TransAsia Airways Flight 222 (GE222)[2] was a scheduled domestic passenger flight that crashed while attempting an emergency landing in Penghu, Taiwan, on 23 July 2014. Flight 222 was travelling from Kaohsiung to Magong with 54 passengers and 4 crew members on board. Initially, 51 people were reported killed, however Transportation Minister Yeh Kuang-shih later revised the death toll down to 47 and added that 11 people had survived the crash.[3][4]

Aircraft

The flight is operated with a ATR 72, registration B-22810.

Crash

Flight 222 was en route to the Magong, Penghu Islands from Kaohsiung when it made an emergency landing in Penghu County. It was scheduled to depart from Kaohsiung at 16:00, but it took off at 17:43 due to typhoon Matmo.[4] The flight's first landing attempt at Magong Airport reportedly failed. The pilot then requested to make a second attempt, after which the control tower lost contact. The plane reportedly crashed in the township of Husi, causing a fire involving two homes.[4]

Probable causes

The cause of the crash was suspected to be linked to Typhoon Matmo, which passed over Taiwan and Penghu earlier in the day; radar images showed heavy rain over the area at the time of the crash.[5]

Passengers and crew

The pilot was identified as 60-year-old Lee Yi-liang, the co-pilot as Chiang Kuan-hsing, 39. It was not immediately known if they were among the dead. The captain has more than 22,000 flying hours on their record.

There were 54 passengers on board, 4 of whom were reported to be children. The flight had a crew of four.[6]
