Find something better to do

Stop leaving garbage on my talk page. Asaturn (talk) 07:58, 7 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry Asaturn, I have not looked at the situation properly. Later I have undone my contributions as per WP:OWNTALK. Sorry. Cheers, FriyMan Per aspera ad astra 08:01, 7 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I still suggest, that you should archive threads, rather than delete them. Cheers, FriyMan Per aspera ad astra 08:05, 7 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Adoption

Hello there, I am a slightly inexperienced user looking for a mentor to help learn things about Wikipedia. I have been unblocked very recently with a special 1 Revert Rule which must be noted. I also have a topic ban as well. Could you please consider adopting me so that I can get better at using Wikipedia. I am particularly interested in counter-vandalism. Please get back to me as soon as possible. Thank you in advance. Pablothepenguin (talk) 20:52, 7 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Pablothepenguin, Do not worry, I can adopt you. If you are interested in Counter-Vandalsim, I can help you, too. Let's begin. I will make a dedicated subpage for you, where you can ask me any questions you want. Firstly, read a few pages, such as WP:5P, WP:CIV and WP:EW. Cheers, FriyMan Per aspera ad astra 06:52, 8 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have now read the pages and am ready to begin the process now. Pablothepenguin (talk) 20:21, 8 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
And what have you learned, dear Pablothepenguin? Cheers, FriyMan Per aspera ad astra 08:15, 9 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
As well as that, what timezone are you in? Cheers, FriyMan Per aspera ad astra 08:38, 9 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have a great deal there. I have learned many things about what Wikipedia is not and what Edit Warring involves. Also my time zone is UTC (Greenwich Mean Time). Pablothepenguin (talk) 12:27, 9 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A cheeseburger for you!

Keep on! SerialNumber54129...speculates 21:02, 7 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Keep on what, Serial Number 54129? Cheers, FriyMan Per aspera ad astra 07:25, 8 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well. Eating cheesburgers? -maybe. Annoying me? -maybe! But most of all, the good work you do here! Re. your Spitfire below, may I suggest peer review? People might look like they're ripping it to shreds, but they give you a laundry-list of things to do which make it almost certain (hopefully!) that you then sail through FAR because all the things that would usually be thrown at you have already been dealt with. This isn't any sort of criticism, just that that way you hae a central page that lots of people watch, rather than waiting for people to come here  :) Best of luck with it though, and I hope you don't think I'm being rude! Take care! SerialNumber54129...speculates 07:42, 8 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
A peer review has already happened, I believe I can manage fixing the references in the page. Thank you for care though. Cheers, FriyMan Per aspera ad astra 07:52, 8 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, @MilHist, always solid of course. But PR will get you a broader range of views, that's all- remember, FAR isn't project specific, so it's probably worth getting views from outside MH. Amyway. SerialNumber54129...speculates 07:59, 8 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Of course, of course. After the A-class review is done. Cheers, FriyMan Per aspera ad astra 08:41, 8 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Supermarine Spitfire

Hello:

I copy edited the article to the end of the Speed and altitude records section.

I have come across the following "issues" so far which I'm drawing to your attention.

Origins

"The Type 224 was a big disappointment to Mitchell and his design team" – needs elaboration

Airframe

I can see the confusion over the number of frames. The section begins stating there is a skeleton of 19 frames, but later says frame 20 was the last in the fuselage and then that the tail section included frames 21-23. I have added “vertical” for clarity. Could this issue be resolved by simply saying the skeleton had 23 frames?

Armament

I can’t figure out why there is a "but" in this sentence. "A variant on the Spitfire design with four 20 mm Oerlikon cannon had been tendered to specification F37/35, but the order for prototypes had gone to the Westland Whirlwind in January 1939.[5]"

By the way, I don't necessarily agree with, or understand some of the comments.

I will try to get back to the article as time allows. Have a look through what I've done so far and let me know if you see any issues.

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Nominations and voting will take place on the main project talkpage: here and here. Thank you for your time. Supermarine Spitfire - 2

Hello:

I've finished going through the article and found only one additional issue to draw to your attention.

Overview

The machine guns are converted so a .303 becomes a 7.7mm – surely they were never called 7.7mm guns? If not, the conversions are unnecessary.

Griffon-engined variants

Another cannon conversion.

I had some time so I added a few citations for you.

A few other thoughts:

  • I don't think the last paragraph in the Origins Section is too long. It's discussing the fixes made on one plane—these can be in a single paragraph.
  • "Although Morris Motors," ... "it was funded by government money." the use of "although" as in even though, or in spite of is fine.

Let me know if you have any concerns.

Regards

Twofingered Typist (talk) 20:42, 8 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks once again, Twofingered Typist! I will get working on references today. I have no more concerns. Thank you for your amazing work. Cheers, FriyMan Per aspera ad astra 08:14, 9 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. Twofingered Typist (talk) 13:33, 9 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello FriyMan, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 12713 pages. Please consider reviewing even just a few pages each day! If everyone helps out, it will really put a dent in the backlog.
  • Currently the backlog stretches back to March and some pages in the backlog have passed the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing some of them!

Outreach and Invitations:

  • If you know other editors with a good understanding of Wikipedia policy, invite them to join NPP by dropping the invitation template on their talk page with: {{subst:NPR invite}}. Adding more qualified reviewers will help with keeping the backlog manageable.

New Year New Page Review Drive

  • A backlog drive is planned for the start of the year, beginning on January 1st and running until the end of the month. Unique prizes will be given in tiers for both the total number of reviews made, as well as the longest 'streak' maintained.
  • Note: quality reviewing is extremely important, please do not sacrifice quality for quantity.

General project update:

  • ACTRIAL has resulted in a significant increase in the quality of new submissions, with noticeably fewer CSD, PROD, and BLPPROD candidates in the new page feed. However, the majority of the backlog still dates back to before ACTRIAL started, so consider reviewing articles from the middle or back of the backlog.
  • The NPP Browser can help you quickly find articles with topics that you prefer to review from within the backlog.
  • To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go to Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

If you wish to opt-out of future mailings, go here. TonyBallioni (talk) 20:27, 12 December 2017 (UTC) [reply]

Adoption

Hello, FriyMan. Are you still accepting adoptees? If you are, would you be willing to adopt me? I've been editing Wikipedia for a few months now, but I still don't have a very good understanding of how to do it. I think I would benefit from some mentorship. Thanks.
