The 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup is the 13th edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup competition and the 23rd CONCACAF regional championship overall in CONCACAF's fifty years of existence. It is currently being held in the United States, with two matches being played in Canada, marking the first time the CONCACAF Gold Cup is played in that country.[1]
The United States are the defending champions. The competition will include a third place match for the first time since 2003.[2]
Qualification for other tournaments
The champion of the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup will qualify for a one-off play-off match against the United States, the champion of the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup, to decide which team will represent CONCACAF in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. If the United States win the 2015 Gold Cup, they will qualify automatically to the Confederations Cup.[3]
In addition, the top four teams excluding those which have qualified before the tournament, namely the United States, Mexico, Costa Rica (winners of the 2014 Copa Centroamericana), and Jamaica (winners of the 2014 Caribbean Cup), will qualify for play-offs which will determine the final two places of the Copa América Centenario in 2016.[4] In the case where the champion of the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup is not one of the already qualified teams, they will qualify directly to the 2016 Copa América Centenario.[5]
Qualified teams
A total of 12 teams qualified for the tournament. Three berths were allocated to North America, four to Central America, and four to the Caribbean. For the first time, the two overall fifth-placed teams of the Caribbean zone and the Central America zone competed for the final berth of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Previously, five berths were allocated to Central America and four were allocated to the Caribbean.[6]

Gold Cup and Copa América
This article needs to be updated.(July 2015) |
Mexico and Jamaica sent representative teams at both the 2015 Gold Cup and the 2015 Copa América. In March 2010, then CONCACAF general secretary Chuck Blazer restricted Mexico and Jamaica to fielding an under-22 team at the Copa América. An agreement was made with the Mexican Football Federation that CONCACAF competitions would remain top priority to play with their senior team. In exchange, CONCACAF gave permission Mexico to have representatives in the CONMEBOL-organised Copa Libertadores.[7][8] However, CONCACAF has yet to decide which team Mexico and Jamaica can take to 2015 Copa America hoping to have the best representation possible in the tournament. CONCACAF President Jeffrey Webb said he is still considering the possibility that Mexico can compete in the Copa America 2015 with a team without age restriction.[9]
Venues
A total of 14 venues will be used for the tournament. CONCACAF announced the host cities and venues for the tournament on December 16, 2014.[1] Apart from the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia which will host the final and the PPL Park in Chester which will host the third place match (both located in the Philadelphia metropolitan area), the other 12 venues will host two matches. The assignment of matches for the knockout round and the awarding of the final were announced on March 12, 2015.[10]

Defection of Keiler García
Cuban attacker Keiler García defected to the United States in Chicago on July 8, the day before his team's opening game against Mexico at Soldier Field.[7] Due to problems obtaining US visas for players and staff, and the defection of García, Cuba only had 16 players available for the opening game against Mexico.[8]
