Lauren Cherie Southern[2] (born June 15, 1995) is a Canadian conservative and libertarian activist, book author, political commentator and writer. He created content for The Rebel Media, a Canadian online media company, until March 2017. Southern ran as a candidate for the Libertarian Party of Canada in the 2015 Canadian federal election.

Education and life

Southern was born in Surrey, British Columbia and currently resides in Toronto.[3] She studied political science at the University of the Fraser Valley but dropped out after two years to focus on her political activism.[4][5]

Media and political career

Political career

In 2015, Southern was a candidate in the Canadian Federal Election representing the Libertarian Party of Canada in the electoral district of Langley—Aldergrove.[4] Party officials suspended her campaign after her protest of a SlutWalk went viral, with party leader Tim Moen stating Southern’s actions had "broken message discipline".[6] A public outcry and over ten Libertarian candidates resigning or threatening to resign followed and a week later she was reinstated as a candidate by her party.[7] The riding was eventually won by Conservative candidate Mark Warawa.

Media activism

In June 2015, Southern's Rebel Media cameraman was shoved at the SlutWalk in Vancouver and Southern's protest sign "There Is No Rape Culture In The West" was torn up while reporting on the event.[8]

In March 2016, a protester in Vancouver poured a container of urine over Southern's head while she was speaking with other protesters at a rally in Vancouver.[9] The incident resulted from statements Southern made about there being "only two genders".[10] Southern was banned from Facebook after she criticized Facebook policies in 2016 after a string of conservatives were banned from the site.[11][12]

Southern initiated "The Triggering", whereby every March 9, the day after International Women's Day, Twitter users post taboo content in defense of free speech. During one of "The Triggering" events Southern posted on Twitter saying "#AltRightMeans I don't have to be ashamed of my heritage".[13]

In October 2016, Southern had her gender legally changed to male as part of a video produced for Rebel Media to show the ease of the new gender ID laws.[14]

In March 2017, Southern announced she would be leaving Rebel Media to become an independent journalist.[15]

On April 15, 2017, she was one of several scheduled speakers at a Patriots' Day rally in Berkeley, California. The rally led to a riot between pro-Trump demonstrators and anti-Trump counter-protesters.[16]

Publications

Lauren Southern wrote Barbarians: How Baby Boomers, Immigrants, and Islam Screwed My Generation, which she self-published in 2016 through Amazon's CreateSpace.[17][18] In January 2017 it was the number one bestselling book on the Canadian Amazon store.[19]
