Software

The phone has the capacity to support the installation of a wide range of third-party software such as mp3 and multimedia players, games, web browsers, GPS navigation, office suites, GUI themes, etc. via Java and ePoc (*.sis) installers. There is also a plethora of custom GUI themes available for download off the internet (see exemplary link below), attesting to the phone's popularity, created using the Nokia Symbian Theme Studio available for free download from Nokia's website.

The model comes in two variants, a full black model and the 'penguin king' (black and white) model.

The Nokia 6620 is a slightly updated North American version of the 6600.

Bugs

First releases of the phone were extremely buggy and normal everyday use was impossible. It was due to poor firmware and early software. From the version v5.27 NHL-10 phone stability has been improved.

However, there is plethora of symbian applications that might cause system failure (especially Psi Software apps). Still, the user should try not to install many apps and be cautious with the memory usage in order to avoid "hangouts".

Phone service codes

Nokia has provided the ability of entering special codes to allow the user retrive system information and repairing the system. The codes are executed by "dialing" asterix - "*" followed by a special sequence of digits and confirmed with #.

Example codes are as follow:

  • *#0000# - phone firmware version
  • #06# - Phone Serial Number

(more codes needed)

To format the system after a serious crash, the user have to turn off the phone and hold "3" + "*" + "Call Button" (green one) simultaneously while tunring on the device. This will execute full format procedure, thus it will erase all the phone content, including all setting, contacts and mesagges.

Tips

It is good to erase all the redundant data from the phone's memory as to improve system responsiveness and stability. Although the phone is capable of storing vast amout of messages and photos, in the real life stuffing phone's memory may lead to total lost of system stability and eventualy total system failure.

Trivia

The Nokia 6600 is the phone used in the movie Cellular (2004), in which Chris Evans's character demonstrated full use of the smartphone.

The phone was and still is extremely popular in Asian countries for its diverse, well-rounded features ever since its release onto the market.
