Slither.io is a 2016 browser game in which the player's avatar, a snake, consumes multicolored dots to grow in size and become the biggest avatar (snake) on the server. It is similar in concept to the popular 2015 web game, Agar.io. The game grew in popularity following its promotion among several prominent YouTube hosts and users.

Gameplay

The object of the game is to control and move a snake-like avatar around a space, eat dots, defeat and consume other players to grow the avatar and become the biggest avatar in the instance of the game. If the snake's head collides into a part of another player, the player loses the game and must start over. The defeated avatar's body turns into bright, shining dots for other players to consume.[1] There are also shining dots that spawn from other snake avatars and if followed, they will lead your avatar to a bigger snake. These dots may be consumed, though it requires a speed boost to do so. By holding the mouse down, the snake avatar is able to speed up, however, by speeding, the snake avatar loses ~10 mass per second. There is also a border that helps keep the snake avatars together. Should a snake hit the border, they will die but no glowing dots will be left behind. According to the app description in the Apple App Store, the player with the biggest snake at the end of the day gets to send a "victory message" to the world.[2]

Reception

The game reached the top of the App Store sales charts in the free software category in regions including the United States,[1] the United Kingdom,[3] and France.[citation needed] Slither.io grew in popularity via YouTube hosts such as Pewdiepie, Markiplier, DanTDM,and Jacksepticeye.[1] Patricia Hernandez of Kotaku said that the game's low barriers to entry and similarity to Agar.io explained Slither.io's popularity. She noted the game's fast pace.[1] Boing Boing compared the game's core mechanic to that of the 2009 game Osmos.[4]
