Sidney Royel Selby III (born March 25, 1997),[citation needed] better known as his stage name Desiigner, is an American rapper and songwriter from Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, New York City, New York.[1][2] Desiigner gained recognition for his hit single "Panda", which became popular in its own right, after it was sampled for Kanye West's song, titled "Pt. 2" on The Life of Pablo, in which Desiigner was featured on this track and on West's other track, "Freestyle 4". On February 11, 2016, West announced Desiigner's signing to the GOOD Music imprint, under the aegis of Def Jam Recordings.[3]
Early life
Sidney Royel Selby III was born on March 25, 1997, in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, New York City.
Career
Desiigner first started working on his tracks, under the moniker of Designer Royel, as Royel is his middle name. It was his sister, who convinced him to drop the middle name and add the extra I. He released some songs such as “Danny DeVito” and “On the Low”, with a fellow rapper Phresher through SoundCloud,[4] and then afterward, he released his official debut track, titled "Zombie Walk" on December 3, 2015.[5] In December 2015, his commercial debut single, titled "Panda", was released on YouTube and SoundCloud,[6] and on iTunes in February 2016.[7] On February 11, 2016, Desiigner signed a recording contract to GOOD Music, under Def Jam Recordings. After signing a deal to the label, Desiigner was featured on Kanye West's seventh album, The Life of Pablo, appearing on the tracks "Pt. 2" (which featured an interpolation of "Panda") and "Freestyle 4". Desiigner later performed another song, named "Pluto" at the 2016's South by Southwest (SXSW). In an interview with Billboard, Desiigner confirmed the release of his upcoming trap mixtape, named Trap History Month.[4]
Musical style
Desiigner's musical style is influenced by Southern trap.[4] His rapping voice has been compared to Future's. While talking about those comparisons, he told Complex: "God gave him a blessing, but he gave me a blessing too. I ain't gonna doubt the man's music. He make beautiful music too. Music is made every day. Big ups to him, big ups to Future. I actually like Future’s music. I like his music, you feel me. I’m not a hater or a critic on him, you know, I do me. God bless him, God bless me."[8]
