Farringdon, Sunderland

Farringdon is a suburb of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear.

Farringdon is council-built housing estate, erected in the 1960's. It is approximately 3 miles south of the city centre along the A690, close to Silksworth, Herrington and Doxford Park. It also borders onto the Durham road which leads to the other suburb of Thorney close, and is now the most important state on the west division of the city.

Since it was built, the majority of residents have bought their homes. Approximately 5,000 people now live on the estate.

Farringdon contains a large secondary school (Farringdon Community Sports College), and a primary school ([[Farringdon Junior School]).the police have a station in farringdon that covers the west division of the city and recently there was also a fire station built. There is also a large social club, two churches, one pub, and three shopping arcades. also in Farringdon is the Jubilee centre, which is a community centre offering activities and learning opportunities for people in the area. Also at the north of the estate there is a large public libary which offers reading oppurtunities for children, and occasionally holds activities for schools in the area.

At the bottom of Farringdon lies a small economic district where the fire station and police station are located which is also the location of a small call centre a small shopping facility, and a fast food chain Restraunt.

All street names in Farringdon begin with the letter A. The main street running through the centre of the estate is Allendale Road.

Farringdon in the 1950's was Farmland, owned Cuthbert Pepper, a rich land owner, who lived in Farringdon hall next to east herrington. Shortly after the Sunderland city council purhcased the land and created an estate, with three schools. A comprehensive school, a Junior school and an infants school, in 2002 the two schools were combined into a primary school.
