayStation 3 on September 7, 2011 in Japan.[1] The game is localized for North America on August 6, 2013 and Europe on August 9, 2013.[2][3] Its sequel Tales of Xillia 2 was released on November 1, 2012.[4] The protagonists in Tales of Xillia are designed by Mutsumi Inomata and Kōsuke Fujishima.[5] The new protagonist, Ludger Will Kresnik, in Tales of Xillia 2 is designed by Daigo Okumura.[6] The world of Tales of Xillia is divided in two by Maxwell: Rieze Maxia[kanji 1] and Elenpios[kanji 2]. Rieze Maxia is ruled by two countries, Auj Oule[kanji 3] and Rashugal[kanji 4]. After the events of Tales of Xillia, Rieze Maxia is united under one ruler and the barrier separating Rieze Maxia and Elenpios no longer exists.

In Tales of Xillia, Jude Mathis meets and accompanies Milla Maxwell who intends to destroy a weapon called the Lance of Kresnik due to it being powered by a Spyrix; a power source powered by sacrificing the spirits around its vicinity. Tales of Xillia 2 takes place a year later and follows Ludger Will Kresnik who is hired by Clanspia Inc. to destroy alternative timelines because the spirit Origin is unable to sustain the abundance of souls. In order to destroy the alternative timeline, he has to kill the living being who is the Time Factor.

Creation and conception

In Tales of Xillia Mutsumi Inomata and Kōsuke Fujishima designed the protagonists.[5] They were each given characters which played to their strengths. During development, an old woman design was considered but was dropped. For the antagonists, the development team gave them motives that were equally sound to the protagonists. During the development of Tales of Xillia, developer wanted the players to decide whether to recruit Gaius and antagonist Muzét or vice versa. Due to time constrains, this idea was dropped.[5]

In Tales of Xillia 2, a new protagonist was needed because the game would focus on Elenpios.[7] Because Elenpios is a modern setting, the Tales of Xillia protagonists received redesigns to match what the citizens of Elenpios would wear.[7]

Protagonists

Jude Mathis

Jude Mathis (ジュード・マティス, Jūdo Matisu) is a medical student who excels in martial arts. He is designed by Kōsuke Fujishima. Since Jude was designed to become more mature and decisive towards the end of the game, Jude's Japanese voice actor was instructed to portray Jude as a passive party leader.[5] He is voiced by Tsubasa Yonaga and English dubbed by Sam Riegel.[8][9] Since his debut, Jude ranked on the Tales character popularity polls.[10] He appears in Tales of the Heroes: Twin Brave as a playable character.

Milla Maxwell

Milla Maxwell (ミラ=マクスウェル, Mira Makusuweru) is the successor of the master of spirits, Maxwell. In Tales of Xillia 2, the protagonists are joined by Milla from an alternative timeline, in which Milla did not succeed Maxwell and lives as a normal human. She is pulled into the real timeline by Elle. During the events of the game, the alternative Milla disappears out of existence upon meeting the real Milla. Mutsumi Inomata was chosen to design Milla due to her strength in designing cool women.[5] Inomata stated Milla's hair was the most difficult part to design and was adjusted multiple times during development. The development team wanted Milla to be devoid of feminine feelings but were overruled by the female staff.[5] She is voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro and English dubbed by Minae Noji.[8][9] Since her debut, Milla ranked on the Tales character popularity polls.[10] She appears in Tales of the Heroes: Twin Brave as a playable character.

Alvin

Alvin (アルヴィン, Aruvin), full name Alfred Ven Svent (アルフレド・ヴィント・スヴェント, Alfredo Vuinto Suvuento), is a young mercenary. Alvin's father was a prestigious man from the Svent family. After his father's death, his uncle forced his mother into a sexual relationship and is the result in Alvin's distrust in others.[11] He is designed by Kōsuke Fujishima. Fujishima stated Alvin's design was easy though the color of his scarf was hard to decide on.[5] The writers wanted Alvin's intention to betray the party to be obvious to incite the player's curiosity on his motives. Alvin's personality is the personification of Jude's adult personality if the events of Tales of Xillia did not occur.[5] He is voiced by Tomokazu Sugita and English dubbed by Matthew Mercer.[8] Since his debut, Alvin ranked on the Tales character popularity polls.[10]

Leia Rolando

Leia Rolando (レイア・ロランド, Reia Rorando) is Jude's childhood friend. She is designed by Mutsumi Inomata. Her cheerful personality was chosen to balance the party's serious atmosphere.[5] She is voiced by Saori Hayami and English dubbed by Lauren Landa.[8] Since her debut, Leia ranked on the Tales character popularity polls.[10]

Elize Lutus

Elize Lutus (エリーゼ・ルタス, Erīze Rutasu) is a young girl who was forcefully implanted with a device called a Booster which augments her magical abilities. Her Booster takes the form of Teepo (ティポ, Tipo), a talking doll who is the personification of her inner thoughts. She is designed by Kōsuke Fujishima for his speciality in designing young girls.[5] Elize was the last character to be created since the development team felt having a young kid fight would conflict with the serious atmosphere. Teepo was created to be Elize's partner as a result.[5] Elize is voiced by Yuki Horinaka while Teepo is voiced by Haruna Ikezawa and English dubbed by Erin Fitzgerald.[8] Since her debut, Elize ranked on the Tales character popularity polls.[10]

Rowen J. Illbert

Rowen J. Illbert (ローエン・J・イルベルト, Rōen J. Iruberuto) is an elderly butler. He is designed by Mutsumi Inomata. Rowen's role is intended to be a mentor to the party.[5] The writers wanted Rowen to have the air of a retired soldier.[5] He is voiced by Mugihito and English dubbed by Todd Haberkorn.[8] Since his debut, Rowen ranked on the Tales character popularity polls.[10]

Gaius

Gaius (ガイアス, Gaiasu) is the king of Auj Oule, one of the two countries in Rieze Maxia. Before his reign as king, Auj Oule was divided and controlled by tribes who's leadership were succeeded by bloodline. After Gaius' tribe were ordered into a suicidal situation, Gaius decided to conquer Auj Oule and to promote a democracy where competent leaders would rule. Gaius' intended to utilize the Lance of Kresnik to destroy Elenpios and save Rieze Maxia conflicted with the party's intention on saving both worlds. He is designed by Mutsumi Inomata and was given a realist personality to contend with Jude's naive and idealistic personality.[5] He is voiced by Ryōtarō Okiayu and English dubbed by Travis Willingham.[8] Since his debut, Gaius ranked on the Tales character popularity polls.[10]

Muzét

Muzét (ミュゼ, Myuze) is a spirit and Milla's older sister. In Tales of Xillia 2, an alternative timeline's Muzét was a time factor host and is killed by Ludger. She is voiced by Asami Sanada.[8]

He meets Elle Mel Marta during a train hijack by Exodus. After the train crashes and Clanspia Inc. treats his injuries, he becomes burdened with a huge debt. Clanspia Inc. then hires Ludger for his Kresnik bloodline powers in order to destroy alternative timelines. During the end of the game, Ludger or Elle have their existence erased along with the alternative timelines. If Ludger survived, he become the leader of Clanspia Inc., replacing Bisley, and meets Lal Mel Marta, Elle's mother and his wife in the alternative timeline. He is designed by Daigo Okumura.[6] He is voiced by Takashi Kondō.
