Welcome!

Hello, JamieJones, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. I assume this article is about a fictional book series? I have added the context tag to it. Thanks . -- --Gary Kirk (talk) 14:05, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

re: thanks for tips

Hi Jamie, To start with, if you haven't already, read WP:HEP. Hope that helps! ;-)

I've checked your userpage, and you seem to have found Recent changes. --Gary Kirk (talk) 20:35, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes you can do that. Except I have templates that are applicable to me, not you, such as being a Recent Changes patroller etc. --Gary Kirk (talk) 16:48, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Questions

Hmmm. I guess a page like that could be a usefull addition. And if you've been looking for places to ask questions and haven't found a good place yet, it might hint that we indeed lack a good place for some of those questions yet. Or that we aren't good at explaining new users where to ask them.... The standard place to look for q&a places is Wikipedia:Where to ask a question. And most new users who want to ask questions about whatever do so at Wikipedia:Village pump. You should be able to get help there. There are good reasons to try keep Q&A's at just a few places (like the village pump), so people able to answer them don't have to watch many different pages for new questions. So I'm not 100% convinced a new place is such a good idea. But maybe you can get others opinion on this by asking on for instance Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)? User:Nlu if you're watching, this ip was blocked! JamieJones 20:21, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

text below From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Jump to: navigation, search You have attempted to edit a page, either by clicking the "edit this page" tab or by following a red link.

Your IP address is 64.235.102.2. Please include this address, along with your username (if you are a registered user), in any queries you make.

Your user name or IP address has been blocked by Anonymous editor.

The reason given is: returning vandal who had been blocked for a month already

You can email Anonymous editor or one of the other administrators to discuss the block. You may also edit your user talk page if you wish. If you believe that our blocking policy was violated, you may discuss the block publicly on the WikiEN-l mailing list. Note that you may not use the "email this user" feature unless you have a Wikipedia account and a valid email address registered in your user preferences.

All right, I'll look into it. --Nlu (talk) 23:08, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like your address was blocked by User:Anonymous editor. I'll leave a message on his/her chat page. --Nlu (talk) 23:10, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay thanks for waiting.I see this IP was blocked before for a month for vandalism. So is this a shared IP? If it is don't worry this has been happening a lot lately to different editors in wikipedia. Hopefully people who can deal with these type of technical problems can fix the bug. I have unblocked JamieJones. --a.n.o.n.y.m t 00:14, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nope no suggestions just keep doing good work. You will get busier if you do become one so be warned. Thanks --a.n.o.n.y.m t 01:10, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes there are several responsibilities of an admin. Closing Afds, blocking users, deleting pages, protecting pages and other duties and all of them have to be done by policy. --a.n.o.n.y.m t 20:05, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: two quick question from new user

1. In your preferences, there's a "Use raw signature" checkbox; check that and fill in the code you want. (Make sure that the necessary wikilinks are in place - to your user name, also to your talk page if you want to do that.) Wikipedia:Sign your posts on talk pages#Customizing your signature has more information and tips about that.

2. This is a little harder, and I didn't figure it out until I was doing my RfA. Wikipedia:How to use tables has some information about how to do this. Here's the raw code for the table I sent out to people that supported my RfA:

Basically, the vertical bars are for sections along a row of a table. So new vertical bar -> new section. I copied the instructions at the top from another RfA box (User:Encyclopedist/Barnstars has another editor's collection of RfA thanks boxes; you can look at the code through "Edit this page"). I think I did change the colors though, but thankfully, that's straightforward. You can use "white", "black", "solid blue", etc. And I don't think the /div tag needed to be there; I was messing around with several versions before I sent out my messages.

Anyways, I hope this helps; I'm still learning this somewhat too, as I haven't had to use tables much during my time here. If this doesn't do the trick, maybe User:Encyclopedist could look into it further, or go in and look at some templates that use tables (country infoboxes are good sources for this). Happy editing!

AOL Problem

IF you are on AOL, get off of this format. Try Firefox instead. Hope this helps. Martial Law 03:49, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do a Google search to find Firefox . Martial Law 03:51, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Firefox may have a few problems, but they don't get you wrongfully blocked for someone else's misdeeds. Cheers. :)

Again, if you are on AOL, get off of it....NOW, to avoid anymore problems of this nature. Martial Law 03:55, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's not an AOL problem -- and if it is, using Firefox (or any other browser) really wouldn't help, since the browser doesn't designate the proxy address. --Nlu (talk) 04:29, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No, I'm not on aol. I'm at the mercy of the place i work at, and of course i'd love to install firefox, but the chance that i could install software is about as likely as ... well anyway it's impossible. But thanks for you support. I just want to be able to edit wikipedia more than just from the public library. But I keep getting blocked by vandals in my school. JamieJones talk 12:59, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Get a Home computer, and install firefox on that one. You could get one of those wireless laptop computers. The new ones allow you to access the internet via a modem that is similar to a cell phone in nature. Your local Office Depot or Wal*Mart may have them. Some of the laptop units even have wireless mice as well. Cheers. Martial Law 19:22, 18 January 2006 (UTC) :)[reply]

blocked ip

Sweet user page/talk page. Hi Essjay, i'm a new user JamieJones talk 00:17, 18 January 2006 (UTC). You blocked the ip i log in from at a high school where I work. Can you help me? I keep getting blocked from wikipedia from there. Is it not possible to block anon ip's from there, but not me if i'm logged in? And do you think you could keep a watch on my talk page in case i get blocked again, as i can't do anything till i get to another computer?[reply]

Thanks! JamieJones talk 00:17, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

(Crossposted to User talk:JamieJones)
JamieJones: I'd be happy to help, but I need a little information first. I am unable to see what IP you are using for privacy reasons, so you'll have to provide it for me. Since you're able to post here, I'm assuming it is probably an autoblock, rather than an actual IP block, because if it was a full block, you would only be able to edit your talk page. If you'll email me (essjaywiki at gmail dot com) with the IP (it should tell you in the block text) as well as the reason it gives for the block (it should say "the reason given is: .... ), I'll go unblock it. User boxes

Greetings. I'd just like to compliment you on your user boxes. The Rebel Alliance is cool, but the light side can't use Force lightning (correct me if I'm wrong). I don't know if it would be appropriate to sacrifice one's values in order to use such a power, but it would be sweet, as would having a large black swivel chair. I'll see you in the non-wikified real life. Eduard Gherkin 18:21, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: CSD

Just look at the code for the template I put on that page. I can't repeat it here or your talk page might get deleted by accident. lol CG janitor 00:39, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Minor edits and stuff

Hi Jamie. Please note that you should not use the minor edit button for edits which are not minor, like this, which created a new article, or this. I suggest you change your preferences so that edits are not automatically marked as minor, or otherwise, decide on a case-by-case basis if the minor edit box should be checked or not.

Also, it is good if you use an edit summary. It is one of the Wikipedia guidelines, and it is really helpful to other people who happen to see your edits on the watchlist or the recent changes. Thanks, and I hope you like it here. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 02:06, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Stubs

Hey, Jamie. To tell you the truth, I just guessed on the scifi stub's template (they're usually pretty self explanatory); but, there is a list of stubs on the page Category:Stub categories. All you do is place the template given at the top of each category from this list at the bottom of the article on which you want the stub. They are always in curly brackets. The image beside each stub automatically appears. Also, the page automatically appears under the stub category to which it belongs. (If you are just talking about a list of general images, the Wikimedia Commons has a whole slew of them.) When adding stubs to articles, know that there may be some that are possibly more specific. For instance, there could be a science fiction book stub that I just haven't looked for to add on to the Eubians page. Try it out! (For the template, simply look under "S" in the above category page.) By the way, nobody told me about the "Show preview" button at the bottom of the editing screens when I first started. It saves a lot of time and improper edits. Just thought I'd let you know. I'm glad you're enjoying Wikipedia! I have never heard of a better analogy than trench warfare. Good luck on your exams. Post from Nlu's page so i have this info

i know you've helped me in the past...got two vandals, one on the CPR page, one on the novel, i reverted ... should i do anything else? Should an admin follow up? Thanks JamieJones talk 19:20, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't look like it. If the vandalism is serious, you can consider asking an admin to protect the page by asking on WP:RPP. If a particular vandal returns and has been warned but won't stop, you can ask for block of that person by asking on WP:AIV. --Nlu (talk) 23:36, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

american red cross vs. red cross

I see you've made edits in the past regarding Red Cross content. You changed an edit of mine from American Red Cross to Red Cross on First aid kit. I had used American because it specifically referenced the American Red Cross website, not Red Cross in general. Should this be Red Cross or American Red Cross? -- Mjwilco 02:48, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:CatherineAsaro1.gif

The image you uploaded, Image:CatherineAsaro1.gif, has been tagged for deletion. Please see Non-commercial only and By Permission Only Images to be deleted for the rationale. If you can get a photo under fair use or under a free license, that would be great. Wikipedia:Image use policy is a good place to start. Good luck! --Christopherlin 20:55, 18 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I assume you are talking about the Catherina Asaro photo? Basically, "Permission obtained from author Catherine Asaro to post on Wikipedia only." means that per http://mail.wikipedia.org/pipermail/wikien-l/2005-May/023760.html , it's not okay. It's not a problem of permission from the author (Asaro herself?). This is great that you did get permission, Wikipedia just likes free licenses, not "Wikipedia only", not "non-commercial use only". I think it might qualify as fair use for a promotional photo. Let me know if you have any further questions. --Christopherlin 15:07, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the Kindness Campaign!

Just my way of saying thanks to newcomers to the Kindness Campaign... a delicious home-baked chocolate chip cookie! Yum. :D  ♥ Kylu  (talk • contribs • email • logs • count)
I replied to your question on my talkpage, just to let you know. A lot of critters on here like to swap between pages when they have a conversation, I've yet to figure out why. :D ~Kylu (u|t) 02:02, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm posting your reply here, so I have it as a reference. Thanks! JamieJones talk 02:08, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There's no "Barnstar coordinating committee" (yet) on Wikipedia, just give them out as you feel is appropriate. Don't overdo it though, as there are a lot of people who work tirelessly on here and never get any recognition at all. If you find them, make sure they know they're appreciated, please. :)
As far as award resources go, let's see what I can dig up: WP:UBX is the central page for userboxes if you'd like to use it, though there are users who dislike userboxes (some dislike barnstars too, for that matter)
WP:BARNSTAR has a bunch of premade awards, WP:PUA has a few nifty ones, WP:ORA for "Other awards", WP:ESP/I for Esperanza's award images (While I'm not a member, I'd heartily suggest them. Very nice bunch of people and I seem to be friends with a ton of them!)
If you just want good images, check out Commons:Category:Barnstars sometime. Endless, endless supply! Great stuff. :)
Oh, and one last thing... thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for deciding you'd like to give a smile or two to other Wikipedians. A lot of them work very hard and when it finally gets down to time to see what's done at the end of the day, they don't have anything to look at and go, "Hey, they really appreciate me!" We're human, it helps. :) ~Kylu (u|t) 01:59, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!
